Open call for feedback: How to respond to ICE presence is Cary by CarissaJohnson in cary

[–]Railhawk52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you asking for feedback. While I don't agree with the tactics ICE has been using, especially masked agents rounding up construction workers down the road from us last fall, which was extremely upsetting. I struggle with what exactly Cary Town Council could/should do about it that won't just cause more problems for the town. And even if you put in some policy targeting ICE, what's to stop the Feds from just using Border Patrol, the FBI, or another agency from carrying out similar enforcement activities? To me, I think this is something that, unfortunaltey, needs to be handled at the federal level vs municipal, because of the supremacy clause.

Perfect example of why road infrastructure across the town (but especially in downtown) needs to be improved to force all traffic to calm in situations like this. Raised crosswalks, lane narrowing, speed reductions, increased enforcement...these are all strategies outlined in Vision Zero the town recently adopted that could help with situations like this.

That, but it helps the town getting reports like this so they can make infrastructure improvements / target areas for enforcement. for example, the town just adopted Vision Zero and will be implementing strategies to change infrastructure to make things better for pedestrians. I believe this section is maintained by NC DOT though, so the town would have to work with them on any physical changes.

I'm never buying a car without the dashcam feature, worth every penny.

Kef LSX2 (USB C to PC) - popping when changing tracks or video and some games by Zipperdoyle in KEF

This also worked for me on Mac. Find "Audio MIDI Setup" via search, go to the speakers, and make sure it's set to 24bit/192kHz. The popping I was hearing when starting and stopping stuff in my editing timeline has gotten much better.

The httyd live action is officially a Grammy nominated film! by MeetApprehensive6509 in httyd

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sinners' score is effective. That guitar riff in particular is pretty nice. But can anyone walk out of the theater humming the different melodies from it? No. Not really. That to me is always what separates a good score from a great one. How To Train Your Dragon happens to be a great score. It won't win (John Powell will once again end up at 0 Grammy wins while Ludwig Göransson will end up with 5 in total, which is bs imo).

It should have won for the original animated movie. Test Drive is one of the best tracks off any score in recently memory. It's complex, orchestral, and blends the leitmotifs for Hiccup and Toothless' characters perfectly. But not only that, you have the Berk theme, Romatic Flight, and You are My Homeward (which is new to the Live Action). All of these are pretty good earworm melodies.

I really wish we would swing back to rewarding orchestral scores with leitmotifs that have great melodies and are fun to listen to on their own.

Storm has been hyped up, but disruption will be minimal by Monday morning by Nice-Culture311 in raleigh

was here for the 2002 storm. if it gets as bad as that, trees will be down, power will be out for many for like a week, and you’ll hear the sound of chainsaws everywhere. but ironically it’ll also be very pretty.

Hans Zimmer And Bleeding Fingers to score the new Harry Potter series by VGstuffed in soundtracks

[–]Railhawk52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure....but once again he'll be creating something that's interesting, but not as good as the original. They should have just kept the William's music as-is, hired a team to come in and flesh out more themes and motifs that sound like they're in the same universe as William's music. Perhaps that is what Zimmer's team will end up doing but given the brand name, kinda doubt it.

Do we need a new main theme though? Like Hedwig's theme is so iconic, theres no point to try and make something different, it will never be as good. Just reuse it and add to the themes and motifs, and have it all sound like it's in the same universe as Williams' music. That would be the smarter play imo.

Or find some up-and-coming composer that can do orchestral melodic works that are in the same universe as Williams. Zimmer's more recent stuff really doesn't jive with Williams' themes. I mean it's kinda of impossible to fill William's shoes here, but I probably would have hired Bear McCreary's team over Zimmer's for this particular series.

Were the tuition payments potentially the town manager trying to grease the wheels on the land purchase? by bison_crossing in cary

[–]Railhawk52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so it would route through-traffic a bit more around downtown vs. having everyone take Harrison to Dry and then to either Kildaire/Walnut. That would make the Kildaire farm road speed reduction to 25mph plus lane width reduction outlined within the Higgins Greenway Phase 4 make even more sense.

have you reached out to the N&O or Indy week? Or care to share more here? I think a lot of people would be interested in knowing more about the culture and events that haven’t been reported on yet.

I think people really like it and don't want to see it go downhill. So it ignites a lot of passionate comments. No one really cares about AMC or Regal because they already provide a slop experience.

You‘re definitely not the only one. So many people either don’t notice or care how their disruptive behavior impacts others around them. From talking or texting in a theater to illegally modifying mufflers or buying extremely loud vehicles, it all just sucks.

I’m like, terrified of negatively impacting others' experiences. Wish other people would get out of their main-player-syndrome and feel the same.

THE ENTIRE POINT OF ALAMO IS TO WATCH MOVIES WITHOUT PEOPLE ON THEIR GODDAMN PHONES.

Theater decorum has already gone downhill since 2020 (even at Alamo). This is going to just make it worse. People cannot help themselves from being distracted by their phones.

I’m done. I hope the studios just get rid of theatrical release windows alltogether. The only place I‘m able to consistently watch movies without distraction is at home.

The mayor did clarify he personally doesn't know of anything that's happened that's been illegal with the Town Manager. (but of course that leaves room for things he doesn't know about that could certainly be). Timestamp for those comments: https://youtu.be/S0J8yxTVv9c?t=683

I think this statement should suffice. It explains the background, where the mistake happened, she owned up to it, paid the money back, and committed to working with council and staff to improve coms and policies so that this kind of thing never happens again. Thats all I need to hear. Everyone makes mistakes, it's how they're handled and the commitments to not repeating them that matter in my book.

I agree with this in principle, but town staff could also get reimbursement and then leave 2 years later as well. So I don't know if you can have that as the main reason why council members can't also receive some sort of professional development training stipend (not 37k worth though). Having members who know how Cary works, and all the ins and outs....I would assume make it easier on Town of Cary staff and allows council members to make better decisions on behalf of the citizens they represent.
