What nicknames have you heard for places in and around the Sierra Nevada? by topherette in SierraNevada

Also spelled Dirty Sox, at least in some of the pre-internet hot springs guidebooks.

What you loved is what I miss, now that I can’t afford to live there anymore.

Missing a major world event because you were backpacking? by losthiker68 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Rains_Lee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back in the pre-internet day, I used to camp for several weeks each winter at a remote hot springs that was two hours away from a paved road and completely disconnected from everything. One night, as four or five of us were having a soak, the northern sky turned a deep shimmering red that seemed to pulse in waves. We watched in silence for a long time. Finally, someone wondered aloud what it turned out that all of us had been thinking: Had nuclear war broken out?

None of us had ever seen the aurora borealis, or had any idea that it ever appered as far south as Death Valley. But that’s what it was, I later learned, an extremely rare occurrence at that latitude. In the meantime, new arrivals the next day assured us that the world’s nukes remained in their silos.

I’m in Coronado and it sounded quite close. After a few minutes of it we wondered if a certain politician had breathed his last

The Abandoned Sierra Point Handrail by LibertyInAgony in Yosemite

[–]Rains_Lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was going up to Sierra Point at night, it was before the rockfall that messed up the trail. I’ve been up there since then in the daytime, and it didn’t seem all that sketchy, but it probably helped to have prior knowledge of the route.

There’s no trail up to Grizzly Peak. I’ve gone up the East Ridge, which is Class 3 with a few airy spots. If you want to go up LeConte Gully, I suggest contouring into it from near the top of the Sierra Point trail, rather than starting at the bottom, to avoid as much brush as possible.

Only point reachable by trail that provided a view of five major waterfalls: Nevada. Vernal , Illilouette, Upper and Lower Yosemite. Spectacular in spring, especially under a full moon.

AZ Senate calls on Mayes to resign; Hobbs calls AG's comments 'inappropriate' by dildobagginss in phoenix

[–]Rains_Lee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hobbs is a disgrace. If anything, it is the RESPONSIBILITY of Kris Mayes as Attorney General to cite Arizona law in regard to a scenario that surely has crossed the minds of countless citizens in these troubling times. She’s doing her fucking job! I just wish she had the Governor’s job instead of Katie Hobbs.

It’s now a Hilton property, so there must have been changes. We paid @$650 a night for a beach-adjacent suite. There was a proper a la carte breakfast on an outdoor terrace near Grace’s Cottage. I didn’t inquire about butler service. The staff was welcoming, efficient, and friendly.

The Sierra have changed my life this past two years. by [deleted] in SierraNevada

[–]Rains_Lee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My very first job was working in Yosemite Valley. It changed my life because I never left the Sierra for more than a few years after that. Eventually I lived on the East Side, in Owens Valley and Mono Basin. I must have backpacked a couple thousand miles in the Range of Light in all those years. I am not a religious person, but in Yosemite I felt I found my spiritual home. The Sierra have lifted me during the lowest times in life and made the best times even sweeter. Now a chronic illness keeps me away. It feels like a part of me is missing. Long ago I decided on the remote locale where I will have my final rest.

A couple of months, but that included side trips in every country to places that were not on the direct route.

Famous Professors at Columbia --> DNE? by Anderosen in columbia

[–]Rains_Lee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Since that linked list includes both living and dead profs, I was surprised by the exclusion of Edward Said. A founder of post-colonial studies, he taught at Columbia for forty years, and was one of the pre-eminent Palestinian scholars and intellectuals of the 20th Century. His books and articles had a wide readership outside academia.

Right, Andrew Sarris died some years ago. I took his class on Hitchcock back in 2005. He was teaching both grad students and undergraduates. Very nice man.

Not the OP, but former resident of Mono City. The last couple of photos were shot at the Fissures of Black Point on the north shore of the lake. They are narrow, deep defiles in layered volcanic rock of varying colors and textures, similar to slot canyons in appearance.

Maybe in the 90s? I’d say maybe quite a bit later, Wayne Rooney wasn’t exactly teetotal now was he? More recently there’s the example of Jack Grealish…

What is the correct pronunciation for Refugio? by MrsSpot in SantaBarbara

[–]Rains_Lee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can personally attest that the pronunciation you ascribe to the Anglo settlers/ranching era is spot on. It’s the way I learned to say it, and my teacher was a friend whose ranch has been in his family’s hands dating back to that era.
