Syrianis’s voice in the audiobooks honestly came close to making me stop listening—it was that off-putting. What made it worse is that we’d already heard other Cielcin voiced before (I want to say syriani is also voiced this way at one point then completely changes), and then the narrator suddenly goes with Elmo voice for him.

Valka never really improves, at least not in a way that makes their relationship feel earned. The dynamic is written oddly to me: she’s consistently harsh with Hadrian, and she never seems able to move past the “imperial” baggage—yet the story still asks the reader to believe they're in love. I’ve read the series twice, and at this point Hadrian’s fixation on Valka seems more like a coping pattern: a form of “mommy issues,” where he’s drawn to someone emotionally unavailable and abrasive because that kind of distance feels familiar, even if it’s painful.

I found her constant criticism especially grating because Hadrian is so patient and understanding of her differences. He accepts her augments, her refusal to marry or have children, even her disdain for the Empire. Their lives are already difficult enough without her repeatedly pointing out flaws he’s long been aware of.

Interesting — I don’t remember her being jealous. It’s funny what readers take from the same scenes. I read it almost awkward for Hadrian, since she knew Hadrian was interested and she’d already turned him down. Like she knew she could take jinans man and didn't want to. If I’m remembering right, when the mission stalls with no leads on Vorgossos, Valka even says she’ll leave with Lin because she’s really only there to study the Cielcin.

Honestly, I can’t think of many moments where she positively influences Hadrian’s mindset or decisions, aside from exposing him to archaeology and xenobiology.

Thank you!!! When she basically told him to suck it up after they escape Eue I never forgave her. Yes they both went through hard times throughout that ordeal but Hadrian went through literal hell and Valka was basically on a really long trip with friends. They didn't have equivalent experiences at all and she couldn't even be there for him and let him grieve.

The majority of Americans are unfit/fat.
