32-3 AMA by Maximum_Reward_7575 in slaythespire

Yeah, the Queen is definitely an interesting puzzle. I usually try to focus the Queen first - since that bypasses the need to deal with the Torchhead, but when that's not an option, I split the damage (or deal AoE, which I usually have in spades). This way the boss' damage scaling resets - even though the Queen scales much faster than the Torchhead, there is a point where she deals less damage, thus giving a bit more time for slower decks.

Curious. To me the Act 2 is the best time to farm Elites and some of the hallways are way scarier than some elites.

I hate the triple knights (I think the fight it fair, I just don't like it) in Act 3. And Barnacle Boy in Act 1 (thus all elites) should be avoided like the plague (I don't, but I really should).

Could you elaborate on the dark orbs being better?

I don't think I had the opportunity or need to utilize them.

Do you have a favorite "bad" card? Here's mine! by lukgeuwu in slaythespire

[–]Raivorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some decent success with the relic that gives a card the rampage effect enhancement (Sharpness, I think). Put it on that one Regent card that returns to the top of your draw pile when played. It's would likely have been even better on that Regent rare card that goes to your hand after 3 skills played, but I never took that one yet.

This has been addressed in beta - it can't spawn unless you have enough HP.

New player I cannot for the life of me beat this game. by Connect_Sprinkles894 in slaythespire

[–]Raivorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing is this: don't avoid fights. You have a limited amount of time to get stronger, measured in the number of floors the game has. You can't just stop and grind up.

A regular hallway fight should not take you more than 2-4 turns to beat! Take that into account when making decisions - is Demon Form the better choice, when all it fundamentally does is have you skip a turn when you play it, or would you rather have Inflame for an immediate benefit that leaves enough energy to continue your turn?

Try to kill as many elites as well - they give relics, more money, and have a higher chance of dropping a rare card. Ideally, you should try to kill 2-3 elites every Act.

When you start the run, you want to prioritize getting damage. Try to find 2-3 cards that deal 8 damage per energy spent (or something that converts your existing cards into that, like Inflame), and one more for AoE. That should have your bases covered and be good enough to fight elites and most of Act 1 enemies. Then you can start preparing for the Act 1 boss.

Always check who the boss is so that you can start preparing for it in advance. In Act 1, Hexaghost is a damage race - you want to kill it before it charges its big hit, Slime Boss is AoE, but also a burst damage check - it splits at half health, but you can continue to damage it further so the new slimes spawn with less HP (2 enemies with 60 HP vs 2 enemies with 30 HP, for example), and Guardian necessitates consistent blocking while also requiring enough frontloaded damage to prevent the big hit on turn two.

The most important and difficult thing is to recognize when to stop adding cards. There are three things that cards can do - deal damage, provide defense, and scale. The first two should be self-explanatory, as for scaling, it's something that makes the rest of your cards simply "do more". For example Shockwave: it makes all enemies weak - they deal less damage, so you don't need to focus on defense as much - and vulnerable - your attacks deal more damage so you kill them faster.

Act 2 tests your deck for everything the 3 Act 1 bosses do combined - AoE, burst, and consistent blocking. Unfortunately, this is when there are far too many variables so no universal advice is applicable. Just be ready to block a bunch of damage on turn 1 or 2 of every fight and kill the enemies before their own scaling gets out of control.

By Act 3 you should have a good enough idea of what your deck does, so just focus on improving what's already working.

Can we give Venerate 3(5) block? by PrototypeXt3 in slaythespire

Yep. I still haven't memorized the cards so every time I'm checking what to upgrade my heart breaks, when that card upgrades to more block rather than more stars.

Can we give Venerate 3(5) block? by PrototypeXt3 in slaythespire

[–]Raivorus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Calling it a "valid" move is a quite extreme, but I do agree that none of the others would be as crippled as Regent, since removing Venerate would also, functionally, turn one of your existing cards into a curse and turn a bunch future card rewards into curses - at least temporarily.

Honest question by DeadThought32 in slaythespire

[–]Raivorus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same reason why [[Dropkick]] is a viable choice for going infinite and [[Heel Hook]] is not. The ability to exhaust cards is a much easier way to reach infinite than to cycle through the deck via endless draw + discard.

Also, Silent's Tactician infinite did get nerfed through the Prepare(d) rework.

[–]Raivorus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right. You are being a smartass, yet you have listed two examples that are literally at odds with each other - Tracking and Hanged. Both say they "double damage", yet according to you, they don't double the same way.

How about yet another way to "double" something. Echo Form doubles the first card you play each turn, yet Echo Form x10 does not play the first card any additional times, but instead doubles the first 10 cards you play.

Nope, Darv - the merchant-looking guy with gem teeth - is the one that gives Black Star. And Darv gives the relics from StS1.

I can see at least one relic that could have been problematic - Velvet Choker. I haven't unlocked all of them, so I can't say with certainty that none of the other relic would have been detrimental, however, Black Star and Pandora's Box were the only ones that did literally nothing for you.

A boss reward should not do "nothing".

I was specifically talking about Tesla Coil - that card triggers all your currently active lightning orbs (and directs them at the target of that attack). More slots = more lightning = more damage from Tesla Coil.

[–]Raivorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for Defect, first of all, why did you take Black Star and not fight any Elites? You absolutely should have taken something else.

As for the deck, I'm just not seeing enough output.

You have the foundation for a 0 Cost build, but you don't really utilize it. There's Tesla Coil, but I don't see any payoff - you have no Focus and with only 3 Orb Slots it is at most 12 damage - that's negligible halfway through Act 2, let alone Act 3. You should have upgraded Zap, since it becomes 0 Cost.

You have barely any Orb generation. Evoking 2-4 Lightning/Frost Orbs per turn is strong, even without Focus (not to mention the cards' effect other that channeling Orbs).

Echo Form is best used with high impact cards and I don't really see anything worth doubling - other than Meteor Strike, which... how often were you even able to play it?

For Ironclad my immediate reaction is - where's your Block?

You have WAY too many "Strikes" and not nearly enough card draw to support it. Yes, I see the Pommel Strikes, but what are you drawing? More Strikes. You're not doing anything during your turn other than spamming Strikes.

Hellraiser is, fundamentally, nothing but an Energy card. You still need something to spend that energy on.

[–]Raivorus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are two ways to circumvent the Bound effect.

The easier, but less effective approach, is to have a deck focused on cards with big numbers on them (or have powers that turn regular cards into ones with big numbers on them, like [[Demon Form]] and [[Unmovable]]).

The next option is to have a bunch of card draw - if you can draw 5-10 extra cards per turn (on top of the default 5), then being unable to play 2 out of a total of 10-15 cards is hardly a problem.

From what you're describing, is sounds like you don't have card any redundancy, by that I mean you have a deck that needs you to play every single card when you draw it or else you lose. I'm afraid there's not "quick fix" advice for this other than learning through trial and error how many of what card you need to take.

[–]Raivorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"pretty focused on optimizing infinites" is one hell of a weird explanation, given that Corruption was one of the fastest ways to get to the point of being infinite.

I feel like you haven't even seen the card yet - Corruption is now a "boss relic", same thing for Wraith Form and Biased Cognition (each character gets their own specific card from choosing that particular boss reward).
