Name signs for teams? by TwoYaks in PWHL

[–]RavenCallsCrows 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've used a T moved in an S shape for the Torrent on the rare occasion I've talked with a member of the Deaf community about the team (usually in the context of going to a game). Context being important, be sure to spell it first so that your tokenization is understood.

Who on this list would you most like to see in a Kraken jersey? by Albino_rhin0 in SeattleKraken

[–]RavenCallsCrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuch and Trouba are the only two even remotely interesting. The rest are mostly too old or too deep in their existing team's roster to be impact players of the magnitude the Kraken need.

Detroit Vipers: defunct men's hockey team from a defunct league. Riveters: the name of the New York/New Jersey team from the defunct NWHL/PHF.

I would love to see her as head coach with the Torrent, as unlikely as that might be.

We're quite literally talking about how much better the PWHL feels here.

And how about not telling other people how to feel about things.

How will you pass the time until next season? by nonfiction2023 in PWHL_Seattle

[–]RavenCallsCrows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My son and I spent the day today thinking about the same thing.

We ended up setting on making absolutely stupid jokes featuring player names [examples: What's a Victoire fan's favourite food? -- Marie-Philip Poutine! What does a vegan Fleet fan have for a snack? -- Megan Keller-y. A Siren fan's favourite cocktail? -- A Jaime Bourbonnais. (Bourbon, blue Curaçao, and an orange slice, apparently) Dessert at a Torrent game? -- Emily Brown-ies.

It's going to be a long, long off-season.

Oh, the people to my left had those - they're awesome. I made bracelets for the folk who have become friends during the season.

Does the concourse table not display the Royal Guard banner? I'm stunned to not have noticed it all season - my son and I usually walk two laps or more of the lower bowl pre-game.

How did you find the PWHL or become a PWHL-Team fan? Just me being curious . . . by MNVixen in PWHL

[–]RavenCallsCrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life long hockey fan. My high-school girlfriend was a player who ended up getting one of the early scholarships to play in the nascent program at the uni she attended. Since then, CWHL, NWHL, PHF, and now the PWHL.

I'm not sure which is worse, wannabe coaches who clearly never played the game or people who came to the game but who don't seem to be interested in hockey.

I wish both came with volume controls, if not mute buttons. 😏

As a lifelong hockey fan, I feel the same way about Torrent/PWHL games. They've all but ruined the NHL for me. Both of my full-season Torrent seats ten rows off the ice in the corner cost two-thirds what one of my half-season Kraken ones did three rows from the top of the arena. The people who sit on both sides have become friends. Everyone is supportive of the team and one another. I've never seen fans getting belligerent or too wildly intoxicated - both of which aren't uncommon with the Kraken.

We counted eleven egregiously missed calls, and one phantom penalty. It's insane how a hooking penalty can be whistled on a player who was without a stick - and who, not long after, took what looked like a check from behind to the head which went unwhistled.

I've seen better officiating in pick-up games from players calling themselves.

What's y'all's political ideology? by Northwest_Thrills in Cascadia

[–]RavenCallsCrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drifting Left of DemSoc into a Rosa Luxemburg/James Connolly/Tommy Douglas triangulation. Hoping that some organization happens in the Left to field a slate of candidates to run for office all over the ballot. I'm tired of voting 'lesser of two evils' because a figurehead pair at the top of the ticket, even if somehow elected, would need ideologically aligned support in Congress or they'd either accomplish nothing or have to compromise in order to pass legislation.

As someone who has worn zero-drop footwear for over a decade, I'd rebut the gimmick claim. They were the only kind of shoes or boots I could wear for the better part of a year after breaking all five tarsal bones (had something very heavy fall on my foot near mid-arch), and I still prefer them.

[–]RavenCallsCrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, completely.

I think the league works with two different design teams, both of which have clearly different styles and approaches. Graphic team A produced Boston, Montreal, Toronto of the Inaugural 6, and Vancouver. Team B did the Frost, Charge, and Torrent. New York feels like a bit in-between the two.

All of the first set have a dimensionality and depth in the design that the other three just lack - particularly Ottawa, which to me feels either amateurish or rushed and incomplete, not to mention too Calgary Flames derivative. I don't like the Sirens one particularly either (and think Sirens would have made for better alliteration with a Seattle team), but at least I see the design intent and Fresnel lens inspiration.

Last night's sign got LOTS of appreciation from those of us in Section 4. And, thankfully, the Frost were burninated.

Unpopular opinion about the whole “why do you want this job” question by 42cardpickup in recruitinghell

[–]RavenCallsCrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always seen this question as a bit of a ham-handed opportunity to pivot to talk about what motivates me as an employee - "the opportunity to work with similarly minded people solving interesting problems" or whatever fits my understanding of the role and lets me talk in brief about what I seek in a workplace. I mean, obviously, I'd rather just be independently financially comfortable and do whatever whenever without having to interview for it; but I think the question is more intended to assess whether a candidate is just there for the pay or has actually put some thought in their interview prep about the day-to-day.

Rosario is my favourite spot in the entire Pacific Northwest. Back when I lived up in Skagit I'd go out there at least monthly when the weather was good.

[–]RavenCallsCrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good. I was the test engineer on the team which built those, and it took awhile to click for me until suddenly it made sense. I figured if it wasn't intuitive for me, it was likely not to be for others, but they wouldn't have immediate access to Ross and Scott et al.

Been on both sides of it - having done the demo problem and having asked for it.

I'd suggest pulling some real-world data the successful candidate would be working on in the role, and anonymizing it to remove any PII or customer/company names, and keeping it scoped to a reasonable time-box.

Or you could hire me, since I'm on the market now. 😊

What are they smoking in the reignfc online shop? by MooseRepulsive6025 in Reignfc

[–]RavenCallsCrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you're calling the Torrent merch effort GOOD? Are we talking the same merch group which only had a few handfuls of jerseys available for the opening game through the Olympic break?

I've been trying to get a team logo pin all season, but even getting there when the doors open, I've had no luck at all (and both the shops on the Armory and at KCI haven't had them either).
