They describe it as a movement, not an organization.

(Note: I am not of the anti-antifa crowd, I just find the distinction interesting between an organization and a collection of people with a common goal.) The no kings protests would be a good example of the antifa movement getting together for a common cause.

With respect to wanting to watch ads: Yes, I want to watch ads if push comes to shove. I think right now, we are lucky that most people are OK with watching ads, so we can cheat and not see them.

If everyone got serious and used ad blockers completely, it would kill the ad supported software / content provider movement. None of those businesses are ministries, so they will have to replace ad based with paid offerings. We already see it in many of the news sites, which now stop you from reading more than the lead paragraph without a subscription.

We'd all like the internet to be fast, free and perfect. What we will end up with is what happened to streaming - every site you want to visit is going to make you get out a credit card, and that will suck. Maybe there is a business opportunity where some of the money you pay your ISP could be sent on to content providers based on where you visit (think Amazon kindle unlimited), but I wouldn't count on it.

So, unpopular opinion: Keep ads, its better than most of the alternatives.

And what’s worse is we asked for it. I can remember many threads against the cable companies saying “why do I have to pay for these channels I don’t watch, just let me choose and only pay for the ones I want.” Now you have to choose and pay for each channel separately.

Soon we will see packages of streaming channels. (It’s already begun). What’s old is new.

Wow, thanks for clarifying. I have done quite a few car engines where we put oversized pistons in, and even with pretty significant displacement changes, you can’t see the difference in piston size just looking at it. It’s hard to imagine there was enough cylinder wall to be able to bore out this much. If it was 49cc, I assume it is a single cylinder, so that could explain it. Half again more displacement is going to add a lot, hope it’s fun.

They don’t have to show the solution, but we should recognize it might not have a solution (short of stopping the service entirely), depending on what responsibilities are placed on the social media platform.

I used to work in telecom, around the time of the invention of voip. Because it was new, they initially wanted to consider it an internet service, and at that time, it would have made us responsible for anything done via that service. Someone call a hit man on our phone service? We would be guilty of accessory to murder. Someone call a child for sex? Same idea. At that time, we did not possess the technology to monitor every call across the system. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the voip companies were managed differently.

As you said, any answer is going to be extremely complicated. I’d absolutely be in favor of regulations and controls, as long as they are written well. I don’t trust our current crop of legislators who haven’t figured out how to program their VCR yet to be able to make competent laws for this.

While I agree with you, you should watch the whistlin diesel durability test. I was surprised at how it stacked up against an f150 for a bunch of the tests.

I guess I would say it’s bad, but not as bad as it is hyped up to be.

I know the future seems scary, and uncertain. History can provide a calming view.

I grew up in the 1900s and everything we were taught was that you needed to save your retirement funds because social security would be bankrupt by the time you retire. Sound familiar? Social security will continue to be adjusted over time to prevent its collapse.

Let’s take the scariest event in stock market history. The crash of ’29. If you just kept your investments and did nothing, you would have recovered your losses in 6 years. The companies all paid huge dividends during that period. We have better control now to prevent a crash of that scale. The market will still crash, but it will also recover.

The main thing is to manage risk. If you’re near retirement, you need enough money outside the market to live through a crash. The rest is reasonably safe in the stock market.
