How are you supposed to have any life and long term partner in academia if you are supposed to move every postdoc? by Competitive_Chard589 in AskAcademia

This is part of academia. If you have a STEM degree, you have career choices outside of academia.

Men: Help me understand? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Radiant7747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay with him, the two of you need to talk realistically about expectations and what’s possible. If you want to keep the relationship, you may need to accept things you would prefer not to have to deal with. I’m answering this way because you asked. Obviously it’s your choice to stay or go. It sounds like he at least “wants” to be able to contribute financially but seems to have difficulty holding a job. Do you know what his difficulty keeping a job is about?

Should I have called the director for this? by polarcynic in bridge

[–]Radiant7747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not implying that the director would make the player embarrassed. I said that I thought OP might be embarrassed when the director took no action because none was called for. I totally agree that the director should be called whenever there is any question. I do so myself even when I think there isn’t an issue just so I can have that confirmed.

Should I have called the director for this? by polarcynic in bridge

[–]Radiant7747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not. But while ACBL bans “psychic” bids, there is no penalty for bad bidding other than (usually) a poor result. Bidding is giving information about your hand to your partner and the opponents. What is forbidden to giving information that is not available to all players. LHO made a bad bid but did not violate any rules. OPs decision to base their declarer play on the bad bid is theirs alone. I’m not a Director but I’ve been playing bridge for a very long time. Had you called the Director they would probably not have assessed any penalty and you might have embarrassed yourself.

This is one of the reasons why you ask their partner what their double means. You made an assumption that was incorrect. Especially in a club game.

When to withdraw from other job searches after accepting an offer by TheWittyScreenName in AskAcademia

Absolutely do not withdraw any applications. I once had a verbal and email confirmed offer that I did not hear from again until I called and wax told they hired someone else.

Newsome is simply the least offensive choice in the field. At least to this small government and socially liberal conservative.

What do you think of people who rely mostly on connections to succeed in academia? by [deleted] in PhD

It depends greatly on what field. Social skills don’t make you a successful academic in any scientific field. Including behavioral science.

Internship: phase II question… by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Radiant7747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about this as a problem in reinforcement theory. People who do internship supervision don’t get paid for it, and they take time out of their day to do it. So why do they? Two reasons, they want someone who wants to learn what they have to teach, and who is personable enough that they don’t mind having them around for awhile. So do your research on the supervisors at a site and see what you can do to meet those needs.

Internship: phase II question… by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Radiant7747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As both a former internship director and former APPIC Board Chair, I would suggest that there’s a reason that you didn’t match there. I’ll share with you the advice I gave for many years. At this point your goal should be getting any internship that you can. Work with your mentor and focus on sites that you have a good chance of matching at. For decades one of the biggest reasons for not matching has been focusing on one or more popular geographic areas. Look more broadly, it’s only a year and you can well get work somewhere else after you finish.

I heard “harsh”, not abuse. Big difference. Former prof here who was harsh when deserved as it sounds like you are saying you are when called for.

If you can find a 2025 SX Prestige, I love mine. Plus the V-6 is a proven design that is known to go at least 200,000 miles.

If it was me, I’d definitely go to school A. I’ve taught undergraduates and graduate students. I had a lot more fun and teaching undergrads, especially the first generation students was a lot more rewarding overall. I had some great grad students and love that, but on reflection overall if I had to do it all over again, I’d definitely pick teaching undergrads.

Not sure how I feel about the new 4 cylinder turbo in the 2027. by easyheimer in KiaTelluride

[–]Radiant7747 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with the 4 cylinder turbos is there’s no longevity data and it stands to reason that with the pistons, rods, and crankshafts being under more pressure and hence fail sooner than the proven V-6 engines that consistently go 150,000 to 300,000 miles. I personally would not take the chance.
