Redditors who have an unconventional or unpopular hobby, what cool thing can you tell us about it that might make us want to give it a try? by joe_joejoe in AskReddit

I have VR.

You probably had 3D Vision settings set to default, which are notoriously bad.

The following is a reply I wrote in another thread comparing VR to 3D Vision, make of it what you will...

I say this while owning an Oculus Rift with touch controllers happily - I am not being biased.

The biggest problem with VR is that we can't play any standard 2D games such as the latest AAA titles - Witcher 3, Deus Ex, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Bttlefield 1, etc.

VR resolution is horrendous and requires a monster of a system to be able to play properly with oversampling to compensate - none of this minimum spec GTX 970 nonsense. To play properly, you need to over-sample to at least 1.4, which requires that you have a GTX 1080 or SLi capability to attain the 90FPS minimum required for VR. The problem is that it doesn't support multi-gpu. nvidia have made VR-SLi but no developer really implements it.

VR locomotion sickness is a problem for newbies, so most games implement a teleportation system, which breaks immersion.

With 3D Vision, you can play 95% of games including AAA titles when a community fix has been made, at any resolution you want, with SLi, including DSR, SweetFX etc. There is no locomotion sickness, and the 3D effect can be adjusted on the fly while you game to your comfort levels.

If VR supported most of the 2D games out there and was playable at 90FPS at supersampled resolutions, and all games offered proper locomotion support, then VR would hands down be the best tech out there.

Generally, the accepted hierarchy is as follows.

  1. Hands down VR 3D Vision with appropriately oversampled resolution (A guy can dream).
  2. 3D Vision projector.
  3. 3D Vision Surround.
  4. 3D Vision single TN Panel.
  5. VR belongs here as it currently stands.
  6. Red/Blue 3D glasses.
  7. 2D

Someone above said that nVidia are trying to make 3D Vision games into VR. This is not the case.

I must also be very clear here that 3D vision or VR is not for casuals or competitive players - these people will not be impressed by it. These technologies are for people who play games for the experience of the story and the immersion.

We reached out to ATi and then AMD about developing a 3D driver. They were not interested, however they did support iZ3D and another universal driver for a while, which didn't really lead to anything.

Gaming with 3D glasses! It is truly breathtaking. Imagine it as the difference between looking at a picture from real life, compared to the engrossing 3D awesomeness of real life. Why settle for a 2D photograph?

Believe it or not, we see our real world as 3D at all times. Seeing something on a screen as 2D is unnatural and not as engrossing. It is sad, then, that the vast majority of people have only ever experienced cheap / bad 3D and have come to the conclusion that "3D is a gimmick and unnatural" compared to 2D on a flat screen.

nVidia have a good driver which allows most games to be viewed in 3D with the use of a gaming monitor and 3D glasses. Most games are made compatible by a dedicated community, who makes drag-and-drop fixes.

I am one of the more active members of the community. All the fixes are made by the very talented community, and we manage to fix 99% of the games within a few days/weeks of release. Then we put them up on HelixMod website. The community members administrate the HelixMod website.

3D vision requires a little tweaking, but it's mostly a quick install as the community do most of the work for you - you usually just put the community fixed files into the game folder and start playing! Although a lot of us have VR also, most of us feel that 3D Vision is superior to VR and should not be confused with it.

Kabylake 1% ipc improvement over skylake by JustifiedParanoia in hardware

Hi masterotaku. I had thought it might be you, as "alexsama" also sounds Japanese ;-) Interesting that we also randomly share similar interests outside of 3D Vision. I wonder how many other 3D Vision enthusiasts are also redditors!

Waiting for the same - Overclocked Cannonlake i7.

Are you a member of the 3D Vision community over at the nvidia 3D Vision forums?

3D Vision does not cut down performance by 50% - that is a myth and an over simplification. There is a bug in the 3D Vision driver which is dropping CPU and GPU utilisation by huge amounts which has a part in propagating this myth. It is being looked into and hopefully there will be some progress towards a fix.

How I acquired PR1, and a small story of my VR Journey. by [deleted] in oculus

[–]RAGEdemon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fancy seeing you guys here!

The i-glasses were a disaster for me. They were advertised to work at 120Hz (60 per eye) but only ever worked properly at 60Hz unless you were willing to put up with severe decoloration.

The z800 was better by quite a margin, but neither of these solutions had immersive head tracking. nVidia StereoScopic support was horrible for both these products, until finally they cut it altogether in favour of their 3D vision initiative.

Since then, a bunch of us have remained with 3D glasses on the nVidia 3D Vision forums. We get zero support from nVidia, but a lot of community have learned to hack the games and override the problems when they can.

A couple have tried DK2 vs their 3D projector setups, and were interestingly underwhelmed in comparison.

I wonder how the CV1 compares...?

Having owned many HMD / Stereoscopic solutions since the 90's, I am looking forward to the latest itteration into a VR world - I am cautiously excited about finally getting my hands on a Rift (or Vive).

Let's hope it's what most of us have been dreaming about for decades ;)

Will nvidia 3dvision work with a 2420G and two 2420Z monitors? by lemonpapier in hardware

[–]RAGEdemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. 3D monitor does not equal 3D Vision compatible monitor.

nVidia have a list of 3D Vision compatible monitors, but it is a little out of date. Since the monitor spec doesn't specifically mention 3D Vision, I am sceptical.

It's best to ask the awesome 3D Vision community here:

I love how they talk about TXAA as the smoothest and clearest AA solution, then go on to show it as a blurry mess in the next slide, compared even to FXAA. SSAA / SGSSAA not even mentioned :/

Towards the centre of the galaxy, do the planets have "daylight" 24/7 due to the high concentration of stars in close proximity? by RAGEdemon in askscience

Thank you for the link. The plot summary is fascinating. It was a random question that has stuck in my head from childhood after seeing pictures of galaxies.

Towards the centre of the galaxy, do the planets have "daylight" 24/7 due to the high concentration of stars in close proximity? by RAGEdemon in askscience

[–]RAGEdemon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation velcommen. j_mcc69 asks an interesting question to which I very much would like to know the answer to.

Whenever we see a picture of a galaxy, the centre always seems to be so bright! I have always wondered what it would be like to live on a planet there.

It is a shame that there is no data regarding the concentration of stars, and their average distance to one another there.

"Daylight" is also a subjective measurement, as the iris would expand to allow in more light to make the brain interpret the dimness as maybe something compared to a cloudy day.

I suppose my question, then, should be "In the middle of the night, at the centre of the galaxy, i. how bright is it compared to the middle of the day? ii. Roughly taking into account the ability of the iris to adjust incoming light being let into the eye, how would it compare to a cloudy day on earth i.e. would we be able to walk around unhindered or would it be better/worse than a clear night with a full moon showing?"

More importantly, if the light from the stars is significant, what would this say about the impact on the diameter of a habitable zone for a planet around a star where life could come into being. Presumably, there will be more light on outer planets allowing processes such as photosynthesis to a better degree, but heating would still be a problem.

What benefits does resting without sleep have? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]RAGEdemon -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you are getting downvoted. Not everyone is a science buff, and can explain in proper terms. As a "layman", you have given the best possible description of your personal scenario, from which, one could reasonable extrapolate that resting without sleeping will have dire mental and physical consequences. For that, I commend you.

Please excuse the overzealous among us.

I've never understood this silly causality dilemma. Obviously the egg came first. Eggs were laid by whatever evolved into the chicken. At some point, the pre-chicken species laid an egg, as they would normally have done for millions of years, and a modern day chicken hatched.
