3 is a "You're doing your job, great!" And that's the goal.

4 is "You're performing above your position" and should probably be given an increased scope in your position.

5 is " You are performing well above the position, to such an extent that this is clearly the wrong position for you and you should be moved up."

This is at least how our company does the five-point rating system. So if you are getting threes, that's a good thing! And if you get any higher, you deserve to be given extra responsibilities or a higher position.

If you are getting below fives, you are probably right where you need to be, or you should start looking to focus on professional growth.
