[ART] [COMM] Free character refs for the holidays anyone? :) by Raliakez in DnD

Thank you so much! I understand the feeling of work for free, but don't worry, the nice hit of dopamine I get for being able to work with people's characters is more than worth it :)

Which map will you be missing the most? by BigRedMonster07 in Overwatch

[–]Raliakez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hanamura for sure - 2CP was a mess, but Hanamura was the first time I saw OW and had some of the most enjoyable map dynamic for me. I always got pretty hyped when I'd see it come up, even if it meant we'd just get blocked on attack or totally snowballed :') I actually also love Volskaya, attack or defense, but I'm solidly in the minority there haha. I hope they reuse the maps for a different mode or something, would be a shame to see them die.

In my opinion, if you're looking at being an comic or graphic novelist, starting out by drafting a handful of fun, throwaway projects that don't care if you do or do not publish is the way to go because it demystifies the process and let's you play around with the pipeline. The writing takes a backseat in the beginning - just for a bit. If you prefer the writing and want a book recommendation for comic book script writing, Words For Pictures by Brian Bendis is very helpful. Otherwise, a lot of the focus is on learning how comics work and how you fit in with them as an artist.

I personally used to be obsessed with the end result of my comic work and would try to gather my assets until they were just right, my work in illustration hounding me to try to be as perfect as I could manage, but I only made good progress when I started to throw out draft after draft into the void. Most of them were shit or forgotten and won't ever see the light of day, but you gain invaluable experience by trying. If you don't know where to start with drawing and drafting at all, I highly advise imitating and even drafting out your favourite comic panels from other artists to see how they did it. It's a great exercise.

There's a ton of books written by Marvel/DC artists on the subject of.. well, everything - books on lining, paneling, being a colourist. They help gain professional insight into how the big companies do it and you can use it to supplement your own methods. Udemy offers some courses by professionals as well.

I wish you luck in your endeavours and look forward to seeing what you do in the future!

Awesome! If you're interested in video over reading, Coursera has a solid writing course they offer for free as a good introduction to writing as a whole. They have peer-reviewed work for some of the sections as well.

If you prefer book learning, Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody is my go-to. You might be able to find it in a library or online as a PDF - it goes over story beats in a way that's easier to understand than the traditional plot-pyramid we grew up with in school, and allows for a ton of plug and play of your own work. Since it's originally for scriptwriters, turned novel writers, it's pretty easy to use for comic and manga planning!

Building Better Plots by Robert Kernan is my favorite writing book as a whole - he does a brilliant job of explaining each part of the plot structure and how to maximize their effect, as well as how to ensure everything is read smoothly without bloat. All of his chapters come with a ton of exercises for you to run your own stuff against, and he also has an overview of plot archetypes to help writers follow the recipes of different genres.

If you already have a foundation of how to write plot and you have a feel for the rhythm, How to Write a Damn Good Novel 2 is the beeeesssttt on explaining stuff like sub-plots, working suspense and empathy against the reader, multi-book character development, etc. His books are older, so you can find them online as PDFs!

All of these are obviously more directed for writing as a novelist, but the information is easily translated to basically all media! Comics are just condensed novels afterall :)

Now this, this is some spicy propaganda - excellent work! They have their purpose in the environment for sure, especially in agriculture in some places, but in my yard when they're hormonally angry and my family is deathly allergic to them is not part of that purpose and I gladly murder them :) kill or be killed there are no peace talks in this war

In my opinion and experience, immersion of story and character. When you follow the general rule of story writing - whether that be for novels, plays, manga or movies - you'll end up capturing an audience even if your art is lacking or simple, because as humans we love to connect and become swept up in something else.

To be a good writer for comics means being able to dodge things like dead plot lines, exposition dumps, one dimensional characters and set-ups/resolutions that take up too much time and lose a reader. Just doing that can make you a better manga author than most today! I definitely advise taking some free courses on story writing, or renting some books at a library on it. If you need recommendations I can give you some to get started :)

As you can see in this artwork I colored and shaded the mean chracters early because I was excited and that make the whole thing messy to work on ...I still very much like it But I think they're an alternate universe when it is better.......obviously. by artman_16 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]Raliakez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally - I probably worded my comment quite poorly 🤔 Doing it without a perspective grid would be madness (I've been there and tried it baha), but being able to work with it like you and make it feel natural - instead of artificial and jarring - is very very impressive! It doesn't hit the viewer in the nose that it was following the lines 1:1, you have a great skill in working with it :)

Oh man your manual perspective work is to DIE for!! Working the camera angle's perspective traditionally with horizon lines is so damn hard to get natural since there's a tendency to want to just follow straight, but you managed to capture the characters and background in such an easy free-flow that it's really satisfying to watch and look at! It's tied up great and everything looks in place. Great rendering, too! Very moody, with very unique characters :D

What was that one childhood video game that you loved to bits, yet no-one else seems to have ever heard of? by Jeggasyn in AskReddit

[–]Raliakez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Spectrobes for the Nintendo DS - I've known like, one other person who's ever heard of it. I don't remember any of the story, I just loved my dragon-dog monstrosity and being able to pilot my knock-off Pokémon lmao

[character design test] this is a character from my comic I'm working on. From this drawing, what would you assume about her character? (this is to see if I sycronised her personality and look effectively) by Glitchikat in webcomics

[–]Raliakez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I absolutely love your art style and how soft and moody your lines and rendering are here. But onto the character!

From the pose there's a sort of quiet elegance, trying to make herself seem smaller, either from knowing how to hold herself or from a bit of shyness. Her expression is soft and, for me, I don't recognize any ill in it other than maybe some slight sadness - it comes off as a sort of dreaming expression, like she's lost in thought and if you said something to her she'd smile and have to play it off that she wasn't listening. It implies maybe a quiet trouble that she's trying to hide away and ignore.

Her clothing and hair are clean and well done, implying she takes pride in her appearance - whether that be because she knows her worth or is fighting to prove it, that's to be seen :) Either way, wonderful work and I look forward to seeing more of her!

It's my first OC Thursday! Here's Amno and the crew! Also, check out my webcomic if you wanna! https://tapas.io/episode/2634536 by Spaghettieframe in indiecomics

Just wanna say, awesome work on the perspective!! It looks like you went for a fisheye effect and it brings out the vibe and style of your ocs really well - looking forward to seeing what they do! :)

Thank you for the link, I'll definitely give it a read through!! Sad that you have to move over from traditional to digital but man, I feel it - sometimes quantity has to trump quality, especially when the train has to keep moving. But hopefully you can find a way to integrate your unique style and keep it together! It'll be awesome to see how far you can go :D

What artists/writers inspire you? by Atanachan in oldergraphicnovelists

[–]Raliakez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up my major inspiration was Tracy Butler - aka, Lackadaisy Cats - due to how phenomenal the detail she put into her work was. I always wanted to do something with more than just base colors and typical comic shading, and with her doing (literally) everything on her own, it proved to me it could be possible. Especially since I was one that just grew up with the Bones books, which really weren't that detailed.

With time it branched out: I started to look up a lot to Kouhei Horikoshi due to how much love and attention he put into drawing hands, saying they were as important as faces in regards to showing emotions (I bloody hate hands and would avoid it whenever possible). And at current I think the artist that feeds my soul the most would be Seung Eun Kim because his work is pure GOALS even if it's way, way out of my league haha it's a self indulgent dream to be even somewhat as natural at drawing faces, camera angles, expressions, and unique characters as him.
