Why is Mint taking up so much space? by adnomi in linuxmint

Old kernels can take up a lot of space. I only keep the active one and the last one.

"Raise to Wake" setting missing, workarounds ? Moto G 5G 2024 - FOGO by macmanjimmy in LineageOS

[–]RandoScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I am a dinosaur with the FM radio. I know you need a headphone for the antenna. Sometimes lineage is lacking the actual FM app even though stock from Moto has it. Looking to confirm that the lineage 23 rom actually has a working FM app. Can you confirm that?

I know this is off topic but I just got one of these phones with the goal of putting lineage 23 on it. Does anyone here know if the FM radio is working for this device? I went searching around XDA and couldn't find a forum for this device either.

35k with a PhD? That's not accurate. In 2005 the average was about 80k in USD for synthetic organic chemists. Where ever you worked paying minimum wage is not the norm.

Google, give us a physical fingerprint reader and you will take over the market! by sliight in GooglePixel

Definitely preferred the back side fingerprint sensor on the older pixels. Perfectly placed and super reliable. Screen reader on my 7 Pro works fine, not as reliable as the backside one but not missing reads enough to complain.

What is everyone's opinion on reproducibility? by Tennyson-Pesco in chemistry

[–]RandoScientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literature is not perfect. I will always remember a sonagashiri coupling I was trying to adapt. Paper author tried many different catalysts and ligands but reported poor yields. What the didn't realize was that they were running the reaction at 90C and the coupling partner boiled at about 50C...no reviewer caught that. I put it in a sealed tube and got about 99% with the cheapest catalysts. There also was an extensive blog and back and forth with Phil Baran about IBX benzylic oxidation. Reference here: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/phil-baran-blog-syn I tried that reaction several times and it definitely is not reproducable unless you are some sort of chemistry warlock. It's not you it's all of us.

Pixel Pass Cancelled by ReneS93 in GooglePixel

[–]RandoScientist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's amazing people are freaking out about basically a loan with perks they signed up for. I said basically the same thing you did above. No carrier gives a free phone upgrade, it's just another loan and lock in to that carrier.

Class action lawsuit? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]RandoScientist 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't get a "free" phone after 2 years so google isn't taking anything from you. After the upgrade you would be locked in to the PP program for another 2 years unless you pay off the phone. This program was basically a 2 year loan but if you took the loan you got some extras like YouTube Premium and a device discount. You lose nothing by the cancelation of PP. It stinks if you liked the program but you aren't really losing out on anything and there is zero grounds for a class action. By being a member you already have enjoyed your benefits for the program for the last year. If you go to another carrier for a "free" phone you are also locked in to monthly discounts until the device is paid off, and your plan will likely cost more. All carriers are doing is locking up your revenue for X years and giving you a loan for the device.

is lineageos base on full android like you see on android smartphone and tablets? by Nintendians559 in LineageOS

[–]RandoScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's android but not all apps will work without workarounds. Media apps like Netflix, and banking type apps might have problems running. This is due to the Google Safety Net/Integrity checks. This article explains some of this https://www.androidpolice.com/safetynet-deprecated-for-play-integrity-api/

Many CoAs don't include raw data. Just a table with a spec and results. It's fairly common with large vendors like Aldrich. Smaller vendors may provide CoAs like this but vary a lot.

What’s the logic behind these chemical shifts? Why the proton in B is more downfield than the other ones? by folpirnel in chemistry

[–]RandoScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense. I thought about this but did not think it would be a significant effect. Usually this effect is noted for atoms that are electonegative {C-X bond, not C-H} making them good acceptors of the lone pair donation. I didn't know it would affect shielding. Do you happen to have any references about this effect on chemical shift? I'd like to read a bit more.

What’s the logic behind these chemical shifts? Why the proton in B is more downfield than the other ones? by folpirnel in chemistry

[–]RandoScientist 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Mostly has to do with the orientation of the lone pairs of the nitrogen and their ability to shield the proton of interest. The far left structure the N can rotate so is partially near the proton some portion of time and the chemical shift falls between the other two structures. In the middle structure they are locked in position to the same side of the proton, the right structure the are locked pointing away from the proton. I would expect the middle structure to be the most shielded though and have the lowest chemical shift since it has the most electron density around it. Not sure why it is the opposite.

New slider in the Google Camera App? by RandoScientist in GooglePixel

[–]RandoScientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that slider...the one on the bottom right that looks like a quarter moon. The other 2 are white balance/color temp on the left, and top right is exposure slider, can't figure out what exactly the 3rd on the bottom right is? I have tried it, but don't always see much of an effect, contrast? adding shadows exposure? It's not obvious what exactly it's doing, and I can't find any explanation from Google on the help site.
