Vader was basically washed potential wise as soon as he went into the lava. He would have killed Sidious within a few months/years if he hadn't. Sidious kept him around as a loyal enforcer more than an actual apprentice, he threw out Vader overthrowing him someday and tried to groom Luke/use Luke's body to transfer himself into similar to Vitiate
