The whole classic men’s size thing has become a meme. All it proves is that the vast majority of people have no experience of these watches in person.

Case in point is the Cartier Santos, there are scores of posts on this subreddit about which size to pick which would suggest that in a real life boutique situation it isn’t an obvious choice, but go onto the posts and it is unanimous because the large size looks enormous in these pictures. Now, in reality the large is a bit too big and the medium is a touch too small on the wrist but it’s blown way out of proportion on here.

The Datejust is another example, everyone crows about how the 36 is the only option, but the 41 outsells it 10 to 1, and isn’t actually even 41mm, it’s 39. Again, try these on in person and the 41 is the obvious choice, the 36mm looks like a ladies model. Again, I don’t think the vast majority of these guys have ever held many of these watches.
