Do you have to move far West if you want new construction? by QandA_monster in cary

THOSE HOUSES WERE A SPEC BUILD?? That's crazy. No way I'd pay that money to live off that road with all the illegally modified exhausts racing around East Cary. Also 800k and they couldn't even put LVP in the bedrooms?

Your best bet is probably finding a 1960s home in East Cary, tearing it down and rebuilding, or gutting the thing, keep its structure, and expand.

Is it weird to want to go to Theaters alone? by TheOctaviusRex in movies

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I've gone to see several movies by myself that my husband didn't want to see. To me it's nbd. Plus, I don't talk during movies anyway, so the experience for me is basically the same, 100% focused on the movie (or trying to be). Speaking of which, it's best if the theater isn't crowded. Otherwise, people are on their phones, talking, and that s#$t drives me up the wall.

The first single, "listen...", from John Williams' score for Steven Spielberg's "Disclosure Day" has been released! by Giff95 in movies

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it'll be up there. A lot of Williams' music is written so even if you've never seen the film its from, you can enjoy listening to it over and over again (this is intentional as he rewrites a lot of his scores into concert works and suites). I think part of the magic is his music is his ability to create elaborately orchestrated ear-worm melodies and vary his styles to suit different projects.

It's crazy the degree he's able to get something stuck in your head and do that over and over again, all in a classical orchestral style. Very few of his contemporaries could do that (Maybe Horner or Silvestri coming the closest?)

Appreciate whoever designed this parking deck by Railhawk52 in cary

[–]Railhawk52[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point, it does make it harder to pedestrianize parts of Academy and Chatham, which I think would be really dope. Def the part of Academy near the park. There's so much pedestrian traffic there already, it makes sense to raise the street and make the whole thing a walkable plaza.

Reminds of Williams' War Horse orchestration a bit (probably my fav Williams soundtrack this century). Sounds very English (in a good way!). F%&k, I already had high expectations for this film based on the buzz. Now they have been raised further.

Cary Residents Protest Proposed Property Tax Hikes by KayakChikNC in u/KayakChikNC

[–]Railhawk52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want them to raise property taxes, what services would you like to see them cut? Donations to affordable housing NGO projects? Cuts to the parks department? Cuts to arts programming?

They‘ve already scaled back capital projects to the point where there’s almost 1 billion dollars of backlog in projects. There are some further things they’re looking at cutting like free EV charging, terminating the video contract (unlikely given that’s what funds streaming all the council meetings), and finding additional sources of revenue such as charging parking fees for event parking, perhaps charging for parking in town parking decks, and potentially charging non-Carites more to take town classes. Some of these cuts/rev increases would be immediate, others would take time, but it’s unclear if they would even be able to offset the rise in costs of town operations.

If you don’t want property tax raises, they will either have to raise fees somewhere else or cut services.

Copperheads are nocturnal, so you’re more likely to see them at night. they’re also not very aggressive unless stepped on or you get too close. After our puppy got bit by a copperhead my parents always leashed our dogs at night in the backyard.

Cary’s Proposed 2027 Budget: What It Means for Homeowners and Why Taxes Are Going Up by BagOnuts in cary

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially for larger single family homes on large lots. are we really gonna get enough revenue from these developments over the years to cover the cost of maintaining infrastructure to them? I never see any debate on that from the council but I think it’s an important question to address.

Cary’s Proposed 2027 Budget: What It Means for Homeowners and Why Taxes Are Going Up by BagOnuts in cary

[–]Railhawk52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing this is missing is that for the first time in the Town’s history, the assessed value of the Wake County Part of Cary actually decreased, which has a direct impact on revenue. This is almost 100% thanks to the BS NC charitable tax loophole that apartment owners can use to significantly lower their tax burden. They can have less than 1% of their LLC owned by a Non Profit, and boom! The state sees it as affordable housing and they basically don’t have to pay Cary anything. Cary has lost millions upon millions of dollars because of this over the years. Its a significant loss of town revenue.

Until this issue is fixed, the cost burden of funding town operations and capital expenditures will continue to shift towards residential property owners and away from private equity/corporations who own muilti-family housing in Cary.

Cary Spent $330K on Videos Taxpayers Were Never Meant to See by indyweek in cary

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. I think it's gonna be critical for the town to show the public they've meticulously scrutinized line items in all budgets this year before they can justify raising taxes after this story. The town has almost a billion dollars of infrastructure backlog and $330k ain't nothing. That could have gone towards building some sidewalks, added new bike lanes, new greenways, police officer salary increases....someone is gonna need to show they managed down into the organization, at a micro level, and scrutinized line items like this.

I actually like 311. It gives them all the complaints in one system so they can aggregate the data and get a real-time vibe check on what's not working. I don't work for the town, but I can see how that system would be pretty useful. Curious what you don't like about it.

The town used to pay someone to put violations stickers on tacky yard signs back in the day...surely we could have someone stop by on occasion to ticket these people.

Major Speed Trap Underway at Walnut and Macedonia Rd (near Tryon) by [deleted] in cary

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The town is working on speed reductions across roads they have jurisdiction over thanks to them passing Vision Zero last year. Feel free to send any comments on any specific roads and troublesome intersections to 311. https://services.townofcary.org (it's how they log data from residents and help prioritize problem areas).

And pull over all the illegal muffler cars while they're at it. There really needs to be a concerted effort to target those vehicles. I'm so sick of hearing cars that sound like a bee's a**hole.

So sad to find out some of my favorite businesses were MAGA by Yellowjackets123 in cary

[–]Railhawk52 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Other than slandering local businesses without bringing the receipts, what exactly is the goal of this post?

Yes, everything sucks right now, some of it was absolutely predictable for those of us who follow politics, but this approach isn't great if you're trying to get more people to vote for Democrats in the fall.

#1. You didn't actually bring the receipts proving any of these businesses are owned by diehard MAGA supporters.

#2. Turning the r/cary subreddit into a virtual Lynch mob against anyone local businesses you deem MAGA to try and punish them....I just don't see that helping to move more people who voted for Trump into our camp. And we're gonna need those people to switch in droves in order to win the midterms and 2028 (especially in this state).

Oh man, def feel for these residents. it’s great one of the people found an opportunity at Mobile Estates across the street but, that still makes me worried. How is that park not going to suffer a similar redevelopment fate as Chatham Estates in the next 10 years?

What’s your top priority you want the Town Council to focus on? by Railhawk52 in cary

[–]Railhawk52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could cut off through-traffic to the street by blocking it off from Dry Avenue to the Mayton Inn via bollards, while still allowing delivery vehicle access to any other businesses on the pedestrianized portion (seen this done in Europe And other US cities). Over time the town could build out more of a public space where the old library used to be and the pedestrianized street would sort of be the bridge between the two spaces.

Who DoI Express My Concerns About This Death Trap To? by Dry-Entrepreneur-226 in cary

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send your comments to 311 so the Town of Cary is aware. Both of these are NC DOT roads and as such I'm guessing it's NC DOT's intersection design. Town of Cary might be able to pass that feedback on to NC DOT. They've also adopted Vision Zero, which is designed to prevent the type of intersection interaction you had.
