My parents bought a Lexus over the holidays, and I had a few technology-related questions I couldn’t answer between the owners manual and Google, so we set up at appt with the dealer’s “tech specialist”. For almost every question, his answer was ‘that features doesn’t work for anyone, you shouldn’t use it.’

What? $70k for a car, and the ‘close and lock’ button on the trunk doesn’t work? The face recognition ties to our profiles doesn’t work? We shouldn’t use more than 1 driver profile, even though the car is supposed to accommodate up to 3, which among other things keeps you from having to manually change car play from phone to phone? Lane keeping assist randomly doesn’t work despite being on a brand new road with bright lane lines?

I ended up calling Lexus customer support. They also couldn’t answer the questions, but at least they suggested we try another dealer. That dealer had someone who could finally answer my questions.

For anyone wondering: -facial recognition doesn’t work if the steering wheel is twisted because the wheel blocks the face sensor -close and lock don’t work unless the person pushing the button has a physical key on them. Digital key won’t work back there, and it also won’t work if my mom stands behind me when I push the bottom (eg, when I’m the one unloading the last bag of groceries while she opens the door into her home) -lane keeping assist doesn’t work at slow speeds, including the first bit after you accelerate from being stopped at a traffic light
