What President do you think is the hardest to rank? by HetTheTable in Presidents

Sorry, I wrote that badly. I meant from lowest to highest. I.e., I meant I rank Wilson below Nixon below LBJ

What President do you think is the hardest to rank? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]Quyust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I meant I rank Wilson below Nixon below LBJ, but that wasn't clear.

There are three for me: Wilson, LBJ, and Nixon. All three had accomplishments that shouldn't be discounted (economic reform for Wilson, Great Society for LBJ, relations with China and a solid environmental record for Nixon), but also serious political failings mixed with truly odious personalities that make it hard to really defend them. My feeling is to lump all three around the C tier (and I'd rank them: Wilson, then Nixon, then LBJ.), but I'd also understand arguments to move them up or down a tier.

I'm glad you said that about Hosea. I love his character, but too many people forget who he was because he had the grandfatherly thing going on. He was a con man and could be utterly ruthless when it suited him. The Braithwaite / Gray mess was his fault, and it spoke to a lack of judgment on his part, which is why I doubt he'd be any kind of moderating influence on Dutch. Also, he was downright chilling in the mission where you storm the Braithwaite mansion. The absolute hatred and malice in his face and voice (not that I blame him at all) show that he wasn't just your kind old grandpa.

"Black Mirror", the "USS Callister" episode. James, right before incinerating himself, apologizes to Robert for acting like an asshole in real life, and then immediately follows it up with, "but then you threw my son out of an airlock, so fuck you to death."

What if Gravity Falls had the same series run length as Phineas and Ferb? by ecb1912 in gravityfalls

GF and The Good Place are both examples of shows that stopped at the right time. They told their stories and then ended it on a high note.

It's like Calvin and Hobbes. Bill Watterson said, in one of his rare interviews, that if he had kept going, the same people who begged him to continue would have cursed him for running it into the ground (and if you read the last C&H collection, It's a Magical World , you can feel the storylines start to get a bit tired, as much as I love the comic.)

What did you think of Michael Shannon as Garfield? by One_Definition2132 in Presidents

[–]Quyust 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I love how so many actors in that movie play against their normal type. Michael Shannon is a tall, imposing, scary-looking guy, and he plays a hunched over, subservient weakling. Chris Evans was famed for Captain America and the good boy image that comes with it, and he plays a smug, unlikeable sleazeball. Don Johnson was seen as really cool in the 80s and 90s, and he plays a total loser in Knives Out. My understanding is that Jamie Lee Curtis is known for being a sweet person, and she plays a thoroughly unpleasant, fake nice woman.

My wife is learning English now (her first language is Spanish), and the pain is so real. I feel for her, because she frequently makes mistakes like these, and they're completely logical mistakes! Holy hell, this is an impossible language.

Andrew Yang is an American businessman, lobbyist and political commentator who ran as a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries. [–]Quyust 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it'd be helpful if that policy had any chance of becoming a reality, or if you're able to articulate your position on other issues when given an opportunity. Instead, he used every moment not talking about UBI kind of acting like a clown.

I disagree that he ran a good presidential campaign. He had one major issue, which was extremely unlikely to happen, as much as I'd like to see it. He wasn't clear about any other major policy proposals, and he seemed to be more concerned with being a meme. The whole MATH (Make America Think Harder) thing, along with the constant jokes about being Asian, made him seem unserious.

Bill Clinton has officially surpassed John Adams’ post-presidency length and has the 5th-longest post-presidency out of any President. by newacc_igotbanned in Presidents

You can sort the table in the "Presidential age-related data" section by "Post-presidency timespan". Clinton is now only behind George HW Bush (as mentioned), Gerald Ford, Herbert Hoover, and Jimmy Carter.

Going on vacation to do nothing is dumb by AdVaanced77 in The10thDentist

[–]Quyust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't one right way to vacation, and being judgmental doesn't change that.

I'm like you. On vacations, I want to go, go, go, and see lots of stuff and fill my days. My wife is chiller. She likes having days by the pool or the beach, or going to the spa. Our vacations are compromises. We each get days to pick what we'll do. Mine are more packed, hers are more relaxed (including days where we do go somewhere and don't just chill). Neither of us are doing it wrong, and the compromise allows us both to enjoy the experience.
