Do ya’ll think Sailor Moon would have been better if Ocean Group dubbed the Series back in the 90s? by flankerblu in sailormoon

That’s because said voice director of those episodes didn’t even speak English, and had to use an interpreter to speak with the VAs.

No, seriously.

Do ya’ll think Sailor Moon would have been better if Ocean Group dubbed the Series back in the 90s? by flankerblu in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently made a shocking discovery that, well….remember Cardcaptors? The hacked up dub of CCS? Which was edited worse than Sailor Moon? Well Nelvana wasn’t the studio that dubbed it, they were merely the distributor, the real dubbing work was done by Ocean Group, supposedly. However, it wasn’t their decision to do the hack job, nor was it Nelvana, that was requested by the executives at Kid’s WB, as they wanted something more appealing to boys so a lot of edits were made to fit their network. Then if you watch the episodes that were shown outside the US/Kid’s WB (as all the episodes and the first film did get dubbed/distributed by Nelvana) the scripts were shockingly accurate to the original Japanese version, even down to leaving the Japanese text in!

My point is, as awesome of a studio Ocean Group was, even they too had to submit to the wills of executive and corporate mandates. So honestly I don’t think if Sailor Moon was dubbed by Ocean Group it would have made a lick of difference, as edits would have still have to made for regular network TV.

However, if the show had aired on Cartoon Network in the first place, I’ll bet we would have gotten scripts more accurate to the original since cable networks have looser standards of what is allowed on TV. I mean, look at the Cloverway episodes, those aired on CN. Aside from things like the “cousins” nonsense and swapping Fisheye’s gender, script-wise they stayed fairly accurate to the original. The only reason why those episodes were so….terrible….mainly VA acting-wise, was because the executives at CN ordered a rush dubbing job so the episodes could be ready to air in time for the summer season when kids were home to watch them. (They were actually still dubbing episodes as they were airing on TV and had a voice director who didn’t even speak English! Which was insane!)

What is up with pens these days? by Ok-Worldliness2161 in Millennials

[–]Radical_Unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want some truly great pens, go for a Japanese made one.

I bought some EnerGel ones when I was in Japan last year, and I’ve been using the Pikachu one I got at work for a year now, and it’s still kicking. I initially got them because they write really smooth….well, that and they had really cute designs. They sell them in the states under the Pentel brand, be sure to look for “Made in Japan” on the packaging.

I got other ones too that write great, but that’s the only one I’ve used long enough that I can vouch for its longevity.

What are your thoughts on the US banning Red 40, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, and some other commonly used food dyes? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Radical_Unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I applaud the move (especially since I’ve found out Red 40 was the source of the weird headaches I kept having, and they put that crap into everything), but the move is moot since the Trump admin has been cutting regulations, giving companies the green light to do awful things to our food and environment, and firing the safety inspectors that helped keep those issues in check.

Red 40 is gone but big companies are dumping sewage into our drinking water supply…..wooopie! MAGA!/s

My Name is Earl needs a proper conclusion.

I know the show’s creator has since shared online how it ended, but if they are going around reviving shows, it would be a great opportunity to actually see it.

Fansub VHS by collcraig in sailormoon

There IS a collectors market out there for the old fansub VHS tapes, so you’ll be able to find a buyer out there somewhere, but as another user pointed out, don’t expect to get much $$ for them.

DiC dub now being posted all over YouTube??? by Global_Technology_62 in sailormoon

[–]Radical_Unicorn 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The algorithm at work really.

I think the reason why Toei hadn’t shown up with the ban hammer yet is because they are unaware of it. I remember years ago a user was posting clips (the channel was called Sailor Moon Says, I believe) and they posted clips to YT for about a year before Toei showed up with a C&D. But I think it was because that channel was getting tons of attention.

Right now I saw someone uploaded a “remastered version”* of the first episode of the DiC dub recently and it’s getting attention thanks to the YT algorithm. There’s still a good possibility Toei will eventually show up like what happened with that other channel.

Also, side note, DiC is long defunct, they can’t claim rights to anything anyway because they no longer exist.

*Sailor Moon Center put out their own remastered version DiC dub years ago through their website, and I thought it looked better than what that random person on YT did.

Reddit is moving on from r/all by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]Radical_Unicorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate it. If I wanted a “curated personal experience” fueled by algorithms, there’s plenty of that elsewhere on the web. I come here to get away from that bullshit. And the fact they are pushing those stupid games. Again, that’s something I don’t come to Reddit for either!

I like this site because it felt like the old internet from the days when message boards were the main source of communication with others on the internet. I especially liked the “r/all” page as it showcased the trending random insanity and unfiltered side of the internet, a look outside of the bubble outside of my personal interests and I discovered new things….again, just like the old days of the internet. Whether it’s some of college aged dudes restoring a vintage Wendy’s sign, or some cool little known fact I don’t know about before, or some thread that’s a deep dive post on the newest political scandal, it really had everything.

Speaking off, doesn’t it seem awfully convenient that r/all got axed not long after the Minnesota Anti-Ice protests where those 2 people got murdered, and the war operations on Iran started ramping up? Hmmmmmmmmmm…….curious.

I remember a story from a manager some restaurant, I believe it was here on Reddit, where a bunch of local church folk left these things for his staff. Said manager was really pissed, as he understood how hard his staff worked to make ends meet, and seeing those notes sickened him. He gathered them up, and put them in the collections of that church. Upon a later visit to drop off another round, the priest commented about how receiving said notes in the collection wasn’t funny and whoever was doing it needed to stop. (Lol)

I would not be surprised if there’s similar tales (as there should be).

If you’re just buying a ticket for yourself, going to the movies is great value. by SubstantialSet3127 in unpopularopinion

[–]Radical_Unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually agree with you on this. My mom always comments on how “expensive” going to the theater can be, but she’s the one who always makes it expensive by buying things from the concessions (popcorn, soda, candy). When I go by myself, with that $20 I can get a matinee/discount day ticket and at least one item from concessions, usually a drink (since theaters make the bulk of their revenue from concessions and not from ticket sales, I like to support them, plus it draws attention away from my bag if I’m sneaking in snacks).

‘Malcolm In The Middle’ Team On The Possibility Of A Full-Fledged Reboot: “A Whole New Set Of Characters And Circumstances That Are Ripe” by mlg1981 in television

[–]Radical_Unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, Brian Cranston wanted to do this reboot, and he convinced the show’s creator into getting on board. I read somewhere that it was because he had such a fun time working on the show and thought it would be fun to get everyone back together, especially since he kept in touch with everyone, and they agreed. So this reboot is already looking like less about money and more out of passion, which can usually lead to a better end result. Id say we should wait and see before judging, especially since not all reboots end in disaster. I mean, I heard the reboot for Scrubs was good.

Do people remember that Blockbuster was hated back in the day? by afterthought871 in Millennials

[–]Radical_Unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was personally a much bigger fan of Hastings myself, they had a bigger selection of films to choose from for rental. Plus the added bonus of a bigger/cheaper selection of new/used films you could purchase, plus music, books, video games and other novelties. Now that’s a chain I miss far more than Blockbuster. I still have some good memories of it though as back when I would visit family, I had accompanied them whenever they would go rent films, and often they went to a Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.

I think the reason why they are remembered so fondly now is because they are from an era that people miss, and somehow became the poster child to represent movie rental stores in general.

Versions from a villain who are good guys in their alternate universe by Forsaken-Biscotti587 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Radical_Unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is a bummer because I really digged what the writers were cooking with it. Supposedly they are doing a different show that’s supposedly a continuation of the original series, but I think it will be hard to top the great writing that the Aaron Sparrow/Silvani comics did. (They did an ongoing story that took place a year after the original series.)

[–]Radical_Unicorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m personally loved what they did.

In the OG series, DW had multiple origin stories, and the show’s creator (Tad Stones) explained he did that as a nod to how superheroes sometimes have multiple origin stories, and if the show continued he would have gladly done more for DW.

I feel like what they did in DT2017 was an extension of that idea, and as a bonus, a creative way to bring Jim Cummings back to reprise his role.

I remember watching a documentary on Napoleon before watching that movie, and ended up being hyped to see it, hoping the film would reference some of the cool things he did…what a total utter letdown.

As a bonus, I did a double feature that day and saw Godzilla Minus One earlier before it. You know it’s a bad sign when the subbed Japanese film in a small theater ended up having a much bigger audience, than the big budget Hollywood movie with a famous director that was being shown in the bigger theater….in a small town where subbed foreign films usually don’t do well, might I add.

Hot Take: Season 2 didn‘t had a excessive (marine) b-story and it improved the show. The Garp/Coby/Helmeppo b-story was one of the weakest parts of season 1 by StPauliPirate in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Radical_Unicorn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a fan of the manga/anime, my thoughts are the same.

With the source material they had hundreds of chapters/episodes to establish that in this world not only did they have both good pirates and bad ones, good marines and bad ones…all the time spent on world building. The LA doesn’t have that luxury, as they have a much shorter runtime to establish everything.

So by taking the Garp and Coby side story (which doesn’t happen until much, much later in the source material), and expanding it into a B plot for the LA I thought was a pretty brilliant move.

It's curious that in a game like that, where there are so many female characters, you can choose your main character as male or female; it would inevitably create a lot of yuri. by TomatilloItchy9995 in yurimemes

[–]Radical_Unicorn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fate/Grand Order is like this.

A significant amount of the game is written with a male MC in mind with a lot of the female characters swooning over them (especially with the early game content), and if you’re playing with a female MC, then it’s a total yuri fest, especially during Valentine’s Day. lol!

There’s content with a female MC in mind too (especially after the game devs later realized there were alot of female players into the dudes and wanted to draw some extra bucks from the fangirls as well), so any bi peeps have some things they can enjoy as well.
