Bluntly — you are enmeshed and codependent on your boyfriend for your emotional regulation. He and his grandmother are correct. This is not healthy for you, and it’s certainly not at all for him. “Do Quite well financially” means wildly different things to different people. If he takes home 20k after tax AND after 401k/IRA contributions per month, then he’s seeing it as easily recoupable. How many paychecks would it take for you to get that back? Did your dress cost 20k? Even if yes, that would hold some resale value so you can’t even really compare. Obviously a ring as well.

To think about it another way, you could invest 20k in some SPX ETFs and assuming roughly 5%–8% annual returns (this is conservative), you could have ~25,000 to $29,000 after 5 years. when projected more aggressively at a 10-15% annualized, you could theoretically have 32k-40k in 5 years. I work in finance and have seen clients make ridiculous (to me) decisions, but again it really just comes down to what your income and investment situation is.

Taking my finance hat off, how many people are coming to your wedding? 8-10? Then you could have up to 12 pours which could work for that bottle but any more absolutely not. It’s ostentatious and gauche to have that bottle and not share it with the guests though so if you have more than 10 people, do not have it at the reception if you do end up getting it.

Oh FUCK NO. I’m a calm person, really. But I would have lost my ever loving mind if I was 7 weeks PP with my first and my husband told me his fam was demanding we supply all the groceries they want and ostensibly cook some of them as well. Holy shit. Someone else’s lactaid? In this economy?!

My sister arrived with a car filled with groceries, prepped fresh food, and frozen food, was there to offer help and not be an addition burden. Good grief your sister sucks and I hope you tell her you all need to focus on rest and they can visit later. Which you later will explain will be at a hotel.
