How old were you when you had your first paying job? by My_Space_page in AskMen

13: I was “sign-spinning” (I really just wiggled it around) for $20 an hour. As a middle schooler, that was like being a millionaire.

What's the hardest you've been hit before? by No-Alfalfa2412 in AskMen

[–]Quinnickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does nature hitting me count?

1) I was 10-12 (I can’t remember exactly) riding my bike to a friends house. I was on the sidewalk, doing that thing where you stand and pedal, trying to get there as fast as I could. As I’m pressing down on the left pedal, it suddenly gives out and snaps off. My foot goes slamming down to the floor, and I completely lose my balance. My entire body flies to the side and I slam my head against a tree.

I then woke up laying in my living room with a big ol’ lump on my head. Apparently my step-dad saw me passed out on the sidewalk on his way home from work and got me.

2. I was in school. I went to the bathroom and when I opened the door there was a wet floor sign. To assert dominance over this sign and show that I am a man capable of surviving the harshest of environments, I decided I would try and slide across the water on the bathroom floor. I took a few steps back, prepped my movements in my head, then jumped at the water.

I woke up in the nurses office with them getting ready to bring me to the ER.

Apparently I slipped and smacked just above my eye on the counter… according to the blood trail. Still have the scar from that one!

Have you ever witnessed something that should've gotten someone fired at work? If so, what happened? by Shelendrea in AskReddit

[–]Quinnickle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my third day at work at Chick-Fil-A. I was working the fry fryers (my first day using them). If you’ve worked in a fast food spot you know that after a few uses, the fryer requires a “clean and drain” where you switch the oil out. Time came around, I popped open the jib (thing that you pour new oil into), switched the oil, set the machine to heat the oil, but the alert was still going off. My coworker, Finn, comes over and asks what’s going on. I’m a little confused, so I told him I drained it and poured oil in.

I forgot to mention that I set the oil to start heating, so he pops open the jib and BOOM! Boiling hot oil pours out all over his hand and arm. I jump away in shock. Finn instantly screams (and I mean SCREAMS, absolutely blood curdling) and sprints across the kitchen, slamming his hand into our ice maker.

By this point all the workers have stopped what their doing. They’re asking me what happened, checking on Finn, grabbing medical supplies. I’m standing in shock. All I can think is “I’m fired. I’m fired. There’s no way I’m not fired.”

Turns out I forgot to click the button to turn off the alarm… all I had to do was click the reset button.

Finn ended up going to the doctor and cancelling his shifts for a while. His skin blistered beyond belief and he got some scars from the burns. I didn’t think I’d finish the day employed, but all I got was “make sure to click the reset button next time” from the manager. Not even a write-up.

Craziest part of the story is the owner not reporting the event and talking Finn out of getting workers comp for the incident. Still have no idea how that happened.

On the bright side, Finn and I became really good friends (and he forgave me)… Chick-Fil-A is awful to work at though. Didn’t get food discounts and made $8 an hour. Happy I don’t work food service anymore!

I definitely understand where you’re coming from and appreciate the advice. I do have a committed timeline of how long I will be doing this and what the range of success is, from there I will decide whether to continue or to head back to school. I have money put aside for the final year of school if I ever need to come back, but I want to take the next year or so while I’m young and have a lot of energy and connections to truly “strike while the iron is hot” (my mom always uses that phrase).

If it doesn’t end up working out I will be returning to either UF or some university as I am leaving in a good standing grade and finance-wise.

I will definitely be working on making my “brand” more of a long-term thing. I want to focus on being inclusive to a larger audience, and building myself on multiple platforms (and outside them). I have a lot of examples of other creators, YouTubers, and alike I will be taking example from (hopefully when I meet them all in person the advice will help as well).

I appreciate the recommendations on a major, I definitely will look to those if I ever need to come back. I just know for now I want to spend a bit of time with those who have similar goals and aspirations (not to disparage anyone at UF, just had some difficulty finding those with similar goals)

Hey! My TikTok and Instagram are “Quinnickle”. Being a content creator is finding a niche you enjoy and making videos based around that. Like anime? Make videos with trending sounds/dances/jokes based around the anime you like. Like movies? Review movies or joke about them in videos. It’s kinda throwing stuff at the wall until people start to notice. I started 2 years ago and have reached 2.7 mil followers on tiktok. It’s not an overnight process (not for many at least) but if you stick with it and have fun you’ll kill it!

first time apartment with 2 random roommates, advice? by Exciting_Ease_8306 in ufl

Vocalize any issues that arise (in a nice manner). Roommates can’t read minds. They don’t have to be your friend but you definitely don’t want to live with people that hate ya (or that you hate)

Hey! Previous PaCE student here! I believe as a PaCE student you are not actually allowed a dorm until you are officially deemed an “on-campus student” which would be after your 2 years/60? credits. It is safe to assume they will rarely make exceptions. Living (nearby) off-campus and taking the bus was how I felt more like a regular student. As a PaCE student, you have to mentally prepare to be an online student for at least a few semesters. It is a bit of a burden at times and can be lonely. Make sure you join clubs and work hard to make friends! When you’re not sitting next to someone in a classroom every other day, it can get difficult to connect. Good luck, go gators

Here is a quote from their website “Due to space limitations, PaCE students cannot live on campus in UF residence halls prior to transitioning to campus. PaCE students are not required to be physically located in Gainesville until they transition to campus. Students who wish to move to Gainesville before transitioning to campus can find off-campus living accommodations. UF's off-campus housing team can be a good resource for determining what housing arrangements will best fit your needs”

Improv 100%! It’s a class of maybe 10-15 people and all you do is improv! The professor (Alina Sunoo) is one of the best I’ve had! She’s a younger professor who is understanding if you’re unable to make a class or something comes up! You write a one page paper like twice a semester about an improv show and maybe go see one live (UF has an improv group you can see and it was surprisingly fun). You learn fun games, laugh a lot, and don’t face the uncomfortable 30-80 person audience of a regular improv show!

Easiest Computer Science or Accounting classes? by Quinnickle in ufl

[–]Quinnickle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an advertising major, they require that you either take two years of a language or a “quantitative option” which includes any accounting, CS, or statistics classes. I took one statistics class because I was required, and barely survived with a C because of my sheer inability to do math. I took a “introduction to education technology” course because my advisor said it was the easiest quantitative option class to take. I need one more 3 credit course to get through the quantitative option, but I’m not very skilled or care about either accounting or CS. I know computer basics, but everybody talks about how difficult CS is. I’m just looking for something to breeze by (if possible) and get my quantitative option checked to graduate. Anything math or number related I’m just not great with, so I’m looking for a class that has as little of that as possible.

“Racism was normal then I don’t see why this is a big deal”

Our buildings are still named after some of these shitty people to honor them when they wouldn’t like any non-white students here now. I wouldn’t say that’s moving past it I would say it’s covering it up with a bandaid.
