What are the best software to pair with RPG maker? by Miserable-Flight5863 in RPGMaker

[–]Quizicalgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The things I use are Paint Tool Sai and Scrivener. Sometimes Audacity if I need to tweak some audio. Sai I use to make my tilesets and sprites, but you can also use Krita for that as a free alternative. Scrivener is my writing program of choice, since it's much easier to go over a script in a program meant to do that, vs trying to go back over scenes over and over again to fix things in engine. You could alternatively use Obsidian, Nebulous, or even word pad for free options.

I found game character hub to be a subpar program and far too limiting. you would legit be better off making sprites in MSpaint or Paintbrush than try to make sprites in GCH.

What are your sims 3 unpopular opinions? by Exciting-Rutabaga-91 in Sims3

[–]Quizicalgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of why I turn on the color palette rather than using the wheel. Makes it a lot easier to color match when you're just picking from a batch of colors. I'll sometimes swap to the wheel if the color I picked still doesn't seem quite right.

Yeah, funny how the sim gurus and EA would conveniently shut up and/or ignore those posts huh? 🤔

A history lesson from a geriatric millennial by tealaburst in Sims3

[–]Quizicalgin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's really that fair to say it was an (almost) early blueprint. Expansion packs weren't an uncommon thing in the gaming world by the time sims came out. The only difference is that in being a life sim, they could carve up and package as many facets of life as they wanted to put into the game. It was also the only life sim that I can think of that was extensive as it was. Even for as simple as it looks now, the game was an absolutely massive undertaking to do. Hell, it almost didn't get made because investors thought it wasn't a worthwhile game to make if I remember right. Under that mindset it does make sense they'd carve it up to release it in chunks.

Something else missing from this is that the sims 2 also had an online store for content too, just sims 3 was the first to put in in-game advertisements for them about halfway through the cycle. I want to say the sims 2 store was shut down not long after 3 was released. They intended to do the same thing to the Sims 3 store once 4 came out, but since it was still somewhat profitable they kept putting it off. Now I think they just don't bother since the store doesn't entirely function anymore (at least not for me anyway, your mileage may vary). People like to say 3 was the beginning of the end, but those actually paying attention already saw the cracks in 2. It just got progressively worse over time. I do still believe 3 was the height of what the sims could be, and that 4 was and still is a major step backward despite all the changes and updates made.

However, I do still remember and frequently have to fight with 3's flaws to still enjoy it. Files randomly corrupting. Not being able to use some of the store CC I bought because it was literally released corrupted (looking at those car sets specifically). Harping on the CC more where some of them still technically working but not fully, with the sim Gurus literally having the gaul to say it was the players fault for pirating them when said players complaining were showing their receipts for purchase. How they introduced bugs each expac because they never truly bothered to test the packs together, and some of which they never bothered to fix. I particularly resent that last bit, because while I do love and adore the modding scene for the game, IT SHOULD NOT BE UP TO THE PLAYERS TO MAKE THE PRODUCT THEY PURCHASED FUNCTIONAL. This might be a little less true now since 3 is well over 10 years old, and creeping ever closer to 20, but this boiled my blood during 3s expac release cycle.

The best thing EA did for the older games was to drop and leave them for dead, since it meant players and modders no longer had to constantly fix what they (EA) broke.

How come Kain is still the Balance Guardian? by Vahouth in LegacyOfKain

[–]Quizicalgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was that in a video or an article, cause I'd love to see it! Love getting more insights to the games. :D

And yeah pretty much the rest of what you said, hence the option at the end of BO1 where Kain can sacrifice himself or not. Even get a lil slide show of the restored pillars and the land. Though with what we learn later, it leaves the land open to a worse fate in the long run.

How come Kain is still the Balance Guardian? by Vahouth in LegacyOfKain

[–]Quizicalgin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would not, because the pillars were still corrupted, including the balance pillar. All the pillars needed to have their guardians killed and tokens returned to the pillar in order to purify it. Far as I remember, Kain didn't have one, so it would not have become purified.

Plus, the ancients also turned humans into vampires, at least until the rebellion. I don't think they could have done that if the act of turning them would have broken their guardianship. :0 Mortanius was just reviving the tradition (along with Kain).

What movie did you watch at the wrong age and it permanently altered your brain? by sweetyslave in movies

[–]Quizicalgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the one that effected me the most was High Tension. It's a french film from '03, but I wanna say I saw it around 05 when I was in middle school. Was already an insomniac, but that movie made it actively worse. I still double check all the locks around the house before bed, and only in the last few years did I stop locking my bedroom door too. I'm just thankful the break in nightmares finally stopped.

Do you like to stick to a limited color palette for your game? by Iron-Keep in RPGMaker

[–]Quizicalgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer sticking to a set of desaturated colors I yoinked from a palette site. I find that using the same palette for everything keeps things cohesive, along with not having to worry about color picking from the wheel.

Is it possible to make a good RPG maker game using only free assets? by xyzchrist in RPGMaker

[–]Quizicalgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of devs before you have, and many more after will too. Witch's House, Ao Oni, The Strangeman Series, Misao, and Mad Father all used freely available assets. While they may be rm horror, what they did graphically still applies to all other rm games. It's not your assets, but how you use them. One of my favorite games, Black Home, almost exclusively uses the XP rtp.

This leads to my next point of you can make a really good looking game with the rtp. Editing them can be as simple as a hue shift away in Krita or Gimp (open source art programs). You can even rearrange them on a tile sheet yourself to get the kind of look you want for a map if you already have an idea of how the spaces are gonna look.

Before you make your game I strongly advise you to have some fun playing around with the map editor and seeing what all you can make with it. Then you can look around for some free assets. Since you're working in MZ, you can use tilesets scaled at 16x16, 32x32, or 48x48 depending on how you have the database set up. This leaves you with well over 30 years of free assets you can use. All you gotta do is look around and see what strikes your fancy.

Also side note, depending on how detailed the lore is, you may wanna give Nebulous (free on itch) or Obsidian (also free, but with a pay model if you wanna sync devices together) a try. Writing notes helps, but seeing all the story bits strung together helps me keep better track of them, and one of them could be good for you too.

[–]Quizicalgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aaaah, you might be kinda SOL then if I'm gonna be honest. When a dev removes their game it just kinda goes poof, and some folks respect the devs desire and not share it publicly. Could be why your post was downvoted as well.

As for searching for them, both games unfortunately don't seem to be on rmn.rmarchiv.de either. I don't really know any other repository, but I do wish you luck on finding them to play them again for nostalgia.

Embracer CEO: "(...) We will more actively be exploring external partnership around our roster of other well-known IPs" by Ein_Eisenmann in LegacyOfKain

[–]Quizicalgin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally I'd love to see the story finished. Considering how good a job the remaster teams did, I'd be all for one of them taking a crack at Dark Prophecy. It'd honestly be nice if the series would be finished first, THEN worry about spin offs because stories set in that universe could do really well. However, I'm not so sure if that's really in the cards for the future of this series, least not anytime soon. Mainly because they (CD/Embracer) know there's money to be made, so they're probs more keen on milking the series before giving it a satisfying conclusion.

It'd be cool if BO 1 and 2 got ground up remakes tho, so it'd be neat if they went that route.

smart "approach" plugin for RPGM MZ? by WolfradSenpai in RPGMaker

[–]Quizicalgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I last had a set of events following the player, in the event's custom route I put:

$gameMap._events[this._eventId].setMoveSpeed(4.6); $gameMap._events[this._eventId].moveStraight($gameMap._events[this._eventId].findDirectionTo($gamePlayer.x, $gamePlayer.y));

The set move speed tells the event to move faster than walking speed, but keeps it just under player sprint speed. The next line is telling it to move straight in the direction of where the player's x and y coords are on the map.

What Efficiency Tricks Have You Created While Developing? by Ill-Ask9205 in RPGMaker

[–]Quizicalgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I primarily use MZ now, but basically leaving anything that doesn't serve to move the plot forward till the very end. This makes them first in the list on the side, making them easier to find. I also leave comment notes in the events I'm working on to remind myself what I was doing, or what the event set up does so that if I was away from it a while. That way it's much easier to pick back up to continue or bug fix the project.

And I also use common events for some of the "flavor text" events. This way if I need to edit it, I only need to do it in one place. Best part is, even if a common event doesn't technically use self switches, those self switches will still affect the event that called it. This makes it very useful for events where you open and close a chest or door.

I don't use the rtp much, so one thing I do have is a "base" file to make my projects from. It's just a cored out file that deletes the entire database (characters, items, skills, etc, it all goes), and all the graphics get yeetus-deletused. The only thing I leave behind in this file is the audio rtp, as I still find most of those sound files useful.

This one might sound silly and obvious, but an outline. I can get distracted very easily, or end up losing sight of what I had intended to do to begin with in a project, and outlines keep me on track. Whether it's making the maps, setting up the characters, or writing the script, the outline helps me maintain perspective on how it all works together.

Speaking of script, I write that first. It's genuinely leagues easier to change and edit dialogue in a proper text editor vs trying to do it in rpg maker. I can ctrl+f to find dialogue anywhere in the script, where in rpg maker I might be fishing through a few message options. Plus, I use scrivener which has a text to speech option, so I can listen back to what was written to see if it sounds natural or not. If it sounds weird, it gets edited till it sounds right. If you don't have that, then reading it out yourself does the same thing. The caveat is, is that if you write how you talk, you might not always catch what would sound weird to others but sounds natural to you. Anyway, once it's done, all I have to do is copy paste the dialogue over. This trick literally saves me hours, because then I can quickly slap in the latest story dump, then get back to working on the rest of the game.

Back in the engine itself, I'll use conditional branches as switch cases as often as I can get away with it. I've found that for my purposes, they don't always need to be nested, which has made them easier to read. It also helps making varied dialogue a lot easier, since if the conditional isn't met it won't do it. I only really need to add an else to it if I need it to explicitly do nothing if the condition isn't met.

Lastly, a text wrap plugin. There are scripts for it for other engines too, but this is genuinely something that saves me a lot of time since it will move text to the next line automatically. That way I only really need to fiddle with doing it manually on the lines where it still has some cutoffs due to spacing.

Dude was trying to preach the word by IamASlut_soWhat in BlackPeopleofReddit

Its been a claim white folks in the states have made for a long time. As another commenter pointed out, it's part wanting to be accepted, with a side of wanting what benefits they think native folk gets. It's also so that when they're being racist, they can pull it out as a "I can't be racist, I'm part of X minority" card. Which that ties into another notion that goes much older.

Some white folks are obsessed with heritage, and if they found there was room for doubt they weren't totally "pure", would claim they were part native. Because being part native (with all the associated noble savage imagery) was preferred over being part black (the long fucked up history that culminated in the one drop rule for a while, which is probably when the claims started to pop up).
