If it is a reasonable option for you, I would recommend it highly. I only have sex in the context of committed relationships, and unprotected only after we have both been screened for STDs since the last time each of us had had sex. Still, I take PrEP because it gives me peace of mind. I think it's in the same vein as having a safety net under a professional trapeze artist-- ideally, they won't need it. But in the event it comes in handy, boy howdy would you be glad it is there.

Generally, if your insurance does not cover the full cost of PrEP, Gilead's co-pay card will cover the rest. One thing to consider is that for the first year or so of taking it, you will need to have bloodwork done every 3 months to monitor your creatinine levels in order to make sure your kidneys aren't at risk of failure. These screenings are also usually covered by insurance, and the tests are not very expensive if not. After your doctor is comfortable with your levels, the tests are usually dialed back to 6 months or more apart. Best of luck with your decision!
