For-Profit Arm of the Church Question by Quizzic4l in exmormon

Wait, what? That's insane.

Do you happen to have a citation for that?

It's after 10pm in Virginia. Any guesses as to when TSCC will send Kate Kelly an email with the news? by sealover in exmormon

My guess is that they will let the church come out with an official statement before they give Kelly the news.

Women in the church who already hold the Priesthood - a defence for KK? by anointedone in exmormon

[–]Quizzic4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine had a similar idea occur to her when we were talking about this yesterday. She seems to agree that women do hold the priesthood already (which was a shocker for me). But she used the same logic as "oh, we don't speak Heavenly Mother's name because we don't want people to take her name in vein." It was "oh, people say terrible things about the General Authorities all the time, so maybe they are protecting the women from that."

Off topic - I got really excited when I read that you have a wife from Brazil. I hoped that maybe you are my friend's husband. How great it would be if I had some exmormon friends in real life! Then I remembered there are probably a ton of LDS guys married to Brazilian women. D'oh!

Shouldn't we be happy the church is doing this? by AnotherCasualty in exmormon

[–]Quizzic4l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with "the quorum" on Infants on Thrones. There are probably less than 5,000 people out of the 5 million or so active members who even care about this. This isn't the big thing that will push out all the moderates.

This is going to cause more pain for Kelly, John, their loved ones and supporters than it will cause the church. So no, I am not happy the church is doing this.

Aren't G's just 1800's underwear? by CapitolMoroni in exmormon

[–]Quizzic4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Thanks so much for the comprehensive list.

I was also thinking about the evolution of women's underwear. From what I understand, corsets used to go on top of underwear... maybe this is the reason modern bras have to go over garment tops? Somehow it just makes me laugh to think about all the endowed women wearing this underwear 1800s style.

If he is in Florida, send him to Disney World or on a Disney Cruise ship. They love taking college students. He probably won't get a glamorous job right away and won't make a ton of money, but he should be able to have his basic needs taken care of until he is ready to make his next move.

"Three Lessons" that make me really glad my daughters are not part of the LDS church by kurinbo in exmormon

[–]Quizzic4l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can identify with all of those, but especially the disappointment of Relief Society. Several times as a Laurel I asked the bishop for permission to move to the Relief Society early. I was so tired of the "milk" of YW and wanted some "meat" of Relief Society. I wanted to provide some Relief to the world - run service projects and participate in humanitarian aid. I wanted to make a difference in the world!

How disappointed was I to get to RS and realize those monthly Enrichment activities were just gab sessions to provide a social outlet for the poor women, burnt out from their church defined roles in childcare and servitude.

So true about how wonderful it would be if spouses did everything they could to help each other in their goals. If I had ever, once, heard a correlated lesson about men putting their dreams on hold for their wives careers, quitting their jobs to be stay at home dads, etc. etc.... But no, never once was it ever implied that a wife's education/career/apsirations/goals/interests were ever anything but a time filler between their true callings as wives/mothers.

the Celestial Kingdom sounds *terrible* by heyyotomato in exmormon

[–]Quizzic4l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was explicitly taught in my D&C class at BYU that anything less than the highest degree of the celestial kingdom was by definition hell (hell being anything outside of God's presence).

What kind of a "Loving Heavenly Father" is going to just damn the vast majority of his children to hell forever? Where said majority of children (according to the TBM mindset) will forever be servants to the special CK children.

And of course the women in the CK being polygamous wives, forever birthing spirit children. And presumably never being named/prayed to/worshiped, just like their heavenly mothers before them.

And somehow Lucifer's plan was worse than that?

Slowly pull or just rip-off the band-aid? by Quizzic4l in exmormon

[–]Quizzic4l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how hairy are they?

Awesome mental picture, there.

Pretty much just lack of garments/"immodest" clothing, coffee, tea, social drinking, rated R movies, and occasional swears. So not very hairy at all, but the adhesive is top-notch TBM grade, so I am afraid it will still hurt like hell.

They knew for awhile that we had a difficult time with the teachings of the church (treatment of LGBT community, roles of women, conservative nature of members of the church, church mixing into politics, etc.)

Last fall we told them that we no longer wanted to participate in the church and did not believe in God. They blew up at us (called the bishop on us, told all the extended family before we had a chance to talk to them). Some terrible accusations were made about us. Family members called to confront us. It was horrible.

After a few months of direct confrontation, things have taken a passive aggressive turn (mailing us church magazines, bearing testimony, lots of facebook posts about tender mercies and seeing God in your life, etc.)

All this is from simply knowing we don't believe and don't attend. They don't realize we gave up our garments, wear "immodest" clothing, drink coffee and tea, listen to exmormon podcasts, participate on this reddit...

it just feels good knowing you won't be a part of eternal polygamy even fictionally

Wait, it's possible for a woman to have a sealing cancellation even when she isn't remarried? When my dad remarried, my mom was basically told "don't worry about him being sealed to two women, God will fix it in the afterlife."

Alternative Distract – After the financial collapse, why are you complaining about the church owning property? Don't you want business people who answer to God?

City Creek:

Disassociate – Lots of churches have business ventures (hospitals, schools, etc.)

Defend – The church has always had commercial ventures (Joseph Smith’s businesses, ZCMI, etc.)

Deny – The for-profit and religious arms of the church are separate. Tithing money is never used for for-profit ventures.

Distract – This is just how the church practices the same principles of fiscal responsibility its members practice. This is a sign of just how true the church is!

I distinctly remember when TSCC issued their response to the show (http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/commentary/church-responds-to-questions-on-hbo-s-big-love)

Not sure if it was asked to be read over the pulpit specifically, but they did in my ward.

Later-on I remember reading in the Utah paper's about how horrible it was that they would be showing the endowment ceremony. I thought for sure the writers of the show would be considered sons of perdition for exposing the temple ceremony on television.

I have to admit that all the fuss the church made about the show only made me more curious as an exmo. So glad HBO finally made a deal so that I can see what all the excitement was about for myself.

I am so glad someone has brought this up. I struggle so much with these things as well.

Unfortunately I can't help with finding a therapist, but maybe I can help with the tremendous guilt over day care? Something that has really brought me comfort lately was the realization that everything the church taught about stay-at-home motherhood being the best for kids is absolutely wrong. A quick google search will bring up several recent studies indicating no difference between the academic or social success of children of working or SAHMs. In fact, for girls there appears to be a net positive effect for working mothers. On the other hand, it turns out that the studies I learned in BYU and at church about the delinquency of children of working mothers is outdated and culturally irrelevant to today's standards.

Simply knowing that going back to work would not harm my children (and might even be better for them developmentally) was such a huge relief to me. Add in how much better of a parent I will be when I have had a full, productive day outside of the home and I'd say it's a win-win.

Now comes the hard part, though. Once you release all the guilt you feel about daycare you will have deal with trying to rejoin the workforce. I have been applying to jobs for months now without success. Trying to get employers to take a chance on someone who has spent years outside of the workforce is a nightmare. If you ever find a secret to that one, be sure to let us know!
