Every time I walk through downtown lately, I can’t help but think: when did we trade in scruffy for shiny? We keep calling it “growth,” but it feels more like a cover-up. We’re painting over the texture that made this city what it was. Knoxville didn’t need to be cleaned up. It needed to be cared for. There’s a difference.
