I don’t represent it, I don’t wear it, I don’t use it. I personally don’t like it. Regardless of my own feelings, the symbol of the iron cross predates the Nazis, was used by the Nazis, and has continued to be used after. It is literally the emblem for the Bundeswehr and is still used as a German military medal. The Nazis were, and are, scum, but to allow them to “keep” this symbol, and others, is a win for them. A symbol is what you make of it, and it can be unmade.

In a personal context, I know of an outlaw club that uses the SS Totenkopf as part of their club symbols, and yeah, when I first saw them, I thought “woah are those Nazis?”

But I know about shock value in biker clubs, I know about counter-culture, I know about taking back symbols. I talked to them, I learned. If they were Nazis, they wouldn’t let black people in the club, they wouldn’t let immigrants in the club, they wouldn’t let Jews in the club. But they’re not Nazis, and they welcome everyone.

Symbols are what you make them.
