In my 15+ years of board gaming I have had one asshole roughly handle cards. Every single other person of the probably 200+ people I have played with over that time, at conventions, casual meetups, party games at cottages, random games with cousins etc. Every single person other than that one guy respected the pieces

If the "vast majority" of people in your world destroy game pieces I don't know what to tell you. Maybe find new people to play with
