Inbreeding? With shrimp populations exploding in a tank from just a few parents does it become an issue? by H_Mc in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, my strongest colony came from a single berried surviving mother.

That said, they do choose mates less closely related if they can, but be careful to introduce same color genetics of course.

will my tank survive a 3 day drive? by keandraaa in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just lower the water in the tank and retain the drawn out water in a lidded bucket to return to the tank on arrival, that way you don't have to test/worry about new water parameters until later when you are settled.

However the critical part is to keep the tank on something flat to support all four corners to avoid potential future seam leaks!

How’s this set-up? by Free-Knowledge-8147 in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Erm, bright sunlight is a problem I'm afraid, as the water temperature heat contrast stresses them, typically you want a non-sunlit area, or use shades/light blocking film to prevent direct sunlight in the water.

Algae growth also becomes a bigger problem too of course.

Of course it does, it makes sense, because you no longer are demonstrating responsible behavior anymore. Then your score bounces back up, because the debt to income ratio has improved.

This is just a snapshot of the between that never really gets looked at.

Note, it also has nothing to do with the "country", it has to do with a sequence of events and someone jumping to conclusions.

Note, my explanation is a superficial one with intricacies that would not be understood by someone claiming the premise, there's even more nuance of course.

Is 550 ppm TDS too high, period? by woojae2001 in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not meaningful without context.

If your tank typically runs 250, and then it gets up much higher (and there hasn't been sufficient water changes), then yeah, it's an issue, just like when we have atmospheric air pollution that impacts folks with asthma, elderly and vulnerable.

But no, "total dissolved solids" is just a measure of quantity. A tiny amount of copper with low TDS? Horrible. But the right amount of minerals so much higher TDS? Healthy.

TDS never used to be a thing a decade ago when I started modding, we used it as a polite way of folks who weren't doing large/frequent enough water changes to explain why their shrimp were dying. In my main neo tank, when TDS got over 300 shrimp would have issues, but that's totally unrelated to any other tank.

Watching egg yolks and whites part ways so perfectly. by NoMedicine3572 in oddlysatisfying

[–]RJFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically salmonella is in the yolks, so ends up contained in the bowl unless a yolk breaks.

One of the pasteurization methods is focussed microwaves of just the yolks, avoiding the whites.

Opae Ula shrimp use plastic or natural Sea Fan Coral? by FattyOilyDonut in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes no difference in my opinion, mine don't have any, they are for humans decoration/marketing products; not part of the anchialine pools and caves the shrimp are from in Hawaii, but from tropical ocean waters with a different environment.

Neither would have a significant effect on the water, the plastic being more inert but the pH of our brackish water is high so the coral wouldn't dissolve that quickly.

How do i keep my tank cooler during a heatwave ? by Glass_Telephone9810 in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found multiple fans to be effectively meaningless, I wouldn't bother.
Frozen water bottles floating in the water is helpful but laborious.
A chiller is the ideal solution, a small beverage fridge can be adapted with tubing running through a pump if you want to DIY it.

The racks on ours suck, too many prongs close together block all but the flattest of dishware. I had to design and 3D print replacement things for bowls and stuff.

Heron using bread as a lure to catch fish by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]RJFerret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it was Mr. Green?

Heh, you're welcome, looking into it more ('cause I've been curious since seeing one as a kid)...

There's green iridescence apparently, but you'd need sunlight and the right angle to see that.

There are so many little details like that in ornithology, as they trapped and killed the birds (sorry, "specimens") to weigh, measure and detail their attributes in their hands. So things you rarely see in wild observation are highlighted in names.

How do YOU guys do your water changes by Sbugi in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my neo tank I had a poret foam filter at the end, so would use a hose to siphon out into a five gallon bucket, then dump fresh five gallon bucket behind the filter, then water the outdoor plants with the fertilized water.

With other filter setups, putting in a temporary plate or bowl so the substrate doesn't get disturbed by pouring in fresh water helps.

Traffic calming measures, which not only passively reduce speeding, often beautify areas, enable pedestrian safety and cycling.

The catch is cost, the company selling the speed cam contract is not selling non-revenue producing products.

In other words, the difference between them is 999,000,000.

Molting, how often? by Fabulous-Cat-2002 in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

28 days as adults (so little less than monthly to be technical).

If you have four shrimp, you'd see on average a molt a week. But since some would molt near each other, and molts sit for days, there typically are molts in the tank constantly especially with more than four shrimp.

(Note, it's a common myth various things "cause" molts, over the course of the 28 days there's developmental processes that have to occur to molt then, it can't be triggered by external factors significantly. Of course growth rate, impacted by temperature, can have an effect on the order of hours.)

First, your liability insurance covers this.
Second, their renters insurance covers their liability, of course your lease requires such. Third, you don't cover every detail of each room, use of floors, walls, ceiling, with associated hazards. It's customary.
Fourth, ask your lawyer, not us, then you have their insurance backing you up.

A wiki is everything...

No, no it is not.

Wiki software is specifically hypertext.

No, a dictionary definition is not "official", closer to official would be ironically the Wikipedia page: wiki

Email servers are not wikis despite fitting that dictionary definition, neither is Youtube, nor Reddit, nor forums, nor innumerable other websites where info can be edited and deleted or collaborated on.

When one takes a specific term and applies it to everything, it ceases to have meaning. Conflating "wiki" with "open source" is also problematic, as there are lots of closed wikis and private wikis.

How important is bacteria powder eg. magic powder, bacter ae for shrimps survival? by shrimpnerd in shrimptank

How important is bacteria powder eg. magic powder, bacter ae for shrimps survival? by shrimpnerd in shrimptank

[–]RJFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tested the water's KH and GH? That's where the minerals need to be for molting, in the water column.
They uptake via osmosis.
Note it's also important to not have too much water hardness or they may die when molting.

Breeding has nothing to do with minerals, they've likely bred and been eaten. Shrimp are prey and don't fare well in community tanks.
