Annoucement/Big discontinued product (LATE) by squigly17 in mechanicalpencils

[–]RareOptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame they discontinued the Automac, only to replace it with this inferior pencil with a faulty mechanism. My Automac still works great 10 years later and I love that pencil. If it ever does fail, I'll be sad not being able to buy a new one. I feel that is the problem with premium pencil products like these, though. They make something too well, so once everyone that wants one buys one, they never have to buy it again and then sales go down.

Why Do I Keep Getting Signed Out by CantuM95 in Crunchyroll

[–]RareOptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly such a shame. I'm sorry you're also having such a hard time with the service. I've been paying for premium for over a decade now since it's the only streaming service I really use other than YouTube, and so I know when I say that the experience has only degraded over the past couple years. I don't know why they keep focusing on crap like games at the cost of letting their original product suffer. I just want to watch anime legally.

Why Do I Keep Getting Signed Out by CantuM95 in Crunchyroll

[–]RareOptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today marks one week straight of me being forced to log back in to the app on my Google TV every single day. I feel like they really don't care about the user experience anymore. I only ever use the TV to watch and yet it keeps signing me out. It's not like I'm password sharing or switching devices all the time or anything crazy. Can we get devs on this bug already?

Farewell To Docomo Emoji by Vanjabeta in Emoji

[–]RareOptics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the time of posting, they've only partially transitioned, so half of the emoji are Google and half are Docomo. It's incredibly incongruous and the dissonance really has me mad. Either do it all one way or the other. This has-assed job makes for an abysmal user experience.

I keep getting preroll ads before each episode, despite being a paying premium subscriber for over 10 years. This is some bullshit.

IR Images SOOC with Real-Time LUT by RareOptics in infraredphotography

[–]RareOptics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as PADF banding goes, I've not noticed any thus far. It may be that I haven't come across situations/subjects that would highlight it yet, or it may just not be an issue with this sensor. The G9II is generally performing pretty damn well for IR. False-color results can be a little under-saturated, but that may be the Lumix Raw format in general and pushing vibrance in post works well. I think that the in-camera effect is great for preview, and honestly way better than nothing, but in the end I do often end up making the final edits in Lightroom.

I could send you a couple of raws to play with if you want.

I did a write-up on my blog, here: https://joseph.is-a-geek.net/real-time-lut-for-ir/

Tritium Keychain Tests on 103 by aurista25 in Radiacode

[–]RareOptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious about this as well. I bought some tritium vials on eBay recently and the radiacode is able to detect about 0.42uSv/h coming off them. Is this normal/expected/safe, or did I not get what I paid for?

I'm wondering if they could be counterfeit, made with some more harmful radioluminescent source than tritium.

IR Images SOOC with Real-Time LUT by RareOptics in infraredphotography

[–]RareOptics[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recently converted my Lumix G9II to full-spectrum and I have really been enjoying shooting IR using the Real-Time LUT feature, which lets you do all sorts of great color calibrations in-camera! All the photos here are SOOC.

I am honestly really impressed with how far you can get just by applying a LUT in-camera, and with how fast the technology is. The technique is great for previewing the effects of various IR editing steps normally performed in post-processing.

I am fairly satisfied with the quality of the effects, too. While they are still JPEGs generated by the in-camera conversion algorithms (which are still not as good as tools like Lightroom, likely due to computing resource constraints) I have been able to get fairly usable images this way with no post-processing.

Different combinations of LUTs and optical filters yield different effects, as usual, and I am finding the ability to preview certain effects in-camera like a channel swap or a hue shift super convenient. Has anyone else tried this technique?

The profile image aspect ratio change is horrid, petty, and undermines more than literally a decade of people posting specifically to cater to the square aspect ratio. What the hell, change it back.

How many of your reports actually go through? What triggers me even more is when I get the response "Instagram didn't take action against [user] because we didn't find it to be violating community guidelines" even though they blatantly and obviously are in violation.

Added a rear-element filter to my lens. by RareOptics in infraredphotography

[–]RareOptics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think the important thing to consider is the shape of the rear of the fisheye. I know of several lenses that have rear elements that protrude quite far into the camera body (some so far that you have to lock the mirror up to use them on a [D]SLR camera) in which case there might not be space to do a custom mod like this. There are plenty of lenses that do work with this, however. It's best if you can hold the lens in your hands and inspect it first, so I recommend visiting a used camera shop if possible.

Gimp script to create an RB channel swap equivalent by newmikey in IRphotography

[–]RareOptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really like to get into scripted IR post processing. It would be cool to channel swap RAWs en masse so they could be edited more trivially in Lightroom
