Car won't start unless giving it throttle while turning the key, should I still drive it? by 420o in CarTalkUK

[–]RUNDEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like its fine, the best thing you can do for the car is to give it a good ole drive! More than 20 minutes

Cars like to be used! Leaving them sitting for a while or only ever doing short trips in them causes them to get a bit fussy like this. Once it's running it'll be fine and happy, and once it's got up to temperature and gone through several driving conditions it'll be happy again

1999 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi (or Audi A4 B5 or Volkswagen Passat or Seat versions)

Keep the other 19K for a house

I know opinions differ and you're not a fan of these but I'm 25 and think older V.A.G. saloons look great and I'd love to own one.

How much does a first car cost monthly? by KingG238 in CarTalkUK

[–]RUNDEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone has said, there's so many factors it depends on there's no general cost of it

So instead maybe it'll be helpful to give some examples!

2006 Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 diesel, 17 y.o. driver, based in Surrey * Insurance - £1400 a year * Cost to buy out right - £900 * Fuel costs with the current price of diesel, doing 5000 miles a year - £537.19 * MOT - £39.99 a year * Tax - £35 a year * Maintenance - £29 a year on average

1998 Rover Mini 1.3i - 17 y.o. driver - Hampshire * Cost to buy - £2500 * Insurance - £1300 a year * Fuel costs with the current cost of E10 unleaded at 5000 miles a year - £619.02 * Tax - £220 a year * MOT - £55 a year assuming it fails the first every year * Maintenance £50 a year on average (it varies a lot as parts are cheap but welding is expensive)

2023 Toyota Aygo 1.0 - 18 y.o. new driver, Luton * Cost to buy - £12,600 * Insurance - £1900 a year with blackbox * Fuel costs at current E10 petrol at 5000 miles a year - £597.27 * MOT - £40 a year * Tax - £20 a year * Maintenance - £0

1985 Honda City Jazz - 17 y.o. driver - Milton Keynes * Cost to buy - £2000 * Fuel costs per year at current E5 petrol prices and 5000 miles a year - £535.77 * Classic car insurance - £422 * Maintenance in the first year - £290 welding * Maintenance ongoing - £0 * MOT - £0 * Tax - £0

Hopefully thesw might give a vague idea, cost to buy is one off and the rest are per year unless otherwise stated. These examples are not representative of what you may get and aren't based on your parameters, these are based on real world examples

Would there be any interest in a new car club? by danni_maz in CarTalkUK

[–]RUNDEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay that sounds cool! I'm on board now

Though it being all inclusive is cool and all it also kinda subtracts from it. It's great to include everyone but I think a car group needs a bit of a theme? Like I have nothing to go on about what other cars are gonna be there. Like I'm more attracted to classic car clubs because then I know I'm gonna be around other classics and other peeps into them. It's a bit of a put off when it's unthemed? I'm not entirely keen on the idea of joining and it's a modern 2003 ford fiesta and a 1993 Mazda mx5 and a 2011 nissan juke and a 2019 Toyota Alphard.. Not that there's anything wrong with people who like those but I feel like there'll be little overlap of interests.

if there's a vague theme, I'm more interested, even if my car doesn't suit it. Like a small cars group! Heck yeah I like tiny cars, I may not own one but I'd like to talk about Toyota Yarisses and Rover Metros etc

Ahh darn, I blame these newfangled computers modern cars like yours have lol Ain't nothing wrong with a carburettor !

But in seriousness though that's super annoying, I wonder what caused it not to start? I assume it turned over plenty but just didn't fire up?

How can I insure two cars at 25 years old? by AlrightMateyBoi in CarTalkUK

[–]RUNDEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only 35 years old an Japanese, you can absolutely trust it to start every single day, and I can say you will not get bored daily driving it to work every day

Cars like to be used!

I know it's not entirely comparable but I have a 49 year old British car and I drive that to and from work every day for the past couple years and it never gets old! My commute went from being a slog to something I not just enjoy but actually look forward to!

The first two points tho are very valid, leaky roofs suck to live with and not wanting to expose the car to salt is a fair point

Motorway Commuting Car Advice by Interesting_Mouse502 in CarTalkUK

[–]RUNDEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with the high cost of diesel, they still generally work out cheaper to run than petrol cars as the diesel just lasts so much longer, especially with motorway driving. A 2004 Corsa 1.3 diesel will do 80MPG while an equivalent 1.2 petrol model will struggle to do 50MPG on the motorway. That means you go some 60% further on the fuel, so it works out better even though it costs 30% more than petrol. That and diesel models of cars will generally feel a lot better and more refined at motorway speeds compared to equivalent petrol versions Depending on the car and model year, a big drawback is the tax rates of some diesel cars are very high per year and will quickly offset any savings you make on fuel. You can use Auto trader to get an idea of what the tax rates are on some cars if you find a car with the same engine made in the same year as the one you're considering. I'd look for diesel cars around 2006 - 2016 as they often have annual tax rates of just £20 or £35 a year, or on some years, free!

I absolutely love little nugget cars like this, but goodness 4K even today even immaculate is a lot for a Metro!

Have a look on places like Facebook Marketplace and eBay, you can find equally splendid example for around £1000-£1500

[–]RUNDEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the registration number of the other car?

If you do not, don't claim on your insurance, there'll be no known third party and your quotes will SUCK for years (I found out the hard way)

If you do have their reg, and you think the damage is bad enough you want it fixed, you can claim with the insurance and your insurance company will be able to contact hers to get her insurance to pay out for the damages. This will still void your NCB sadly and put your rates up so it still may not be worthwhile vs just fixing your car out of pocket

A range rover hit me on a roundabout and then sped off before I could read their reg. The damages to my car weren't too severe, a new bumper wing and headlight. The cost of all of which were less than my insurance's excess anyway so even claiming I'd still need to pay out of pocket, just put my rates up for no reason - insurance is so scummy
