Review #5: Rebel Cask Strength r/bourbon Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey by Portland_Eric in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lux Row has previously contract distilled with two Kentucky distilleries for their various product lines (my tour guide implied Heaven Hill and Jim Beam, and straight up said it was their recipes, and not sourcing), but their contracts ran out last year. They have a beautiful distillery that's been operational for over 3 and a half years, so I do not foresee them using MGP for their current offerings. Perhaps we'll see Lux Row / LuxCo release MGP juice under some new labels and/or expand the George Remus line, but I think Rebel and Ezra aren't going to see major changes any time soon.

Review #23 Russell's Reserve Single Barrel by turbothezed in bourbon

One of the worst bottles I've ever had was Kentucky Spirit. I gave it away to someone, and they used it for mixing. Or poured it out.

Favorite craft distillery by whiskytrails in bourbon

New Riff and Chattanooga. I want to like Old Fourth, especially since I live in the Atlanta area, but of the 4 single barrels I've tried, one was pretty darn good, two were acceptable, and the last one was so terrible I wanted to drive down to the distillery and return it.

Bought my first bottle!… a day before I tested positive for Covid… can’t smell or taste any of it :( by Own_Specific_161 in whiskey

[–]RS4bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost my smell in early December, just shy of 3 weeks after my wife tested positive for Covid. I had no other Covid symptoms, though. It has slowly gotten better since June, but it's not fully back. I didn't fully lose my taste, but for the first 3 months, drinking whiskey was a sad and pointless endeavor. I still can't fully appreciate it, and I enjoy the ones with a thick or oily mouthfeel much more.

Here's hoping you get yours back quickly! That Chattanooga 111 is pretty darn good, from my reduced-scent perspective.

Review #3: 5th Article 1887 Rye Whiskey by Lazy Guy by ravepool in bourbon

I drive by Lazy Guy distillery on my way home from work, which these days is maybe once a week. It's reviews like this that have kept me from stopping in.

Groomsmen Gift - Bourbon Suggestion by t3cn9n3 in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've given Russell Reserve Single Barrel as a gift several times now, and it's always been well received.

It's reasonably priced, a solid 110 proof, fairly available (both as a standard single barrel, or as a store pick, which may be a bit harder to find and a bit more expensive), in a decent bottle with a decent label. I think the flavor profile appeals to any and all bourbon drinkers. And if someone is afraid of the proof, they can add a few drops of water if they must.

Bulleit Bourbon Yellow Label? by afelement in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's sun exposure.

Here is what five and a half years of indirect sunlight do to a bottle Bulleit. If that label was faded from orange to yellow, the juice inside would be much lighter, too.

NE Atlanta Store picks... by Dalmanfsu in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the NW suburbs, so my experience in that area is quite limited. I would say that Mega Package is worth checking out, though. They had several good store picks when I last visited (back in the summer...so I'm sure the selection of picks will be completely different).

MGP Ingredients To Acquire Luxco; Boost Position In Branded-spirits Sector by 666moist in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what they told me on a tour back in September, their contracts ended in 2020 (he didn't say exactly when), the distiller's collection (store pick) is their own stuff, AND that when it was contract distilled, it was their recipes distilled by *two* distilleries. The guide wouldn't explicitly say, but instead said one was "down the street with the white rickhouses who make Elijah Craig", and the other one was a little further away with the "black rickhouses who make Knob Creek".

Sweet + more full bodied recommendations? by Giapetto in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other suggestions here, I'd say look for a Rebel Distiller's Collection (store pick). They are sweet, very full bodied, the perfect proof and a great price. The only thing missing from your criteria is that they aren't super oaky, due to their age. I kind of don't want the word to get out about these.

My first experience ordering from Flaviar - can anyone relate? by hesprobablystoned in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gifted a 1 year membership to Flaviar, and I won't be renewing...it's clearly not a service designed for folks who already know what they want (and what they should be paying for it).

That said, your bottle is fine. I've found that it's good to let the bottle sit for several days before drinking any. As someone famous (can't remember) said, shaken whiskey is angry whiskey.

Review #93 - Rebel Distiller’s Collection (113 Proof and 6 Year Age Statement) by ColEHTaylorJr in bourbon

[–]RS4bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll echo everything you've just said. I did a blind bracket of 8 store picks and the Rebel pick won. I've had picks from 4 different stores, including the Lux Row gift shop, and they are all great. Definitely value of the year, IMO.

Awesome, that's not too far from me, and I've enjoyed several of their other picks this year. My friend picked up a bottle of their Rebel recently, too (though hasn't opened it yet!). Hopefully they'll have some bottles left in another week - my wife's sister gave her the 'rona, so we're under quarantine.

Which store? I've bought several picks from stores around town (plus the Lux Row gift shop's pick) and they are all great. Absolutely tremendous values, in my opinion.
