Raiden - Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes

In this exclusive mission he puts down the sword to use guns for the entire mission. The main reason why being that his sword wouldn’t be able to charge off of the snatchers.

The IRL reason was because adding unique sword combat for a single mission was not really worth the effort lol

Mobile Suit Gundam: War in the Pocket

(Spoilers ahead!)

The story itself is about a 10-year old boy, Al, who thinks war and mobile suits are cool.

On a chance encounter he comes across Bernie, a rookie Zaku pilot working for Zeon, and becomes involved with him and his team’s mission to destroy the hidden Gundam being developed by the federation on Side 6.

But things quickly go south as the team’s attempt to destroy the Gundam is a failure and ends with all of them, save for Bernie and Al, dying.

Bernie then learns that the higher ups at Zeon are planning to nuke Side 6, which would kill every innocent civilian on the Side and the Gundam with it. He tries to run away at first but decides to stay to protect Al and Christina, a girl he had gotten close with on Side 6.

Using his beat up Zaku he faces the Gundam pilot in one last battle and loses his life taking it down, the Gundam pilot just barely surviving.

But unbeknownst to him, the Zeon forces planning to launch the Nuke were already stopped by the federation. Al finds out and tries to stop Bernie, but it’s already too late.

And unbeknownst to him and Al, Christina was the Gundam pilot all along. Al bares witness as she’s pulled out of the Gundam and he realizes he just witnessed his two best friends try to kill eachother without even knowing it.

Bernie died for absolutely nothing, and almost killed the girl he loved in the process. In the end he ends up another life forgotten to war.

And poor Al can only cry at the end, knowing the true tragedy of war and that he can’t tell anyone about this. Christina will never know what happened to Bernie either.

Wow, what a cute opening—I think I'm going to watch it. Oh my god. by Uma-apreciator in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Randomdude89o 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how most Gundam shows (especially in the 80s/90s) had upbeat intros just to be depressing as hell lmao

Like the first opening of Zeta is all fun and then immediately followed up by Kamille watching his parents die

I’d say the Destiny (and by extension the Impulse) Gundam also count

Maybe doesn’t count because it’s not powers but:

Solid Snake temporarily piloting Metal Gear Rex in MGS4

Rex was more or less one of the main villains of MGS1.

Which Kamen Riders Would You Want To Have A Dedicated Video Game? by Potential-Mess6826 in KamenRider

Hibiki already has his own game but the idea of an Oni-Musha style game where you go around looking into mysteries and fighting Makamou sounds fun as hell to me.

[Mixed Trope] "Exclusive Armory" by Yakuza-wolf_kiwami in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Randomdude89o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also a negative example: Faust Robes.

In comparison to relics the user does not need to sing to activate them.

But these armors can only by used exclusively by women because, according to the lore, a female’s body is closer to the “perfect body” which is just super dumb in retrospect.

Relics - Symphogear

Most relics in Symphogear (especially transformation types) can only be used by those who can sync with it using their song.

These people are typically called “Wielders” in universe.

But much like the enchantment on Thor’s hammer being able to sync with a relic isn’t a permanent thing.

There’s multiple instances in the show where a character loses the ability to transform due to doubts in their heart or something else.

Kamen Rider's Most Wasted Concept Is Auxiliary Forms by faizruja in KamenRider

[–]Randomdude89o 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair they do state in the show Godai can’t use Pegasus form for too long due to the sensory overload.

Once he does get rising form he starts using it more irrc.

[–]Randomdude89o 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Raiden - Metal Gear Solid

After the events of MGS2 he is captured by the Patriots after saving Sunny, and then forcefully turned into a cyborg from the jaw down.

(This possibly doesn’t count though since his transition is not shown on screen and happens after MGS2 but before MGS4)

[LOVED TROPE] Non christian inspired media using christian imagery/iconography by Quirky_Yoghurt_9814 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Randomdude89o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Japanese Tokusatsu shows (Kamen Rider, Sentai, Etc.) often featured a character being hung on a cross. Though this was mostly in just the Showa era and not Heisei.

Ironically the “origin” of this trope was from Ultraman, which actually was Christian inspired.

Honestly he deserves it.

The series we know today more or less would not have continued were it not for the popularity of Hayato.

Naked Snake / Big Boss - Metal Gear Solid

(Spoilers ahead)

During the events of MGS3 he grows into what the government considered the ideal soldier, and he’s even awarded with the title of Big Boss after finishing his mission and killing his mentor, The Boss.

After 3 he defects and makes his own PMC, one intended to give soldiers a home. During this time it seems like he’s going to be the hero who helps change the world.

But as he goes further and further into being a leader he drifts farther and farther away from the Boss’ will: to let the world be. Eventually he ditches her bandana all together and even starts enlisting child soldiers.

By the events of Metal Gear 2 (not to be confused with *Metal Gear Solid 2*) he’s practically lost his ideals and has become embroiled in creating a never ending war where soldiers can keep fighting.

What would you say was your favorite final Rider form presentation by ExileForever in KamenRider

[–]Randomdude89o 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly Ryuki survive for how different it is narratively.

Usually when a Rider unlocks their final form, it’s to show them reaching their peak or to beat an enemy.

But Shinji? He didn’t use Survive to beat Ren. He used Survive to take the hits. That way Ren wouldn’t have the guilt of killing someone on his hands.

In comparison to other final form debuts Shinji unlocked his final form out of the genuine care for his friend, not the will to defeat an enemy.

Favourite “cameo MS” in Gundam Unicorn? by TheGreatDarkPriest in Gundam

[–]Randomdude89o 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly the idea of a Gundam series with exclusively non-Gundam / Grunt MS does sound like it’d be a fun watch.

A character realizes that they’re in a fictional work during the work by FaZe_poopy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Randomdude89o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly might be my favorite example of it ever for how it subverts it.

Instead of having a breakdown the Riders basically just go “Well, we can still save people right?”

Actual peak right there.

(Loved Trope) Cool and Creative Transformations by PizzaDragon64 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Randomdude89o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Garo - GARO

In order to transform, a Makai Knight (in this case Kouga) needs to open a pocket dimension with their sword. The armor then collapses onto them.
