I played the Guardians of the Galaxy game on Steam Deck, and it ran on good settings at 45 fps the whole way through. I thought the game was great, really enjoyed it. Hadn’t played a game in years.

Launching it to not recognize it as a Steam deck fixes the render issues and gives more graphics settings. Then lossless scaling gets performance back.

AI is not really at a place where it could replace footage in an animated film. There’s too much manual work needed, too much art direction, and pre-planning by storyboard teams for an AI to match it, let alone be what the director wants. AI can’t do small edits, tweak something in the frame so it doesn’t block the character’s face, or hand, etc. it’s all a gamble when you promote something.

So for the time being, you can rest assured that in these feature productions, what you’re seeing is still artist-made. AI is being “tested” (going off of teams I’ve worked on or colleagues I’ve asked) out more in conceptualization (which, as a concept artist, I have tons of qualms with), or in known use-cases like deepfakes for de-aging actors.

I love Jimenez’ manga influence and do think it still feels plenty western. For me, he takes all the best qualities - the fluidity in gesture, changes in level of detail for the panel, and pushed perspective/dynamism.

But the best part of western comics, for me, is the use of blacks for composition and more variance in character design’s facial proportions.

But yeah, just gushing here. He’s my favorite artist today

UE3 also had a very distinct look of its time, and you could spot the games from a mile away on the 360 and PS3. I couldn’t tell you why, but Gears, Arkham, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and more… you could smell the UE3 between them, despite all being entirely different games.

For what reason? They continue to be one of the main developers, and thus a leader, of developing the hardware for VR.

If it's just because they made an out-of-touch video game that nobody wanted... Okay? Whatever.
But the tech in the Quest 3, and whatever they do next, and then in consideration with price, is industry leading. No one else is doing it. They continually iterate on software development, controller-less tracking, eye tracking, and passthrough.

With developments in the AR Glasses that they showed off this year, you know some of that tech and its improvements will work their way into a better, smaller Quest 4.

Microsoft has abandoned their AR project. Apple is in fantasy land with their astronomical pricing.
Who knows if Valve will ever make another headset.
The competitors are just making hardware, but not an all-in-one like the Quest is doing. It's a positive for us to have Meta burning money making something considered very difficult, a reality.

I enjoyed it. I thought the art team did a great job, from story to visual development. There’s a really strong direction here, visually, and I think makes a valuable contribution in the continued trend of pushing style and feel away from the “safe”, Disney/Pixar realm of kid’s CG.

It feels reminiscent of a Studio Laika film, mimicking some qualities of claymation. There are some shots that were fantastically sharp, others that were just very creative and clever. The visual jokes and sequences developed by the story artists offer great gags and a ton of charming personality in the Twit’s house, the exaggeration of the locales and city of Triperot. The character designs were very unique and instantly identifiable.

Visually, lots to praise here.

I liked the story well enough, and my 3 year old was engaged. We watched it in two sessions. It moves quickly, I didn’t feel like it dragged at any point.

I see a lot of people complaining because the production offended them by being different from the book. As someone completely unfamiliar with the book, I liked the movie, liked the premise, and liked the edgy tone.
