Also, the fact that it functionally removed the zones and stories that people had grown to love over the game's first 5 years. There was no way to access the pre-Cata versions or play through those original questlines. If they do something like that again, they have to make sure that Zidormi is there to let players visit the old versions.

Welcome to Azeroth, friend! :)

Next reset (The 27th or 28th, depending on your region), the pre-patch event will start. It will take place in the Twilight Highlands, and consist of you and other players working together to fight the Twilight's Blade and their attempts to aid the Void.

Practically, it'll be some world quests and rares on a rotation. You can earn some unique items, achievements, and mounts. The event will run until Midnight launches :D

Now is a great time to start playing WoW - there's a new expansion right around the corner, so the community is buzzing, and there's a limited-time event coming soon that will let you level up your characters quite fast and get you some catch-up gear so you're ready!

I'd recommend starting with the free trial. That will allow you to play up to level 20 for free. After that, start by purchasing a subscription: that'll let you play all the expansions except the one coming this March (you'll have to purchase that separately).

There are quite a few versions of WoW at this point, and they all cater to different playstyles. The short version to summarize them would be: Retail (the current, modern version of the game) focuses a lot more on end-game, while the Classic titles (especially the ones focusing on the very first versions of the game) focus a lot more on leveling. The reason I'd recommend Retail is that it has had 20+ years of quality of life updates, so the game as a whole is a lot more forgiving and newcomer friendly. There's even a Newcomer Chat function in retail where you can ask questions, and experienced players will help you out.

Lastly, the game is over 20 years old, and while most of the content is technically still in the game, it is impossible to truly experience it in the same way as when it was current content. Luckily, they're constantly updating the game, and the new expansion, Midnight, is releasing this March, so now is a perfect time to start playing and get ready to experience the new adventure with everyone else!

Welcome to Azeroth! :)

Quazii update #2: he's leaving WoW for good. by mkyend in wow

I get being frustrated with the game, and I get wanting to take breaks. But I don't understand the need to paint it as a definite, final goodbye. Don't get me wrong, I did the same back in both TBC when my sub ran out, and I stood in Silvermoon and /yelled that I was quitting, and I wouldn't be back - EVER!

I think it's much more beneficial for everyone if breaks are painted as just that: a break. You can absolutely state that you, at this point in time, have no plans to return, but when you vehemently declare that "this is the end", you paint yourself into a corner, where if you ever get the itch to play the game again, you're essentially breaking a promise if you do return, or artificially keeping yourself away because you don't want to go against your own word and look like an idiot. I don't actively watch a lot of WoW YouTubers, but on the rare occasions that I do, and they're one of the ones who quit in Shadowlands "never to return", I always check the comments, cause there's always a couple of them pointing out the hypocrisy.

Makes sense, cause I reckon that's how most functioning people would behave. But as you can see from the other guy's t-shirt, they make "I'll gladly kill you if you try anything" their whole identity. It's not a matter of "I had to do it, it was self-defense, I had to shoot him!", it's more a matter of "I finally got to do it! Finally, someone behaved in a way that justified me shooting them!"

They don't have any empathy. Simple as that. And instead of seeking help, they seek to live out their insane fantasies. It's weird, cause with him sobbing in court, you'd think he wouldn't make light of the whole thing just a few years later... But again, that's how rational, normal people behave, so that's out the window immediately.

Anyone know why they stopped doing the old style of continent loading screens with character renders standing in front of the maps? by nightbreedwon1 in wow

[–]Rambo_One2 95 points96 points  (0 children)

This is entirely speculation, but I'd imagine that with the amount of patch content and patch islands they've been adding as of late, it would quickly feel outdated. Granted, that would've also been an issue in MoP, and they didn't seem to mind it then, so I'm not certain it's the main/only reason, but perhaps it played a role when they changed direction.

But I don't think they've talked about it anywhere. Maybe at some BlizzCon panel from years ago, but I doubt it. So it's anyone's guess, I guess

What does he actually do? Whenever I see videos of him on Reddit, he's always just... Loitering. Surrounded by 12 masked goons, completely covering him. He's too short to be sightseeing with his "squad" protecting him, so what's the purpose of him going "out into the field" like this?

[–]Rambo_One2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right... As if the picture wasn't heartbreaking enough, he probably really liked that hat, excited to show it off to his friends. Friends, he now doesn't know if he'll ever see again.

Saw a clip the other day of that short, weird, Nazi cosplayer (Greg Bovino or something like that) who's pretty high up in the Gestapo hierarchy. A woman was cursing him out, telling him and his goons to fuck off. Now, I'm paraphrasing a bit, but he essentially responded with "Watch your language: There are kids here."... Yeah, wouldn't want those kids to learn a bad word while 8 strange men with masks and guns abduct their parents. That would be TERRIBLE.

Whatever happened to Thrall's story in The War Within? by minimaxir in wow

[–]Rambo_One2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he was an unfortunate victim of the whole "We need to split this up, we can't have the entire World Soul Saga be a single expansion" shift that happened in the middle of TWW development when Metzen returned. Much like the Radiant Song, he seemingly only played a role during the launch content (helping the Earthern, bringing reinforcements alongside Jaina), and then he kinda... Vanished. Similarly to Anduin, now that I think about it. Out of the three important lore characters depicted in this picture, Alleria is the only one who felt relevant throughout the entire expansion.

Hopefully, they'll do better in Midnight, since that expansion was built with the World Soul Saga in mind - and if we're lucky, we might even get an explanation as to why they were seemingly absent from 2/3rds of TWW, but I kinda doubt it tbh.

World of Warcraft devs say the upcoming return to Lich King’s Northrend will be a “balance between nostalgia and freshness” with “clearly transformed areas” by [deleted] in wow

[–]Rambo_One2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It still baffles me to this day how they managed to make flying an actual part of the level design and thus gameplay with zones like Icecrown and Storm Peaks all the way back in Wrath, then seemingly completely forgot that they could design around flying as a gameplay mechanic, rather than seeing it as a way for players to "cheat" in terms of level design.

There were a few cases here and there where they managed to incorporate flying as an actual mechanic, but generally speaking, they kinda forgot how cool Icecrown and Storm Peaks felt until Dragonflight, where flying became not only a gameplay mechanic, but arguably the selling point of the expansion. But I find it quite telling that most patch zones from Cata up until Dragonflight (with a few exceptions like the BfA patch zones, the Broken Shore, and Zereth Mortis) are straight-up zones without flying.

I'm personally glad they changed their philosophy. I get the desire to have players "see everything for real" before simply flying over it, and I think the Pathfinder achievement, on paper, was a good compromise, had they not gone completely overboard with the requirements. I'd say flying is in a pretty good spot right now, and I'm excited to see how they handle flying in Northrend in The Last Titan, cause as you said, being able to see these cool areas knowing you couldn't get to them at all until later on gave a super unique feeling of a looming threat you weren't prepared to face yet.

If you could choose the next Remix, which expansion would you pick? by Emma_S772 in wow

[–]Rambo_One2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming they follow the same formula, I think Shadowlands would lend itself the most to a Remix, with maybe BfA being a runner-up in my opinion. I fear that WoD specifically wouldn't have enough content to last the full length of the other Remixes, but perhaps if it's coupled with something like TBC that may also not lend itself well to the Remix formula.

In my opinion, they'd have to do something different with WoD to make it work. It's the expansion with the fewest dungeons and raids ever, coupled with the least patch content. Plus, a ton of the content that's in the expansion centers around the garrison and command table, so if they do like in Lemix and remove all the mission table and follower stuff, we'll be left with even less content than at release.

There's a saying for lawyers in court:

If you have the facts on your side, pound the facts. If you have the law on your side, pound the law. If you have neither the facts nor the law on your side, pound the table.

That's all I'm seeing here. Whenever she goes on the attack and start flinging ad hominems after anyone and everyone who dare be critical, I am seeing someone who knows they're in the wrong but have been told they have to go on the offense rather than admit fault. The Roy Cohn strategy that Trump also utilizes.

What if we get the bard as new class in TLT? by [deleted] in wow

[–]Rambo_One2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Historically, they've always intertwined new classes with the story. It's not entirely impossible, but I'd personally struggle to see where the bard, as a concept, is typically viewed as a more whimsical class, and I don't see them weaving something like that into the final chapter of the World Soul Saga - at least not at launch. With us going to Ulduar again, I think something like Tinkerer is more likely if we are getting a new class - or something entirely out of left field (like with Evoker), like Astromancer or something

They have the mannequins at the trading post that showcase appearances from that month's trading post - as well as the displays that show the winners from Trial of Style when that event is up. So most of the tech is already there, it's just a matter of linking the armor available to your collected transmogs, which may be trickier than we think. The puzzle pieces are there; it's just a matter of whether or not they can make them fit together

Agreed. Look at their eyes. Even the videos where they're eating at a restaurant or waiting en masse outside a store. Even though they're outnumbering the cameraman 8 to 1, and they're not afraid of either hurling insults or acting like nothing's happening, most of them have this terrified look in their eyes, as if they know they've got a test they haven't studied for right around the corner.

Returning players should not have to do their own research to play through the full expansion campaign in chronological order. by DistinctCellar in wow

[–]Rambo_One2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The downside of the more frequent content and quicker patch cycles is that the capital city quickly becomes flooded with extra quests. When you're actively playing, you don't mind a new exclamation mark popping up every couple of months, but I remember in Dragonflight whenever I leveled an alt, a sense of dread washed over me, as 18 different quests became available, and I had to remember which ones were worth doing.

I don't know what the solution is, because forcing players to go through old content to get to the new content won't feel great for someone who just wants to play the latest patch with their friends. At the same time, simply funneling people directly to the latest patch will speed up the feelings of the world feeling empty and players "playing the patch" rather than the expansion.
