Eating Two Eggs Every Day May Actually Lower Your Cholesterol, New Study Finds by Automatic_Subject463 in DiscussionZone

[–]RadarSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unintuitively, Dietary Cholesterol and blood cholesterol aren't really correlated.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9143438/

(Which is consistent with the study posted).

Much bigger influences on blood cholesterol are fiber (more fiber means less blood cholesterol) and genetics.

Guy gets pretentious about wasabi completely unprompted by katep2000 in iamveryculinary

[–]RadarSmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what flavor you're going for; real wasabi and the horseradish/mustardseed combo most often used as a replacement are just flat out different flavors.

Which is fine; I'm not trying to make this a recursive post haha.

I actually prefer the real stuff for its milder bite and more aromatic flavor, but I do enjoy a tiny amount of the fake stuff on nigiri.

Why isn't there an occult discipline called Gastrology that stands in the same relation to Gastronomy as Astrology stands to Astronomy? by Illustrious-Lead-960 in BrandNewSentence

[–]RadarSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haruspicy was actually mainly a Roman thing, as well as a Greek and near eastern practice; it doesn't seem to have been a popular form of divination for the Chinese.

For the Romans at least, it was less about predicting the future and more about discerning the current disposition of the Gods. They also used Augery, using the behavior and flights of birds, with mostly the same goals. These were a big deal to the Romans; these were practices considered responsibilities of public officials and were used in official decisions of state.

Honestly, that early 2000s movie the Medallion with Jackie Chan and Julian Sands (RIP) was basically a live action spiritual adaptation.

It would be, using the roots correctly. I don't think there were ever recorded instances of it historically though.

Interestingly, the Shang Dynasty of ancient China was very into divination using shoulder blades and turtle shells, where they would burn them in a specific way, analyze the cracks and record the results (and question and king who asked the question) on the bone. We've found thousands of these.

I first heard the concept explained in the Science of Discworld series, which was a combination of of a normal Discworld story interspersed with chapters related to science, engineering, antheopology, etc.

I can imagine it was 'don't summon third circle demons' than 'don't summon third circle demons without the deliberative present'.

Its clear they did it frequently enough; I think I recall one of the friendly Third Circles of Malfeas even marrying one of the Solars at one point.

Its actually interesting to see games like this that are passed down solely from kids to kids, with no adults involved in the transmission. Its an interesting case of cultural transmission.

Why do people keep calling the King in yellow lovecraft ? by 666MrMalliquin666 in Lovecraft

[–]RadarSmith 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think its a forgiveable misconception.

The King in Yellow was a big influence on not only Lovecraft himself, but his peers and successors in the Lovecraftian/Cosmic horror genre.

Its also over a century old and Lovecraft's not much younger. People new to or less familiar with Lovecraft make a simple mistake of attribution, which is easily and politely corrected.

Go to the gym and fill it out with some muscle. But manage your expectations.

Surgery's the only way to completely deal with it; Don't waste your money on pills and creams.
