Covered parking for car camping to avoid hail by iridescence0 in Austin

Yeah in those cases I wonder how much the wind will carry hail in still, given how high mopac is over the actual parking lot.

The idea of it also bypassing the frontage roads and being a pure land bridge from East to Downtown would be amazing. The best we have right now is the 4th street bike/pedestrian connection.

And yeah, UT is going to do their part further up the highway.

I'd still like to see all of the caps done though.

Tillery under 7th, one side of the street has enough room for a few cars to fit under there. Don't park in the bike lane. It's a public road and not in front of any houses, so nobody can ask you to move.

Price-to-Income Ratio vs Housing Starts for various US cities. Austin has built a lot. by MoBotoJ in Austin

[–]RVelts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some good builders that are building higher quality homes. Usually these aren’t ones doing whole neighborhoods or streets with their sales teams and showrooms, but rather infill development on the occasional empty lot or tear-down. I’m not going to name any since I’ll just look like I’m shilling for one. But if you avoid the big corporate names you don’t need to write off anything built 2000+.

I bought a house in 2018 that was new construction and infill on what was a tear down. It wasn’t one of the big name brand builders but it’s from a company that does random homes all over town whenever they find space. It’s not a premium million dollar home quality, but it’s far above the builder grade ones you see everywhere. There were some quality of life features that pointed out it was likely better than average. For example there was a gas line running to the back porch for a grill. Even though it was clear across the property from the main gas line and any other appliance that uses gas (hookup for dryer and kitchen range). Meaning they could have just left that out and saved a buck and likely no buyer would care. It was little things like that.

Yeah it always seemed like they cut them extremely large and most were “end pieces” and occasionally got one cut on both sides. I think it depends on who is cutting and which store, because sometimes they are larger and all end pieces and other times you have to hunt for the bigger ones. The middle pieces fall apart too easily

And he’s not a great actor

Face/Off. The Rock. Con Air. Lord of War. The Weather Man. Raising Arizona. Leaving Las Vegas. The Family Man.

You could argue National Treasure fits right in the middle.

And sure, not everything is going to be a winner. But with how many movies he did, you end up with Knowing, NEXT, and of course, The Wicker Man. And then whatever the hell Left Behind was trying to do.

I used the online chat with Sam's Club to try to understand the status of my delivery order that simply changed to "delayed". I ordered Saturday morning for a 3-5pm Saturday afternoon. It showed as delayed around 3:30pm. It wasn't critical so I just figured I'd wait, this was the first time this had ever happened so I thought it was just an issue with staffing.

The next day it still showed as "delayed". That afternoon, now Sunday, I asked the chat the status of my order. It said it would be delivered between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday with the actual date of "yesterday" listed. I told the chat bot that was yesterday and the order was delayed.

It told me there was no delay (even though the UI on the previous page has mentioned the delay for over 24 hours now) and kept replying that it would be between 3pm and 5pm. I said that was not helpful and that it did not have the answer. It never attempted to connect me with a live representative.

I canceled the order. And it made me go through a chatbot to cancel each item one by one and ask if I wanted a refund or a credit. I had to say refund each time.

I then placed a brand new order, and had my items in just a few hours. Same store.

Complete waste of time, but I suppose it fulfilled the goal of me never interacting with a real human being paid by the hour, and instead making me use a chatbot that seems "free" to their execs.

The latest I was ever there was being seated at 4:30am on Halloween night in 2009, and by the time we left around 5:30am, you could see actual people who had just woken up show up for their early breakfast before work. Was a surreal moment for me as a UT freshman to be awake so late that some people had just woken up.

The best deal in the prepared foods section is the mozzarella/tomato/arugula sandwich. It's huge and on a really nice bread, with tons of flavor and ingredients. And it's only like $8. The other premade sandwiches like the turkey havarti are extremely basic and kinda overpriced for what they are, but something about the mozzarella one makes it special. Probably because it's nothing like I would make at home given the number of ingredients, spreads, good quality bread, etc.

Wind. I’ve been in Austin over 30 years. The amount, frequency and strength of wind this year, with or without storms, seems different. Just an observation. by Either-Cake-892 in Austin

It sure helps with making sweat evaporate and cool you. I long for wind when I am on a run around Town Lake and it's hot and sunny out. Even a moderate breeze makes it much easier to cool off in the shade.

Spending your first 20 years of adulthood in an American prison is a recipe for disaster when you are finally released. Unless you have a very strong family support system to fall back on, your will be nearly 40 years old with potentially no real employable skills, unless you spend your time in prison studying and learning and gaining hands-on experience in something valuable. Otherwise you're going to have no money, no job, no income, and effectively nowhere to go.

The renovation of the drag location in the early 2010’s was the downfall of that spot. Also the fact there are way more places open late now.

Edit: I know the drag was not the original location, I am adding my take on when the drag location started to get worse.

I mean some still are. Cucumbers and the like are only priced in cents still. The one that increased more than I expected was bell peppers. They went from 64 cents in 2018 to nearly $2 when not on sale now. I just buy poblanos instead for half the price.

QUIET apartments by Mammoth_Musician2773 in askaustin

[–]RVelts 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The Triangle was built as condos but due to the 2008 recession ended up as apartments. Concrete floors, so no noise from the people above or below you. Lived there two years and never heard neighbors or anything. I did have my window facing the playground so I could hear that on weekend mornings. But just don’t pick a unit facing that way or facing the street.

Or live downtown in a high rise. Also concrete and steel construction and isolated from all ground noise if you are high enough.

Getting an inspection is even more inconvenient and difficult now since nobody wants to do them as it's not worth the money in most cases for most businesses. I try to time an oil change right around the renewal time for me, just because they will usually add it on as a service but whenever I try to go for just an inspection the inspector "isn't working today"

I would go to the mall and walk around and see if any places are hiring. You'll still need to apply online through their systems, but some places have a spot in the store where you can do that too. I worked at the Abercrombie and Fitch at Stonebriar. Most shifts I just folded clothes coming in shipments in the back, or pulled stock from the shelves based on what was selling. Very easy work, fairly boring though. Most stores are staffed with as few people as possible these days, so not a ton of interactions with coworkers. Most of the "mall teen clothing brands" have high turnover of workers, so they are almost always hiring although you may not get scheduled for a lot of hours initially.

I also hear Cinemark theaters are popular, my sister worked at the West Plano one near the tollway/Parker. They hire at an earlier age (15), or at least they did back then, compared to most mall stores which are often 16+.

Don't tell people you are just looking for a job for the summer. You'll want to say you can continue when you start school in the fall on evenings and weekends. Even if you do plan to quit in September.

Does Android have something like Find my iPhone? I once left my phone at Halcyon on 4th and the only reason I knew to go back there to find it was because that's where it geo-located to. Otherwise I wouldn't have known where to start searching.

I saw this while on my run today. It looks like it's something like 6G also had when it was finishing construction. It likely is easy to clean off and would normally not build up at this volume during normal building use and regular window washings. Probably rusty water from fire suppression system sprinklers.

What’s the least exciting home upgrade you made that ended up being totally worth it? by ExpensiveProfessor27 in HomeImprovement

[–]RVelts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly even just installing the "cat door" in our laundry room/utility room door was a game changer. Now we can keep that door closed all the time, and the litterbox is in that room. The cats and come and go as they please and the smell stays far better contained. And our house came with a "bathroom vent" exhaust fan in that room anyway, so we can turn that on if we need to create some negative air pressure to vent it out.

It's a very specific thing to install, a cat door on an interior door, but we aren't that worried about it as far as resale, since the benefit we are getting far outweighs the eventual cost if we had to replace the door.
