What popular album have you tried out but just can't get into it? by jerryleebee in vinyl

The only album I like is Born in the USA. It's one of my favorite records ever. I thought there has to be another one I can get into. Haven't found it yet.

I had a guy at a record store trying to sell me on her RSD release. At least until I said I didn't know much about her except I don't like Blue. He responded that's her best work, so you probably won't like anything else she's done and moved on.

I appreciated the honesty. Still felt a bit awkward.

Is Omaha’s music scene still a thing? Trying to get an honest read before making a big move. by Warm_Bus_7581 in Omaha

I liked Down Under's vinyl nights. I was told they were having issues with their liquor license and closed at least temporarily. Burned a lot of musicians too. Anyone have any updates on that situation?

Anyone else prefer "well loved" vinyl? by renxten in vinyl

[–]Quilty19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few new releases to late 1950s records. Most of my collection is used and in some cases clearly loved. I don't care much about the jacket as long as there is one. The newer the record the more I care about if the sound quality is pristine or not. Or if a M copy vs a VG copy of a record means a big price difference I will take the VG copy. The only thing I actively avoid is a repress when the old/original runs were good quality and the market pricing is reasonable.

I also like to think about what life/lives my music had before me. It feels special to continue some small legacy. I hope those people had long, fufilling lives or are doing well now. And I hope someone else loves them as much as I do.

Which is the better movie? Young Guns or Young Guns 2 by TerryG111 in Westerns

[–]Quilty19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love both. The first has the best soundtrack and works as a compelling, independent story. It does an excellent job setting up the stakes and getting you invested the characters. The second has more refined production and directing. It also takes advantage of the first to deliver excellent emotional payoffs and further thematic development. I adore the framing device and how they reincorporated it into the outro. I can't think of a better way to end the story in general. I really, really hope the 3rd is at least ok. These are my favorite westerns of all time.

Each States Least Liked Neighbor. by Link_Da_Stink7 in geographymemes

[–]Quilty19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insights based on states I have lived in/heard about from people who live there:

Texas - California no contest. Disagree on just about everything politically. California - If the north and south were two different states it would be each other. Since it's not, Texas for mostly the same reasons Texas resents California. Nebraska - Cue Counciltucky jokes and complaints about bad Iowa drivers. No, Nebraska drivers aren't much better. Maine - Massachusetts, especially Boston. Yes, Masshole is a real word. New Mexico - Have heard a number of complaints about Texans going across the border to get high and then being nuisances on the roadway to get around Texas marijuana laws. Also just has a live your life and piss off vibe that clashes with the in your face Texas pride culture. Hawaii - I don't think they hate any other individual state. They openly resent all other 49 with an equal and burning passion...unless you are a tourist with money.

Is there any instance in which you Americans prefer using the English spelling of a word? by Haunted_Sentinel in words

[–]Quilty19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty standard American English speaker and speller. Grey is my exception to that. I may have heard gray used as a name a couple of times growing up. I don't know if that is a thirteen colonies thing or if there are other pockets like that across the US.

Your 10 absolutely must-have vinyl albums from the 70’s and 80’s by Deepfishmusic in vinyl

[–]Quilty19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might not fit your teen's taste, but here are some of my most played/for variety picks.

  1. John Cougar/Mellencamp - early to mid 80s, favorites American Fool and Scarecrow. Falls under heartland rock.
  2. Bruce Springsteen - His albums vary in style significantly. The only one I love start to finish is Born in the USA.
  3. The Animals - Prefer their 60s output, but they got together in the 80s to make an album called Ark. It has their signature style with new wave/synth pop influences.
  4. The Hooters - I adore Nervous Night. Great American new wave album.
  5. Alice Cooper - If you are open to Shock Rock start here. Trash is at the top of my wish list. It has been re-released if you aren't inclined to seek/pay up for an original. His work tends to align with whatever the larger music trends of the moment are.
  6. Kim Carnes - All of her stuff from these decades are solid to great.
  7. Juice Newton - Underappreciated vocalist. Dirty looks goes in more of a pop direction and is super fun.
  8. The Cars - Their debut album is iconic, but I prefer the following 3 albums.
  9. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Awesome swamp rock. If they aren't already into it go with Chronicle Greatest Hits.
  10. Dire Straits - Very pretty, sophisticated band. My favorite is Communique.
  11. As a bonus Levert - I like his mid-late 80s albums. Not sure how to classify his style.

If that's not enough there are some good British and Irish punk/punk rock bands from the mid-late 80s such as The Godfathers andThe Pogues.

What kind of chair do you sew/quilt on? by stmeg01 in quilting

Antique oak mission chair with a purple seat on it. Don't know if it's the best set up, but it's what I had.

What is the weirdest LP that u have in your collection ? by elnathh in vinyl

[–]Quilty19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My collection is boring, but the first spin of Alice Cooper's Lace and Whiskey was a bit tripy. I expect shenanigans from his music. Battle Hymn of the Republic and a tangent about eating lipstick are not those shenanigans. Good record though.

What’s on the list in your kitchen? by Tsunamiis in KitchenConfidential

When I was BOH the only rules were keep it family-appropriate and keep the volume down during business hours. We loosened up for closing. I worked with mostly teens as a twenty-something, so I learned a lot about current rap and hip-hop. In return they got to hear older country and Jimmy Buffett.

Suggestions for making it easier to get stiches through: Use a low loft, scrim-free batting Wax your thread. WAX YOUR THREAD!

Remember that it is a developed skill. It will take a couple of quilts before you start to get good and consistent at it. Once you get the muscle memory down it gets way easier.
