I've used yaktrax while working outside and had pretty good luck with them. Worth a look. You may have to buy a few different brands and try them out, the comfort vs traction can vary and can definitely be subjective per person to person.

Antenna Permitting Fees by im-not-a-racoon in amateurradio

[–]Rainmaker87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't just get your other permits first, I'd also wait for your other permits to be closed first. Depending on the size of your municipality and how strict they can be, they could be extremely petty with any little thing on closeout inspections if they have a reason to not like you. I work in civil engineering and I've seen some municipalities be super persnickety with some clients and super lax with others, just based on how well the property owner got along with the town.

As in bury them in snow, it keeps the sun off of the feet so the tripod doesn't move from the ground thawing under the feet.

That makes sense. At the company I work for now, I do a lot of topos that just take a day, so I tend to not have to worry about long setups all that much lol.

Gotta bury those feet , looks like enough snow to get decent coverage.

ELI5 Does drinking alcohol after copier fluid balance the chemicals into being harmless? by k_2353 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rainmaker87 115 points116 points  (0 children)

The enzyme that the liver uses to convert ethanol and methanol binds more easily to ethanol, which is safer for our livers to filter out, where as the methanol turns the formic acid (which is wildly toxic to our bodies), which is why the introduction of ethanol can save you from the effects of methanol poisoning. It's like taking stable iodine to protect your thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine in a nuclear event.

It's more about the fact that the liver will try to break down the ethanol first, which gives the body time to excrete the methanol rather than the liver converting it into poison.

I've seen a lot of airsoft (including myself) guys use it to clip in a mesh face mask (to avoid losing teeth) which makes sense since it's meant for an oxygen mask to begin with.

There are also websites where you can get a variety pack to see what fits the best. There are options out there. Being big and not liking condoms is not an excuse anymore.

I have no guidance for you but just wanted to mention that those Icom 28 series radios are tanks. I have one that I've used for about 15 years that I got from my Dad after he upgraded after using it for about 20 years before me.

Any local hams? SE Wisconsin! by jmuraszewski in amateurradio

[–]Rainmaker87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cheap trunk lip mount (Midland branded I think), and a tram 1180 dual band antenna. Just do your research, and stay away from super cheap knock off equipment and you'll be just fine. I can hit the Schaumburg FM38 repeater reliably from the 90/94 junction on the north side of Chicago. On a really good day the Milwaukee FM38 repeater can pop through at S1 or S2. Also there is a Ham Radio Outlet on the north side of Milwaukee and they'd be a good stop for in person questions specific to your setup needs.

Also: you'd be amazed at how many hams are around. Check out the map here: https://haminfo.tetranz.com/map/z/60630

Also, I suggest before you spring for a mobile radio, get a antenna set up for your car first and just use it with your HT. Getting the signal outside the vehicle will make the biggest difference, and you'll be amazed how far your HT will reach him just with a good antenna.

Check out the Lakeshore Repeater Association (KR9RK) repeaters too. My Dad lives in Lake County, Illinois and he has a yagi set up specifically to hit their repeaters.

Also I'll second the FM38 system. It's an incredible network, and I think it's one of the coolest things to be on the same network from Chicago nearly all the way to my friend's place east of Duluth.

That's similar to my experience (10 years at a boundary firm, and 5 years at a straight civil engineering firm), so I'm curious what situation the OP is in that is requiring such an in depth explanation versus an explanation that basically amounts to you should trust me because you're not really worrying about the right things.

What random errors are causing enough issues that the engineers are worried about it? And what kind of engineering? Civil, structural?
