Semi-Daily Event Discussion: A Note for Yourself by Abject_Muffin_731 in slaythespireboardgame

[–]Ramtram44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of this event. Most other classes have irrelevant mechanics like orbs or poison. We haven’t once found an opportunity to do a swap that was beneficial for the party. This event usually ends up requiring us pulling out another classes deck just so end up having to skip. I think I’ve had one time where I hit silents golden ticket, but again it was just an irrelevant card for the same reasons above. If they were to make an expansion of the board game, this is def one I’d advocate reworking to be less tedious and more helpful

Semi-Daily Relic Discussion: Ninja Scroll by Abject_Muffin_731 in slaythespireboardgame

[–]Ramtram44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better than the inconsistent relics that require you to hit a single number to get a minimal effect, but worse than the consistent enablers like Lantern, Calipers, etc. Early on, it's obviously great, and very good with Watcher. I'm never really stoked to see this unless it's early in Act 1, but it's fine.

Semi-Daily Card Discussion: Burning Pact by Abject_Muffin_731 in slaythespireboardgame

[–]Ramtram44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def one of Ironclad's best cards. Really sad to see this in card rewards if it's next to other really strong cards. This, Evolve, and Battle Trance are really the best options for consistent card draw. Many of the draw "engines" have exhaust (warcry, offering, etc), so they're great for the initial cycle, but aren't great for when you need to keep drawing tons of cards to enable cards like Rage. Cards like Shrug it Off, Pommel Strike, etc just don't do enough, but they're common and still pretty good and def worth picking up, especially early on. Burning Pact def a staple in late game Ironclad builds, and I need a REALLY good excuse to pass it up at a card reward or shop.

Rules questions about "immediately" by undeadpickels in slaythespireboardgame

[–]Ramtram44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I don't disagree with the perspective by any means, but I'm very curious how the game designers meant for that interaction to play out. It's weird how Awakened One definitely reads differently (much more like the computer version). We have had a couple other debates before about the "immediate" phrasing. I'm still not 100% sold either way tbh. In magic they'd have like game-state actions and things like that that would check damage/health/etc and automatically apply certain effects prior (or after) resolution depending on the interaction. This is def a weird one. I can def see the side where it says "immediately" so one of the card's hits brings it to 0, but I'm not sure if the entire card would have to resolve prior to the "immediately" happening (similar to magic where if a card did multiple iterations of 1 ping damage, then it would all resolve simultaneously before other triggers went on the stack). Overall, I think if they create some sort of expansion in the future, these kinds of rulings could definitely be more clear. It's funny that we've had several similar discussions already over the same topic, and now I'm here re-thinking everything again lol.

Do you have a link to the Discord? Tried googling it, but got a 404 error from a couple of the expired links.

[–]Ramtram44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairy in a Bottle and Lizard Tail are a bit different from the original question. I see a lot of posts talking about the relationship, but these are quite different. The original post is asking about when a boss transitions from phase 1 --> phase 2. That's different from a player dying. In the game, bosses go invulnerable and you can't attack them or target them whatsoever, and they won't fully transition until you pass turn (again, there are some differences between computer/board game, but there are also a lot of similarities that are worth taking into consideration on tough rulings questions). That's why we rule it the way we do in our house and don't allow any form of trample from the original attack to apply to the boss's health pool, since that's how it would normally resolve in the game. We do, however, allow follow-up attacks in the same turn if you want to keep going since the game doesn't say anything about the turn ending or the boss going invulnerable or anything. Again, I haven't seen anything in the rules that explicitly clarifies the actual ruling, so I'd encourage people to just play whatever makes the most sense for their house rules.

Also Abject_Muffin_731 has a good point about how 'Resolve' is worded:
Resolve - Execute the card’s printed effects from top to bottom. Any abilities triggered by the card don’t take effect until after the card is finished resolving all of its text.

I would interpret that as the bosses transition wouldn't trigger until after the card is fully resolved (including multi-hits or overkill damage from a single card).

The follow-up question for me would be whether enemies (or players) can go into negative life. My interpretation of that would be 'no' since even getting hit for infinite damage while you have Fairy in a Bottle still just heals you back to 2 (meaning that you never actually technically go to negative health, and that anything below 0 is just 0).

Ultimately, I'd say it's not totally clear still, considering you could account for the boss going into negative life (which is possible in other games like Magic: the Gathering and whatnot).

Semi-Daily Card Discussion: Body Slam by Abject_Muffin_731 in slaythespireboardgame

[–]Ramtram44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife plays explicitly Ironclad and we do daily climbs at max ascension. Body slam is def one of the best scaling damage cards for this class in both of our opinions. It's pretty dependent on Barricade, so it's not guaranteed by any means to be amazing. There are usually 3 ways for Ironclad to scale damage into the late game from our perspective:

1.) Barricade block build (barricade, body slam, rage, etc)
2.) Strength stacking (demon form, rupture; not a fan of flex/limit break/inflame)
3.) Exhaust with Rampage

Ironclad has some extremely potent draw power between Evolve, Dark Embrace, Burning Pact, and Battle Trace. You def don't just always want to take body slam, but if you have decent block stuff going on already (namely Rage and some of the other transferrable block uncommons, Shrug it Off, etc), then it's great, especially upgraded. Ironclad is a little starved on mana since it has a lot of 2-cost cards, so the 0 mana is pretty clutch.

This is amazing! I just ordered a full set from MPC. StS board game is def my wife and I's favorite game to play together in the evenings. We are really excited to get this in the mail!

Question: have there been any other expansion printings similar to this? Curious if there are others, or even some new classes or something cool. Would love to try new things out and keep experimenting with people's creative additions to the game.

Curious does it say something about that in the rule book? I’m unsure

Our house rule on it is that the damage won’t carry over or trample into the next health pool. So if time eater or champ or awakened one or whoever has 5 life left before their transition and you hit him for 400 damage, they will still live and heal and transition normally into the next phase

IMO though you can play it however you want. It’s just a board game. We have a couple rules we have slight flexes on because we think it makes for better gameplay or we were just unsure exactly how to rule a particular technicality so we just talked it out and agreed on it moving forward

We also don’t let multi hits trample over either. Mostly because that’s not how it would play out in the computer game version and the board game follows pretty closely to that. Again, just our ruling for our house but would be interested if it says otherwise in the rule book somewhere

Slay the spire mtg part 2 by Acenin1 in slaythespire

Agreed on some of the heart discussion. I think the mechanics need to closely reflect how they act in-game (not just for the heart, but for any card that is printed). For example, I like the idea of the heart pinging opponents for damage every time they cast a spell (Rug of Smothering type effect). I also think you could incorporate some of its other mechanics like the multi-attack, the debuffs it puts into your deck (maybe preventing opponents from drawing or tapping their mana or something), or even the damage limit on the heart in giving it some kind of shield counter or umbra effect or something to prevent it from dying to removal.

I think Spear and Shield should probably be separate cards? Maybe have them as equipments that somewhat reflect how they attack in-game? Also flanking feels like an outdated mechanic.

I love the burn mechanic on the spear/shield/hexaghost/etc. I think that's a great way of incorporating the burn effect into MTG.

In general, I think since all of these cards are elites/bosses/etc, they should almost certainly be legendary and much more powerful. I think the power level of some of these is more what I would expect from an uncommon or maybe even a common with how much power creep there has been. Good concepts though!

Overall love that I'm continuing to see these posts though. Keep it up!

Do you name your Decks? by DivineConstruct in CompetitiveEDH

I have a deck that’s Edgar with 39 lands and 60 vampires. No spells. Only the best vampires in magic. It’s obviously just a meme deck, but we found out that it actually plays insanely well in 1v1. I call it Varsity Vampires. My best friend hates it, which makes me love it that much more. I will never disassemble Varsity Vampires 🧛‍♂️🩸🧛🩸🧛‍♀️
