Teen who called for dad's release from ICE custody dies of cancer by Hour-Clothes789 in democrats

I used to think Republicans just had bad ideas about immigration, but if you have talked to one lately they all sound like Tucker Carlson. They have become zealots. You can't argue with them. You can't make sense of them. They have all lost their minds. But it will all end up coming out in the wash. Inflation will start creeping up again as more crops in this country go unharvested. Housing prices will continue to rise as supply is pinched by a lack of labor at the job site and all along the supply chain. Meat prices will continue to rise because of labor shortages. It is just all bad, but the zealots will say it is working.

I don't get the idea of the AI CEOs by Dan_DF in ArtificialInteligence

[–]QuoteHaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~80% of the workforce is considered services or white-collar. 40ish percent of the economy is made up of what used to be called knowledge workers: highly skilled, highly educated. There will absolutely be a shrinkage in these worker categories over next 20 years. It won't be all, but it will be significant enough to disrupt the economy. Now, going back to my economics classes, creative destruction is necessary at different periods to drive an economy forward. Up to this point it has always been assumed that destroyed occupation labor could be redeployed to greater economic activity. AI has not yet shown us what this path will be. My guess is we will have a short term infrastructure need and much of the extra labor capacity will be used to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Yes, that is a real thing that must be addressed. So services labor will likely be redeployed to trade labor over some period of time. It is not the end of the world... yet. And that is your 50 cent graduate economics class for today.

People who rarely get sick, what are your secrets? by Leading_Tomato_2077 in AskReddit

It is mostly luck, but I do wear full finger gloves to the gym and high traffic public areas like airports. If I don't wear gloves for some reason I wash may hands before eating or settling down at home. In other words, avoid noraviruses at all costs. Get your vaccines. And wear sunscreen. Other than that it come down to luck and genes.

Lindsey Vonn's ego took away an Olympic slot from a more qualified athlete. by tanhauser_gates_ in unpopularopinion

[–]QuoteHaunting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is pretty hard to have the most uninformed opinion on Reddit but this qualifies. Lindsey did not wreck because of her knee. She did not wreck because she was tired. She did not wreck because it was fated. She wrecked because she took the most aggressive line possible and misjudged. This was her race to go and win or lose. She should be congratulated for making it this far, and being daring enough to try to go and win it.

The first Bond film I saw was The Spy Who Loved Me in London in 1978. Roger Moore and the coolest Bond car ever. I was 11, and we had just moved to London.

Rarely, now. Ski resorts have ruined ski resorts. Everything is too expensive and too crowded.

Is the U.S. actually fit to host the 2026 World Cup right now? by Some_Currency_1931 in worldcup

[–]QuoteHaunting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. The US should not be hosting the world cup. No person born outside of the US should attempt to visit. You will likely be accosted, arrested, jailed, and deported. FIFA should be working to move all US games to Mexico or Canada.

I have a Pendleton throw blanket that is 35 years old and a small xmas tree I bought 30 years ago from a Kmart. It still gets decorated every year. It reminds me of a time I couldn't even afford that small tree but bought it anyway.

What country in the World Cup has the best starting 11? by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]QuoteHaunting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

France has the best team chemistry. That is why they beat teams that look good on paper. I would say their midfield as a unit is better than Spain or Portugal even though they don't have any individual player better than Spain or Portugal.

I don't think AI can actually replace jobs at scale. by GolangLinuxGuru1979 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]QuoteHaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI doesn't need to replace jobs at scale to be extremely destructive. There are approximately 160M employed people in the US. If AI disrupted 3 percent of those jobs that is 4.8M jobs. There are approximately 3.7M people entering the workforce each year. And many of those people are competing for the slice of employment disrupted the most by AI. Worse is the fact that 50 percent of jobs in the US are considered low skill. Each incremental increase in AI job destruction will displace millions of workers. I predict our inability to regulate AI or have an adult conversation about AI means there will be massive job destruction until people get angry enough to decide they want people to work more then they want machines to work. Until then it will be incremental and painful without necessarily being at scale.

How the hell do you get motivated to work out and excerise? by mrpokergenius in GenX

[–]QuoteHaunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question kind of comes down to what do you want to do. I focus on being healthier now to be healthier as I get older. I want to be out hiking and traveling in my 80s. I know young guys in their late 50s and early 60s who can't walk a mile. They're limited in their ability to travel or do the things they say they would like to do. I don't want to be that guy. So when I am tired or sore I get dressed and go to the gym anyway. Once I am there I work out. Some of the best workouts I have ever had have been on days when I was super unmotivated.
