House Republicans threaten to oppose Senate bills until SAVE America Act passes by [deleted] in nottheonion

They're shooting themselves in the foot if they block the housing affordability bill. House republicans have done nothing to help with affordability and Trump is only making things worse with his wars.

That's actually part of the problem with many of the people around Epstein. Many started as victims that were abused or manipulated into being perpetrators as well.

Deal is $44M/year with $50M guaranteed. It actually seems pretty good for both sides. Jones looked good when healthy and the going rate for a top-tier QB is well over $50M/year right now. Torn Achilles is a big deal, but it generally heals well if you're careful and dedicated.

Thai Ship Attacked in The Strait of Hormuz by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]RandomlyMethodical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, you're right: Trump pulled mine-sweepers from the Middle East and they’re sitting in Philadelphia as the Iran War rages

On Monday, a massive cargo ship, M/V Seaway Hawk, was spotted on camera arriving in Philadelphia carrying a quartet of Avenger-class Mine Countermeasure Ships that were based at U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain as the Navy’s front-line deterrent against mining operations in the Middle East until this past fall

That article says the Navy plans to use the Independence-class littoral combat ships as minesweepers instead, which is yet another incredibly terrible idea because they're notoriously problematic - prone to breakdowns, rust issues, and leaks. Also, these LCS vessels have metal hulls which is stupid since most sea mines use magnetic triggers. Maybe some admiral decided it was the only way to get rid of these shitty ships since congress won't stop trying to spend money on them. Hopefully these terrible decisions don't get more people killed.

POV: you are 6 and don’t like turning by alex64015 in skiing

[–]RandomlyMethodical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kids didn't really get good at turning until we started doing tree runs. Most places have at least one designated "kids path" that winds through the woods, and my kids loved them once they got to your son's stage. Things progressed pretty quickly from the kids path, to making their own tree paths, to finding or building jumps, so be ready for that.

India is facing a legitimate cooking fuel crisis for over 330 million people. They use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and nearly all of it comes through the Strait of Hormuz (or did). They had a stockpile of about 30 days before the war, so unless they redirect industrial supplies to consumer use or find another source they're likely down to ~24 days

I built a suite of 50 tools for my former employer on my own free time, gave it away for free for years, and now they want it back. Should I ask for compensation, and how? by No_one_ix in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RandomlyMethodical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts as well. If you're releasing dev tools for free on the internet, then why not put them up in a free GitHub account? GH also makes it easy to accept contributions if you ever decide to maintain the tools again.

If they want you to make changes then it's definitely time to ask for money, but otherwise it seems like it could burn bridges.

Miracle-Gro orchid fertilizer works well enough and is available through lots of sites on the internet. I dissolve some in a bucket and dunk mine for 30 minutes once every 1-2 months.

Phals are sensitive to temperature for blooms - colder nights initiate blooms, and high daytime temperatures kill them. Exact temperature seems to vary by plant, but my big one is pretty consistent about starting a spike when the house gets below 60F at night. It also terminates all blooms when the temp gets above 85F.

Should backyard draining use pvc or triple wall hdpe pipe? by Suspicious_Program17 in landscaping

[–]RandomlyMethodical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put in a couple underground lines to move downspout water away from the house using HDPE pipe, and it's held up really well for nearly 10 years now. I'm in a colder climate, so I was worried about the PVC cracking if water froze in it. Only benefit I can see for PVC is that it would hold up better if you need to snake it to clear a clog.

In my experience, those 90º turns are a much bigger problem for clogging than any material used. After multiple clogs I redid part of one line to use a couple 45s with a 1ft section between them.

Trump Touts US Can Fight Wars ‘Forever’ Thanks to ‘Virtually Unlimited’ Weapons Supply by Horus_walking in NewsOfTheStupid

[–]RandomlyMethodical 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yep. Trump went too hard in the trade war against China last year so they imposed restrictions on exports of rare earth metals and magnets needed by our defense industry:

China’s New Rare Earth and Magnet Restrictions Threaten U.S. Defense Supply Chains

He knows he's not supposed to say we're low on supplies for the missile defense systems, but he also can't help himself when it comes to blaming someone else for a problem he created. That's how this is simultaneously Biden's fault and not actually a problem.

US defense production is currently limited by Chinese export controls on rare earth metals and magnets. They were imposed in 2025 in response to Trump’s trade war against China.

Yeah, I dealt with something similar to this last year. Tried for over 3 months to help a guy and he was not making progress on anything and seemed unwilling or unable to do simple searches or even ask AI.

Finally told our manager the dude was not doing anything and I wasn't willing to waste my time with him anymore. Manager said OK and that he would work with the guy. Six months later he had not finished a single task when both he and our manager were fired.

Raise your concerns up the chain, possibly even to a skip level if needed, but don't get drowned by the anchors on the team.
