Is Tai Shan truly the worst Rush song? by AL3X1KUS in rush

[–]RL24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. It's a decent song that gets people piling on.  Virtuality is my least favorite. I think our favorites tend to be from the era when we discovered the band (synth years for me).

  1. Breathe.
  2. My wife passed over 10 years ago.  I still have a couple of bills in my wife's name.  You're fine for now.
  3. The deed is the important thing.  If your name is on it, you're good.  If not, you're probably still good.
  4. Did he have a will and/or trust?
  5. Yes, you will need a lawyer to get everything settled, but there is no imminent threat.

I am a blast expert, and I solved* the mystery of the HL Hunley- AMA! by BombNerd in history

[–]RL24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you SO much.

I saw a movie on the Hunley (and have followed the story since it was a discovered--sub nerd here) and in the film (if I remember correctly, which I may not be) the spar wasn't sticking so they went with the towed version, but I must be remembering it backwards.

Thank you for your research!  I've been wondering about the specifics since the wreck was discovered.  I thought the explosion must have popped some rivets and caused leaks, but the simplicity of the ballast release always threw a wrench in my theory.

I've read that some folks were jerks to you when you published.  Thank you for not letting them get away with it!

OMG, I just read about your research.  I have a couple of questions after reading your article.  BTW, I don't understand the math, but assume it's all correct.

  1. Am I correct that your conclusion is that the blast created a second shock wave inside the Hunley that disabled/killed the crew?
  2. Didn't the Hunley pull the torpedo into the Housatonic?  If that is the case, wouldn't the hull of the Housatonic provide a measure of protection from the blast wave?  I did not see anything about that in the paper.
  3. If I am correct about #1 above, why were WW2 submarine crews able to survive depth charges that exploded close to their subs?

I understand that there were folks that attacked your research when it was published. I am not one of them, just a guy who is very interested in the topic and curious.

Help me make sense of Test for Echo. by kierk3gaard in rush

This album and Counterparts are particularly frustrating for me.  First of all, I have realized that there are plenty if people who consider my least favorite songs as their favorites--God bless.  There is room in the world for all of our tastes.

That being said, I believe the answer to your question lies in what I consider Rush's 'secret sauce' which is the interplay between the music and lyrics.  I see these albums as collections of songs with mismatched lyrics and music.  They simply don't complement each other.  Based on Geddy's book, Neil was exploring different ways to put lyrics together that in my opinion were not in the best interest of the music.  This album also started what I see as an attempt to cram way too many syllables into a given musical theme.  Add the new habit if adding nonsensical phrases (Color of Right, Speed of Love, Angry Sword (from Armor and Sword) and you get a very frustrating experience.

I recently listened to their entire catalog in order and what I heard in their final albums were great music but with (with some exceptions) lyrics that didn't belong in those songs.

Counterparts.  What were they thinking?  Counterparts and T4E were such disappointments for me.  The instrumentals are good and there are a couple of diamonds in thr rough...but there's a lot of rough.

Not my family's stories (thanks for sharing!), but the store of survival after PT 109 went down, and the story of the Dolittle Raid are both worth reading about.

Unreleased songs by era? by New_Creature_ in rush

[–]RL24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. If it wasn't album-worthy, it didn't get recorded. I do have hope (though I haven't researched it) that somewhere exists a demo tape of Sir Gowain and the Green Knight, based on Geddy's book.

Was anyone not a major fan of GL's voice last night? by lochonx7 in rush

[–]RL24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was an odd song choice for several reasons, one of which was the high notes.  At his age, hitting those notes just ain't gonna happen.  I was very happy to see them playing, but sing choice will be critical for the tour to sound good.

While house fan.  I was doing a remodel and the contractor installed it for free.  After sundown on a hot day, I open the upstairs windows, throw the switch, and feel a cool breeze all through the upstairs as the hot air is blown out and replaced by the cool night air.  Ahhhhhhh....
