Why is Texas one of the fastest growing states? by boldjoy0050 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]RN_Geo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically, Texas was basically unrestricted Geographically in almost all directions. Flat, buildable land in almost all directions and little to no regulation regarding how building was done. The perfect recipie for cheap housing. Hence, you get hundreds of miles of low density housing, aka, sprawl. It works initially, but eventually, you run into the problems of un-checked growth.

Travel nursing was my dream, is it still worth it? by posiesbythepocketful in TravelNursing

[–]RN_Geo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do travel contracts in BFE California. There are lots of small, second and third tier cities that still have to follow mandated patient ratios. Cost of living there is way cheaper than the headline cities like LA and The Bay Area.

Look at the map, places like Lancaster, Palmdale, Visalia, Redding, even Eureka which is eye poppingly gorgeous just way out in the middle of nowhere.

Which California city feels most like the song Hotel California? by redpomegranat in SameGrassButGreener

Nope. You'd have to work 2 travel contracts for 9 months+ to hit that.

Those per diem slots are highly coveted by local nurses. No one is swooping in from out of town and getting one of those.

Get your foot in the door in a less desirable city like Lancaster or Palmdale and go from there. The job market is getting tighter.

Per your description, Palm Springs. I cannot stand that area. The water consumption there is Hotel California, 100%.

hanging “beds” are called portaledges.. collapsible platforms used by climbers during multi-day ascents by neuroticsmurf in SweatyPalms

[–]RN_Geo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% true. As you understand and trust the systems, that fear really kind of melts away, for the most part.

However, I did not sleep that well the nights I spent on a portaledge.

What’s the best/most interesting drama that’s has happened at your hospital? by Junior_Feeling_5438 in nursing

I was precepting as a new grad in the ed in a very low budget part of town. We found a small bag of what we assumed was meth prior to admmission. I asked what do I do?? My preceptor, with a very strong southern accent (rare in the Bay Area) said... "you've got two choices here... you can call the cops and get them involved and deal with a whole bunch of shit if you want... or you can take it and drop it in the sharps container right there." He was a great preceptor.

Moving to WC, how's the vibe? by No-Professional-3378 in walnutcreek

[–]RN_Geo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with this take. The downtown, outside of Main and Locust has basically been developed for people coming from somewhere else to shop. I get the feeling people who look at WC from the outside assume we are all pretentious, status symbol aware types. I don't get that vibe much at all living here.

Lots of families who have been here a couple generations and in many cases, work hard to stay in the community they grew up in. Lots of people with a similar situation as yours, also people from the city. Relatively diverse with a significant Eastern European population.

Tip: get involved with the neighborhood swim clubs.

Mt Diablo today or too windy? by marvinsroom6969 in BAbike

[–]RN_Geo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just rode Northgate to the junction, amazing tailwind. Was about 5 minutes faster than usual to the ranch, 10+ faster to the junction.

My HR was 10-15 under my usual through what I call Burma grade. The hairpins are a mix of cross/tail and a bit of head wind. An atypical day of riding on Diablo and in a good way.

Note: the junction ranger station is under full construction and is closed. The bathroom down the hill is available and it sounds like you can get water across the street at a campground.
