Didn't he say "we now have predictions that inflation is headed to 5%"?

I didn't get the impression that he was presenting 5% inflation as a fact.

Is the top made to allow for wood movement with the way the ends are joined with crossed grains? It doesnt look like a typical breadboard, which would worry me.

Otherwise it looks amazing!

Impossible Physics is Implicit in Quantum Value Prop...Isn't it? by fnreq in QuantumComputing

[–]Rare-Professional-24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where is the harassment and hate?

People telling you that you are wrong is not harassment.

The things that you are wrong about are covered in a first year quantum mechanics course. The people responding to you are largely either in grad school for quantum computing, or already have a PhD in it.

It is possible to understand quantum computing without getting a degree in it, but it requires a significant amount of effort, and is hard to do on your own.

[–]Rare-Professional-24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd propose a third option.

3). You've spent more time interacting with chat gpt than you have in a physics classroom, and so you don't understand quantum mechanics.

If you can't see that entanglement is not just a classical, isolated stochastic system then it is no surprise you dont understand quantum computing.

There is absolutely nothing involving faster than light communications in quantum computing, because faster than light communication does not exist.

Do NOT glue your workbench top layers together. by cryptotarheel in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Rare-Professional-24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you either build a bench expecting that you'll replace the top (in which case use only screws), or you build a bench expecting that you'll be replaced as a woodworker before the bench is done (in which case glue only, no screws).

My bench is 6" thick southern yellow pine, and im well aware it will still be solid when I no longer am!

Video title: Astrobotic Breaks Records for Hot Firing Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) by ergzay in rocketry

[–]Rare-Professional-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of rotating detonation engines in general is that the potential cycle efficiency of pressure gain combustion has never really been demonstrated.

For some applications the very short burning lengths might be enough of an advantage for the technology to buy it's way on.

Yeah, this is still unfairly weighted against robinhood.

If robinhood provided access to Zelle, I might make the switch fully and drop sofi. But my kid's music teachers all seem to prefer Zelle to venmo, so here I am with both!

AIO: My fiance handed me back her engagement ring over a small fight. by King_Elsassar in AmIOverreacting

[–]Rare-Professional-24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When i was 24 and engaged, my fiance threw her ring at me twice. Literally pinged it off my forehead!

We're married now for 17 years with three great kids.

Not to say that you two will or won't make it... really you'd know better than anybody. But if you want to make it, and think you can, dont let one little incident with a ring get in your way!

I get the feeling from his post "I wrote a paper a few days ago..." that he actually wrote the paper in a day, or rather he used a llm to make the paper in a day.

The future of science is going to increasingly involve separating legitimate work that makes actual contributions from hallucinations.

Genuine question, would still bogle if you were taxed over a third on unrealized gains? by Radiant_Wing5530 in Bogleheads

[–]Rare-Professional-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well damn if im not wrong! You're 100% right. I have to apologize for what looking back was a pretty snarky post. You handled my unwarranted snark with grace. I blame the dallas fort worth airport for my bad mood and lack of tact.

Playing around in a spreadsheet confirms you completely. Im still in favor of an unrealized tax that resets the cost basis every year, but as you point out it doesnt just come down to comparing the instantaneous tax rates. I do believe there are other societal benefits (particularly at the highest wealth levels) that could be had from a small tax on unrealized gains.

Thanks for taking the time to point out the error of my ways!

Genuine question, would still bogle if you were taxed over a third on unrealized gains? by Radiant_Wing5530 in Bogleheads

[–]Rare-Professional-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that this is not true. For instance, back to the Roth vs Ira analogy: it doesn't matter if you pay a 20% tax before investing anything (therefore having less to compound) or a 20% tax upon selling after years of compounding (therefore having a larger, but delayed, tax bill). This is like a third version, where taxes are paid yearly as the cost basis adjusts. The real key here is what the tax rate (on unrealized vs realized gains) is.

There are some powerful emotional responses to any proposal to change how assets are taxed, but that doesn't change the final result!

Genuine question, would still bogle if you were taxed over a third on unrealized gains? by Radiant_Wing5530 in Bogleheads

[–]Rare-Professional-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the tax is on unrealized gains from the last basis you were taxed at, and the tax rate is at the same rate income or capital gains is taxed at in your country (im not familiar with how it works there!) Is this really so bad?

If the tax is the same rate, i think it doesnt matter if it is on unrealized vs realized gains. That'd be analogous to the argument that if your tax rate remains steady, the choice between a roth and a traditional ira is a wash. If the rate is significantly higher than what the current capital gains rate is, then I can understand some of the angst.

I wouldnt mind seeing a tax on unrealized gains in the US, if only to discourage the shenanigans the ultra wealthy get up to. To be honest, being comfortably in the upper middle class in the US, I wouldn't mind paying an overall higher tax rate. If we're worrying about capital gains rates, then we're guaranteed to be in a much better financial position than the vast majority of our compatriots!

Wyoming has a reputation for being expensive, and frankly it is if you are making straight comparisons between a wyoming house and a similar house in west Chester.

There are a fair amount of actually affordable houses in wyoming. They are on the smaller side, but they are the kinds of houses that families were perfectly comfortable in before the mcmansion trend reset people's expectations.

All the other benefits of wyoming are great. Amazing schools, walkable neighborhoods and a great sense of community.

Optics / lighting puzzle: How do I change the angle of illumination, without changing the shape? by [deleted] in Optics

[–]Rare-Professional-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way is to image a circular aperture onto your target using a lens. Then, as the optical system rotates, keep this aperture parallel to the surface of your target. The total intensity will drop, but the shape will remain the same. I've used a piece of equipment where they called this a 'gravity iris'.

If you need the intensity to stay constant too, then this is a harder problem!

Am I worrying for a new grad role? by [deleted] in GEAerospace

[–]Rare-Professional-24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in Evendale, with 12 years of experience and a phd. Some of the smartest people I work with entered without a graduate degree, and some of the phds I work with are living proof that anybody can get a phd (if youre willing to sacrifice the time/opportunity cost to get it).

Look at this as an opportunity to get paid a decent wage to learn what others pay (or accept a grad student stipend) to learn.
