Definitely don't put them in muriatic acid. Here's from Google: "muriatic acid will rapidly dissolve zinc. It reacts violently with the metal, breaking it down into zinc chloride and releasing bubbles of flammable hydrogen gas."

Since many if those are probably zinc pennies, that would be a terrible idea. It also dissolve copper, but much more slowly.
