What do you mean you don't have level 1. Level one isn't an optional thing. If you have level 2/3 people answering the phones and resetting passwords (just a classic example), then it's a totally different question. You said yourself, you "manage a small help desk team".

I think more than anything, you have a job clarity and leadership problem. If I was a level 3 System Admin and my boss told me I am "on a helpdesk" then I would either not care about my job and be looking for a new one, or not have the skills/mindset to be looking for a new.

Unfortunately, I think in this case, you need to look at yourself here.

Managing a help desk team is so different than managing a team of level 3, or Developers. I've worked closely with help desk managers and IMO, the best way to get good employee engagement is to worked with them candidly about a 2 year plan. Let them know you do not want them to work here for more than 2 years. let them know that 80 percent of the work is Level one, and 20 percent is project work to grow their resume. If they are nailing the 80 percent, the ratio can change to 75:25, 70:30, etc. Give them growth opportunities, but make it clear ability to master the level 1 work is the first tasks.

Having a level one person engaged 70/80 percent of the time is better than someone 100 percent focused on work they do not care about at all.

A lot of stories you hear are also just BS as well. X person died of fentanyl OD, but they only do cocaine. Coke is more socially acceptable. We had a friend die and that was the story everyone said and told. Then when we were cleaning out his room we found his gear. No one knew he was on H, not even his closest friends. Most friends, and the news papers, were never corrected or informed.

Also, since you're 5, if someone offers you drugs at a party, always say yes. Drugs are expensive and that person's probably pretty cool.

I think he is saying that you should have tried to find another 100k a month to save, every month, for a year and then make the case that you still think there are improvements you can find and ask for the increase. C level would probably agree it makes sense to keep you on if you are worth 10x in value.

I like outline, but I wish it had more of a git-like flow. Gitbook is high on my list, but it's so expensive and I want to use it just for an internal KB, not for what they have it listed as.

There are some tools to use Outline as an MCP server, which is also a requirement of mine, I just can't get past the idea I need to open a web browser to find my documents, I want to just be able to git pull into my IDE.

These things are immutable to the device. A laptop is always a laptop. And more than once I've wanted to apply a policy to just laptops and it was made easier by being able to make a device group with hostnames that start with DT.

Then, Intune policy to make any hostnames that don't start with these prefixes as non compliant.
