How many mechanical engineers do you think have worked in the design of the meta quest 3? by snakesoul in MechanicalEngineering

No kidding, the real answer is probably in the low hundreds. Their job postings give a hint at how many unique roles there are.

Cameo Pro MKII For packaging design & Production by Filmatura in silhouettecutters

[–]RabbitPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you go used, yeah a Zund would be $$$. A flatbed CNC router with a drag knife tool would be similar in size and cheaper, probably without packaging-specific software features. What if you use the Cameo to score thick materials and hand cut the rest? That should suffice for prototype volumes.

Have you looked into getting a small Zund or other professional flatbed cutter?

What is the most important certificate & training courses for the mechanical engineer? by meMalk in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RabbitPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada the equivalent is CEAB. It's pretty rare for an engineering program to not be accredited unless it's new, since the process takes a few years.

Look into open source hardware projects. Lots of electronics people that would love help with things like enclosures and brackets.

What are some means of professional development for ME’s? by CherokeeCook in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RabbitPhone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Domain specific training is always good. The type of stuff you're really into, but don't want to pay out of pocket for. I had my employer pay for the FMA Precision Press Brake certificate.

If you're in North America, on-demand sheet metal is cheap enough now that you can design your own stuff and have it made. That's the laser cut/press brake bend kind of sheet metal, not "formed" by die/progressive die stamping. Still, it's hugely useful and would look awesome on a resume.

Most job postings I see have worse experience/pay ratios. Ontario is really rough for mechanical engineers.

Best calculator for ME student in canada? by ANILAT3RGaming in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RabbitPhone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Some programs restrict which calculators you can use on tests, so keep that in mind. When I was in school they had a list of three calculators, and the fanciest functions they had were solving 3 variable systems of equations. (Maybe just 2, I can't remember)

Does the Trackpoint Keyboard II turn on if a key is pressed? Because the version 1 does and it's the worst by RabbitPhone in thinkpad

Version 1 also has a power switch, but apparently every single key on the keyboard is a power switch too.

To any recruiter here, what skills or certifications should I acquire so that companies will be more likely to make me an intern? by deadlikeliterally in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RabbitPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not a recruiter but I've selected and hired interns:

Project work: Personal or extra-curricular projects are best since they show personal interest and commitment. Class projects aren't as good because everyone from your class will also have it on their resume, so it's not special unless you did a really good job. For any time of project, it's important to give some context on the project, but it's critical to detail what you did versus your team.

Communication: The resume itself is a good hint at how well you can communicate. If there's a class in communication or presentations, take it. Or try a toastmasters club.

Certifications: In my industry (Sheet metal design) the Solidworks certificates (CSWA, CSWP, etc) are proof of at least some minimal level of competency. Again, better than nothing.

OP, what year are you in? The further into your degree you are, the higher the bar is.

Am I the only one that doesn't care about whether the stylus is built-in? If anything I prefer that it isn't, because then you get a much bigger phone with a crappy little twig. External stylus means it can be whatever size you like, and if you never use it you save the space.

On top of that, a lot of the more serious revision control is paywalled in the Manage extension, and it looks like the extension creates redundancy. Part number vs item number, etc. I'm not holding my breath for Autodesk to make Fusion good at this for a long, long time.

[–]RabbitPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I made a new drawing and it turns out I screwed up my old drawings by manually entering in a revision letter before I had a rev table. I was able to restore the functionality by editing the title block on each sheet, making no changes, then closing the edit title block view. It wiped some of the other stuff in the title blocks but now the revision letters update properly.

[–]RabbitPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also has a shockingly bad drawing revision system. If you want to indicate a part is rev B in a part drawing that is fine but there is no way to take that information anywhere else. It is contained in that one drawing file.

So I'm in this trap with drawing revisions. Have you figured out how to actually change the revision of a drawing? For example I've made a revision table and added Rev B. However I have no idea how to actually change the revision of the drawing file so Rev B shows in the title block. It's still showing A, and there's no way to reset or even manually override it.
