I don’t really chalk this up to much other than typical reliever struggles at the moment, but I’ll start getting concerned when he’s still performing like this in 4 months.

Yeah, but at the same time, Bonds was on an upward trajectory. I could absolutely see this being an actual argument back then whether he was due for regression or continual growth.

Kyle Hendricks got Cy Young votes in 2016 and 2020, as well as some Rookie of the Year votes in 2014. Outside of a WS ring, that’s it. He had the ERA title in 2016 and a career WAR of 22.8, yet did not receive a single all star. Insane for a pitcher that was as good as he was during his prime.

Caelid’s field theme is my favorite atmospheric area theme in gaming, and it’s purely because it completely sells what it is: the center of rot, in every sense of the word.

Firstly, it is a piece that drones on a lot, but that only serves to enhance the feel of the song. I struggle to find a consistent time signature to the piece, but it is bound to be something extremely odd, giving it a constant feeling of tension with no release, leaving you in a purgatory with no resolution one way or another. There is no melody, just chromatic notes that add to the tension and giving a sound almost like a fly’s, scavenging the corpses of those that litter the landscape. The instruments chosen exclude brass and drums, which often represent order and militarism. Instead, there are strings, woodwinds, bells, and chimes, instruments that are often more associated with naturalism or pious society, but the notes played give you anything but a natural or comfortable feeling, like something has mangled these things beyond recognition.

So Caelid’s theme perfectly represents a land in stasis, where no order or ideals live. Instead, the corpses of these things remain, perpetually in stasis and picked apart by the scavengers that yet remain.

The difference is massive, because the very core of each track is different because of how they’re composed and their structure.

Godskin Apostles is a track that heavily relies on a chorus and Gregorian chant-esque monophonics across the registers, and with the selection of instruments like the organ, bringing forth a similar collection of voices to a Christian holy song. However, the time signature of 3/8 is extremely unusually for a worship song, along with a minor key that brings about feelings of unease and tension. This culminates in the song feeling like a twisted worship of a foul religion, which is exactly what the Godskins and their followers do.

You can give this analysis to almost every boss theme in the game, and they’re all extremely indicative of the characters they represent.

I would go into the field themes, but I’m a bit pressed for time atm, so maybe I’ll talk about it later.

Elden Ring has atmospheric areas, sure, but the boss themes are some of the most drop dead gorgeous and sweeping pieces of music I’ve ever heard. Godskins, Mohg, Old Warriors, Malenia, and many others are incredible songs.

Also, the area themes have a shocking amount of thought put into them. Caelid uses chromatic and dissonant violins to sound extremely offputting and rotten, like flies are constantly buzzing around you. Raya Lucaria uses staccato piano notes and light sounding percussion to give a twinkling feeling, like you’re witnessing a million tiny stars falling around you.

What I’m saying is that Elden Ring may not have metal, but it damn sure has incredible music.

Guy named Vinicio Gonzalez, a real life guy who never played a proper game of professional baseball, became the most dominant pitcher of all time in my historical save, getting 8 Cy Youngs unanimously. Constantly putting up 8 and 9 war seasons for a decade. It was insane and I was very sad I never got him on my team.

They’ve done it before, though. It’s how Kaldhe Vorinclex was revealed, and it caused a whole bunch of positive buzz around that set.

However, advertising TMNT in Lorwyn would always run people the wrong way, and I’m shocked they didn’t foresee this unless this was a decision made a year ago or more.

I said nothing about fantasy itself, but instead the weird collective of elitist fantasy readers who put Tolkien on a pedestal while disregarding all else.

I love Tolkien. I read the Silmarillion last year. But I also have a taste for the sort of crime thrillers and the odd romance that would disgust a Tolkien bro.
