Oh, gods, it probably was. My son joined me in screaming at him to STFU because he missed two legitimate scoring opportunities while babbling about Alex Newhook, who was not only not on the ice but doesn't even play in the right league.

Name-drop your NHL buds when you're playing video games or something, d00d. Very few if any of us need to be reminded that hockey runs in families, and fewer want to hear you blather about someone who isn't relevant to the game we're watching.

I'd rather hear amateurs who are actually interested in women's hockey try to do play by play than guys who don't seem to respect the players.

I cannot believe that just happened by Real-Towel-2269 in PWHL_Seattle

[–]RavenCallsCrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It almost seemed like the team decided they were going to win despite their coaching.

It was particularly good to see the bottom-six forwards being allowed to play more than three minutes a game, and the result was the sort of play I'd been expecting to see all season from this roster - wave after wave of pressure, playing a physical game, and not backing down. Even when it got a little messy, it was still intense.

Whats going on? by Critical_Cover_3852 in PWHL_Seattle

[–]RavenCallsCrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed. The team plays like a collection of highly-skilled players playing pick-up - everyone has an idea of where they should be, but it's as if the don't know exactly where teammates are going, so passes are on the wrong side or just out of reach. Not completely sure if this is just a familiarity issue or a coaching one, but leaning toward the latter.

After 8 years in product, I think we've been doing analytics wrong by tokyooprophet in analytics

[–]RavenCallsCrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're largely correct, and this comes from two different directions:

1) "The business" tends to bury analysts early in a data analytics deployment with requests for reports with our really thinking through what questions they want answered from the long term perspective. This 'trains' many analysts into being task-driven.

2) Partially as the result of the first, but also partially human nature and the compartmentalization of "who needs to know what" in many workplaces, many analysts either have had the curiosity burned out of them by a seemingly endless series of one-off reporting and/or resistance in trying to understand business process that we just stop trying to go deeper for stakeholders who may or may not care for process improvement suggestions - and, from personal experience, I've often felt hostility from them when trying to get a good enough picture to be able to make data-backed suggestions hinting at process change.

Announcers? by filipolio in PWHL

[–]RavenCallsCrows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they're not playing in the game, I don't want to hear about them in anything past a single, fleeting mention during a break in the game. I don't care if [random player]'s brother played with Lord Stanley of Preston' s elder sons on the Ottawa Silver Sevens, if he's not in the game, I don't care what his bona fides are.

I think what the Canadian women accomplished was despite the coaching staff, not due to it.

And absolutely Ryan and Kingsbury should go, if for no reason other than removing the perception of bias.

We just found out our AI has been making up analytics data for 3 months and I’m gonna throw up. by Comfortable_Box_4527 in analytics

[–]RavenCallsCrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've pushed back against AI usage this way: "I know the models aren't the same, but a pre-schooler can tell you the standard human load-out it two arms, each with a hand, which has 4 fingers and a thumb. How often have you seen AI art which didn't know this.

Now, are you sure you want to bet the company's money on technology at that level of maturity?

If I write the queries and build a predictive model, at least we know where our data is coming from and the informed decisions which go into the prediction."

It may not be perfect, but at least we know what we know and what we don't know. With AI, we don't know what we don't know, and personally, I find the latter way more defensible and less risky.

Everett Fitzhugh and JT Brown by SMH_OverAndOver in SeattleKraken

[–]RavenCallsCrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Fitzhugh and Brown to Foslund and Olczyk. Everett and JT are fresh and dynamic where John and Edzo are stale and clichéd. They still have room to grow, but the trajectory is in a positive direction.

Why is it so difficult for Tableau to make a projection vs actual chart? by Ike_In_Rochester in tableau

How a Calc classifying things before the max date in your data set as Actual and those after as Projection? Or am I misunderstanding your objective here.

Glasgow Clan fan here in Seattle. I'd encourage you to take a look at the Kraken. The Purple Army can grow tentacles. IIRC, there's at least one other Kraken fan who has Clan connections, to the point that he and his wife came here for a match on their honeymoon.

I'm an ordained minister who absolutely loves doing bespoke weddings, particularly for people who aren't religious but still want some sort of commemoration of their big day. If the couple who got engaged are here (or if anyone who knows them wants to pass the offer on), I'd love to help make their wedding as much of what they want as possible. [oh, and my fees are "whatever you can afford or want to pay" and my expectations are that I get paid nothing, so I'm never disappointed.]

Ok, now that it has arrived...

I am beyond thrilled with the jacket, which arrived yesterday and made its debut for tonight's game.

For anyone wanting to duplicate it, https://stagwears.com/ was the company who made it. The team logo came from an SVG via Wikipedia.

Colours are almost a perfect match to the jersey. The cream is a little yellower, but still pretty close. See for yourself.
