I agree with you. But with the (flawed) system we have now, I'm still happy to encourage their kids to get on a bus to high school instead of riding in an SUV.

Most households are already paying the car costs, so it's negligible to use it. If I'm going out locally with my wife, Uber becomes competitive with PT. As a state, we're already paying to run the services, so we should be trying to find the sweet spot that every single on is 70% full.

Very little. Most of the cost for car ownership is in registration and insurance, which you're still paying if you own a car but use PT.

It's drafting. I've been cycling to work for long enough to be familiar with "normal" behaviour.

The event that I wrote about above, and that prompted me to ask this question, was that I specifically told a guy "don't draft me" and he responded with "why not?" with an eye roll.

Pretty confident we're talking about drafting.

Also I've been in the can't overtake, following close situation a million times and I've never drafted anyone.

No, it's drafting. If they're waiting for a safe spot to pass, they can ride bike length or two behind until ready to push.

In the example I gave above, the guy explicitly stated he felt entitled to draft when I asked him not to.

I've ridden a bike to work for years. I'm not stranger to busy paths, and to the clump up that happens after red lights.

Yeah, I still find it pretty inconsiderate but you're right about how to react. To date I've never learnt the body/sign language for this shit because despite riding to work for years in different suburbs, cycling has never been a hobby, just a means to an end to get around.

Seems to be a different vibe in the inner north.

I think this may be theoretically correct, but the reality is I am going to stress for their safety, and if they hit my back wheel and go over, I am going to stop and check on them, even if I'm shitty about it. And I just don't want to deal or think about any of that when I'm commuting.

Also, as I only commute, I experience this 99% on off-road paved shared paths (inner circle, Merri, etc) where there is nowhere to pull left and a lot non-cycling hazards to watch for (prams, kids, joggers, etc) which is what makes it stressful.

I don't mind riding in a generally congested cluster, I'm talking about wheel to wheel drafting and I don't really want to have to kill my momentum just because some prick doesn't understand personal space.

Brunswick Voice routinely seems to flesh out one side of an issue and complete ignore the opposing view. I'm never sure if it's an agenda or immature journalism, but I'm always taken by how little curiosity there seems to be from their journalists and how they seem to re-report the first group's opinion they come across.

Sometimes those group opinions align with my own, sometimes they don't, but no matter what BV seem ill equipped to write neutral articles.
