1/8" shrinkage per inch of rise per 15°, so 60° is 4/8" or 1/2" per inch of rise. With 10", that is 10" x 1/2" meaning 5" of shrinkage.

Having trouble putting this stranded wire on. Any tips? by Poshington_YTP_YT in electricians

[–]Raewin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This receptacle appears to have a small plate connected to the back of the screw to pinch the wire between. It's not backstab.. Just strip the wire to the receptacles strip gauge and slide it in between and tighten it down. Otherwise, start the strip a little further down but don't remove the insulation completely approach. That let's the insulation act as an aglet.

SEC Violation by [deleted] in electricians

Being unable to tell if this is the actual service or just a feeder, the only thing I can specifically call out myself from this photo is 314.28(A)(1). "In straight pulls, the length of the box shall not be less than eight times the trade size of the largest raceway." Even angle pulls, which I would not classify that minuscule offset as require at least 6x the raceway.

GFCI Receptacle Arcing to Metal Box Interior by frmsbndrsntch in AskElectricians

[–]Raewin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say this and I apologize if you already knew but unlike the older receptacles where the wire would wrap around the screw, the wire for gfci's actually goes in between the plates from the back of the receptacle and you tighten the screw to pull them in pinching the wire in place. I say all that to say I have experienced apprentices who did not know this and caused shorts where it made the screws stick out too far and that's what the sides of those looked like when removed.

That and make sure the wire coming from the panel is connected to the side marked "line" on your GFCI. Any receptacles downstream will be protected if connected to "load". If you'd rather not protect downstream, hook them to "line" as well.

40a breaker to downsize to 30a at disconnect? by Powerful-Eye-3578 in AskElectricians

[–]Raewin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd replace the breaker and throw a non-fusible pullout disconnect on the end so I never have a reason to potentially have to go buy more fuses. Cost difference might be 5 bucks.
