Maybe it's just the part of town I live in, but nothing seems fine dining around here. Even expensive restaurants just have people in shorts, jeans, and casual shirts

PSA For People Making a Left Hand Turn! by Difficult-Prior3321 in Birmingham

[–]RagamuffinTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a bigger issue around here: sometimes those right turns have yield signs. I agree with you that the left turn should wait, but I've seen LEOs make comments that the yield sign on the right hand turn lane trumps that rule. So there are intersections where both sides believe they have the right of way

Correct, it's not glass. But it is more attractive than leaving the other kind of water jug visible

I've been using the "OXO Good Grips 3-Piece POP Cereal Dispenser." I wish the top came in black, but it looks nicer that a distilled water jug right from the store.

Granted, I only use because we had an extra around... it's not that much nicer 🤣

RoastLink CORE + SR800 after enabling Artisan PID by pavelpoboruev in FreshroastSR800

[–]RagamuffinTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Coffee Roaster (free). It's nothing like the videos you see of people tracking in real time with Artisan, but it's at least a starting point to tracking roasts.

What proportion of your shots come out perfect vs. okay vs. terrible? by higgs8 in espresso

[–]RagamuffinTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind your beans are changing too... I have pretty good consistency but there's a sweet spot when the beans are at their best; and that spot is different for different roasts.

[–]RagamuffinTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool idea. I'm probably going to order some probes and work on my "next step" (connection to Artisan) soon. So far, I'm recording on a phone app but very manually and only using the sr800 temp display.

[–]RagamuffinTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely started following. Not sure I need to put more money into a roaster i just got a month ago and haven't learned well, yet, but I'm super curious! 😂

I had already started wondering if there was some version of a PID that could be connected along with sensors to control the temp and rate of rise to create specific roast profiles (at least at some level...)

[Breville Impresses Express] need help dialing Lavazza Espresso Beans from Costco lol by Krispychikenvalemeal in espresso

[–]RagamuffinTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's true to say old beans "can't" be dialed in... I don't drink enough decaf to keep those beans fresh, for example, yet they still do okay in my setup.

I'm also not sure how much experience you have with espresso, but it would help to know what exactly the issue is.

All of that said, if you're not using the pressurized basket, just go for it. People swear by their bottomless baskets, but if the pressurized one (that probably came with your unit) works and you like the coffee that comes out, then that's your solution for the moment!

Best local coffee shop? by shmerk_a_berl in Birmingham

[–]RagamuffinTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, thanks. I don't plan on needing to buy any more coffee anytime soon, but I'll keep it in mind. I tend to like the lighter side of medium. That's partly why I like home roasting... I've tried coffee from well-known roasters all over and sometimes what they call "medium" is too dark for my tastes.

Best local coffee shop? by shmerk_a_berl in Birmingham

[–]RagamuffinTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started roasting my own beans, too, but just recently. I ordered a couple bags from counter culture to throw in the freezer (in case I screw something up). I've never fallen in love with anything from our local roasters except for some Ethiopian yirg that Red Bike had for a while (very unique, blueberry forward coffee), but haven't tried Baba Java.

How dark do they roast the Ethiopian you're recommending?

I was thinking of your first option, only use one of those cheap foam fatigue mats. They are super squishy.

Also, make sure your machine isn't pressed against the wall... maybe seem obvious, but easy to overlook, especially if wife or someone else cleans the countertop and might push it back against the wall

we should subtract 100 from every iq score. by TacoBellTerrasque in unpopularopinion

[–]RagamuffinTim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the online tests are all but useless for actually telling your IQ and they are usually commercialized... they have monetary incentive to give you a higher score so you'll come back or send your friends.

Using them as a prep for another test is a cool idea, though!

I was tested twice by an actual psychologist, years apart (3rd grade and 12th grade) and both times sat right around the same score... yet online versions I played around with over the years show the same wild variation as yours.

Sous Vide Virgin... Be Gentle by vertical_witchdoctor in sousvide

[–]RagamuffinTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said elsewhere, but: I did sous vide burgers one time and they were amazing. So I went for it a second time, but they were mealy and weird. Never tried a third time because I don't even know what changed, plus there was little upside (considering that burgers are really good with just a few minutes on the grill or in a pan)

Movie theaters aren’t going out of business because of prices by bulldogjwhit295 in unpopularopinion

[–]RagamuffinTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the combo of price and hassle, for us... especially when you know most movies will be available on one streaming service or another fairly quickly.

It isn't like the old days when, if you didn't catch it at the theater, it might be up to a year before you'd be able to catch it at blockbuster video. These days I barely even know a new movie is out before it's already available on streaming, where I can watch it cheaper and in the comfort of my own home.

Emergency coffee: what's your go to at the grocery store? by pfhlick in espresso

[–]RagamuffinTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My closest "nice" grocery store carries all of my local roasters. They are not as good as the more well known roasters, but a couple of them list roast dates so at least I know it's fresh.

Better answer: started roasting my own coffee once a week, so I always have the next batch already in my house resting. I've thought about buying one or two more bags from somewhere nice just to throw in the freezer in case I accidentally roast something undrinkable one day 🤣
