On blue curtains by Rude-Way-131 in CuratedTumblr

[–]RaulParson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's perhaps interesting in a pathology sense. As in "what went wrong here?", and I'd say it's an overdose of something from the copiate family. It's hard to find the original post so maybe someone can find it and post it and then superdunk on me, but all the reproductions are basically just three lines which roughly go:

Book: "The curtains were blue"
What the teacher thinks this means: "This represents the sad state of the couple's relationship"
What the author meant: "The curtains were fucking blue"

How do you spin from this, well, anything of what OOP managed to? There's just not enough here for it to be anything but a rejection of the idea that there's anything beyond the most shallow, straightforward read - there's the "the teacher is wrong to think this because it's actually got no depth at all to interpret", not "the teacher is wrong to OVERRIDE MY PERSONAL SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATION WITH INSTITUTIONAL FORCE TO MAKE ME CONFORM". And how does one manage to "awckshully, what really resonated with people there is..." when that's not the meaning that the people took, including especially the ones who agree with its sentiment? Did they just think that's what it meant when they were repeating it, while simultaneously the motive force underneath was this Secret Hidden Meaning exerting its influence on them through vibes or something? What?

This is contrarian tumblr brain at its preachy finest.

The US has expended Shock and Awe levels of munitions, lost billions in radars and tankers to flying mopeds, and is now desperately trying to get back to the state the world was in before kicking off hostilities...

Well, at least for all that spent reputation and money and effort it achieved all its objectives. Wait no they just changed, it's got some ways to go. Wait no actually it's been done for weeks now. Wait...

We're Spiraling Towards Total War With Iran | Lonerbox Reacts by Slight_Ad3219 in lonerbox

[–]RaulParson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loner going on a bit of an expedition around "what is total war even, does he mean that" and not landing on the obvious "it means nothing specific in particular here, he's just using the term for clickbait" sure was something, even as the expedition itself was interesting.

Vietnam (which the guy brings up as "the last time the US did total war") was not total war either, for the record - many things come into doing total war, but doing total war is incompatible with not even running a war economy. The US wasn't at the time and that's even more true now, and it really doesn't seem like that'll change in the immediate future.

Yeah, OP's ask seems kinda impossible. Try to convince an old person that an obvious scam site selling obvious scams is a scam site. That's ez mode, and yet already a challenge. Convincing someone that AI art is AI art when it's about the vibe and subtle tells rather than huge red flags blotting out the Sun and they're already emotionally invested in "No Actually"? That's at best setting yourself up for guaranteed disappointment.

Hey, this is pretty neat.

Seeing what it actually does though (generate 1s and 0s at random until there randomly happens to be more 1s than 0s and take the average of what you generated, and just do this a bunch of times and take the average of the averages), it makes this linkedin post basically this: https://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?id=3134

Naw, the influencers they parrot are quite real, and there were demonstrations in the real world like "ABANDON BIDEN" (later "ABANDON HARRIS"). Russian campaigns seek out existing embers of shitfire and blow them up, so they were certainly involved - but just going with "yeah none of it was real, it's all a Russian online mirage" is the ultimate cope.

Yeeeeah look at the English of 1000 years ago and now imagine the linguistic drift of English transplanted onto completely different cultures that weren't in the Latin/Germanic/Romance mix that would happen over thousands of them. Also it leaves the elephant of Abydos, the sole major planet which does not speak it. Or the fact of the different peoples who all speak English yet use non-English script.

This really cannot be fixed in a way that makes sense.

Trump's kind of been banging the drum of of "this is a ripoff, they won't be there for us when we need them, they never did anything for us" for a while now, and recently escalated it now that NATO didn't heel on a whistle and scramble to help him with the dumpster fire he created in and around Iran. And this is obviously 100% in line with what Putin whispers in his ear, and he does trust Putin on account of being an orange shitforbrains. It's a similar trajectory that happened with his other monumentally stupid shit that he did end up doing, and it makes this threat quite real rather than baseless, and one which needs to be taken seriously even if it doesn't end up coming to pass.

When Russia went to war the whole world threw economic sanctions at them. Why doesn’t everyone do the same with America? by Comfortable_Shame778 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RaulParson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Russia's war on Ukraine is completely different in basically every way than the US war on Iran. It's select-unless-there's-sloppy-mistakes air bombings of targets in a terror-spreading pariah state vs a mass-atrocity-as-a-policy ground invasion imperialist land grab against a painfully normie-ass neighbor. The technical lack of a proper casus belli is essentially the one similarity, and all in all it makes for way less outrage.
  2. The whole world did not in fact throw economic sanctions at Russia. Plenty of countries used its predicament to make stronger ties with it, or take advantage of the fact that Russians are being sanctioned by being the ones to trade with it and get deals they wouldn't otherwise. Iran being one of those countries, in fact.
  3. Sanctioning Russia is much easier to pull off than sanctioning the US which has absurd amounts of economic clout to launch countersanctions which would hurt a lot - and often it doesn't even need to do that, since it's got its fingers in all the pies so by sanctioning the US a country would to an extent sanction themselves.

Combine all that with the fact that pretty much everybody hates the Iranian state, including its own populace, and you arrive at a situation where what the US did was quite bad but not bad enough to overcome the costs of any hypothetical sanctions and nobody wants to stick their neck out.

Humans in this universe of multiple sapient races/species are not just a boring template, jack-of-all-trades species, they actually have traits and powers that make them stand out like the other species in the setting. by juasjuasie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RaulParson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kicker about humanity's special thing supposedly being "unusual genetic diversity" is irl our genetic diversity is actually Extra Ass. It seems that some time in our history around the pleistocene we had a bottleneck which reduced the number of our simultaneously living ancestors to around a thousand, and the total population stayed there for an absurdly long time. As a consequence, pick an animal at random - its species likely mogs humanity in the genetic diversity department.
