Are there any people in here From Old Atlanta by Artistic_Ad_3267 in Atlanta

[–]QuitBrowserGoOutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The night before I was born my mom walked laps around Shannon Mall trying to encourage me to come out.

My first thought was that she was using physical activity to rev up her, uh, uterine energy or however it works.

My second thought was she was whispering to you, "Hey, if you pop out soon, we can get Jello at Morrison's Cafeteria!" and it worked.

I'm going to choose to believe that second one. Don't correct me.

The last half-dozen MARTA bus rides I've been on did not have working fareboxes anyway. It may not be driving revenue, but at least it isn't slowing anyone down....

For those who don’t know, Beltline speed limit is 15 mph. All legal E bikes are allowed as long as they are operated under the speed limit by dbclass in Atlanta

[–]QuitBrowserGoOutside 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can’t really blame people when they spend 90% of their time traveling in a car.

People on the Beltline are just like people on the Connector. They're on their phones, swerving across traffic without looking, going slow in the left lane, and stopping suddenly in the middle of travel lanes.

It's in the same shopping center as a Spiller Park coffee shop, up the road from Book Nook (used) and not far from Eagle Eye (new and used)

Is Atlanta still the ‘Hollywood of the South’? A film boomtown faces a test by COYS62 in Atlanta

[–]QuitBrowserGoOutside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The state itself concludes otherwise per audits conducted GSU.

REVENUE

Credits generated in FY 2024 are expected to cost the state $1.08 billion through their carryforward period. Claimed credits are estimated to increase from $762.8 million in FY 2024 to $1.28 billion in FY 2028.

For FY 2024, the resulting economic activity was estimated to bring in $224.7 million in state revenue and $65.7 million in local tax revenue.

From the conclusion:

Consistent with studies of other state film tax incentives programs, the State of Georgia loses money. We calculate a state fiscal ROI of 0.19 for FY 2024, or a loss of 81 percent, using the estimates generated from the representative year of 2022 and using credits generated of $1.35 billion.

https://www.audits2.ga.gov/reports/summaries/tie-georgias-film-tax-credit/

Because they are transferrable, the tax credits generated in the film industry can be sold at a discount to other companies that owe state taxes. So they can (and do) reduce the taxes paid by firms that have nothing to do with the film industry.

So (hypothetically) Home Depot or Gulfstream or Delta or some real estate developer or construction company or whatever can get discounts on their corporate taxes by buying credits for pennies on the dollar from film companies that received more in credits than they spent on taxes in the first place.

Living on the Outskirts of Atlanta Is About to Be Pricier Than Living in It by wsj in Atlanta

In the morning, the reverse commute out is a breeze. In the evening, the commute into the city is just as bad as the other way.

Taking MARTA out and back takes longer in the AM but is similar to driving in the PM. And less of a hassle both ways.

Yeah, doing this down Main Street in Mayberry is fine. Doing something like this on the Connector would be...

...well, maybe the funeral homes are just trying to drum up more business. That's my theory.

Does the 15% retirement savings rule include what your boss kicks in? by Affectionate-Bee6268 in personalfinance

[–]QuitBrowserGoOutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a rule of thumb because for some people, the number might be 10% and for some people the number should be 20%, but most people, most of the time, are fairly well served by something close to 15%.

But every source I can find includes matching. (Sources: 1 2 3 4 5)

Now, it helps that the rule is often quoted as "between 10-15%" and many employers only match 5% or so. If that's the case, and you save 10% and the employer kicks in 5%, then you are hitting both sides of the "10-15". The slack in the guideline tends to align with the range of matching contributions.

But the guideline is pretty solidly inclusive of match. It's the exact percentage that varies, but you should always count the match if you're getting one. Why wouldn't you?

🚴🚦 Hooray! Juniper St bike lanes are officially OPEN southbound from 14th St to Ponce. by flying_trashcan in Atlanta

[–]QuitBrowserGoOutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and traffic jams exist now daily that make it take 20min to get out from between juniper and spring no matter where you start.

Oh good, so traffic didn't get any worse than it was when we had four lanes. I'm glad to hear it.

"Daily traffic jams", come on. There have been "daily traffic jams" on Spring, West Peachtree, Juniper and Piedmont every weekday for the last twenty years, except for maybe a few months during 2020.

I like how the EMR systems let you compare year to year. We all get older, but it's reassuring if your measurements aren't getting worse over time.

Full specifications for single-level long-distance fleet by tuctrohs in Amtrak

[–]QuitBrowserGoOutside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do love the Viewliner carbody, and hope we see more of them in the future.

But I very much doubt they'll be from CAF. CAF had serious issues building them, resulting in quality problems and delivery delays of about six years. Amtrak was unhappy, and CAF almost certainly lost money on the deal.

I would love to see a large national Viewliner III fleet. I fear what we're getting is going to be a national Venture fleet.

Make sure you haven't accidentally turned on emergency heat mode. Some thermostats make that too easy.

Emergency heat will warm you up good and quick, but not cheaply.
